> MCD uses location tracking to only submit the mobile order once you are in range of the store

Interesting. Can they be certain that the device from which one places the order, is also taken along for the ride? Some people might order from a separate phone or tablet, which stays at home. Perhaps all of this customer's devices have the McD's app; and any one of them may trigger the order, by approaching the store.

craig_s_bell··on The Insecurity of Debian
For some distributions, CIS benchmarks (also used by various other security tools) now include guidelines for SELinux.

I couldn't find it in the Debian spec (probably because it uses AppArmor), but the RHEL benchmark has these.

Currently, server level 1 only requires permissive mode:

CIS Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 v2.0.0 L1 Server — 1.3.1.4 Ensure the SELinux mode is not disabled
... While server level 2 specifies enforcing mode:

craig_s_bell··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
I gave up NPR a few years ago, after four decades of frequent listening. It has become more difficult to recognize the attributes which made it so useful and insightful, for so long. Once in a while, they run something which reinforces my opinion that they've strayed into the weeds. A recent example: https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1197955833

LUSE: I talked to other professors in preparation for this conversation, and something that came up was, like, it's seen by many as a very extreme form of nonviolent direct action.

WOODLY: Yes. I mean, it is the most extreme form of nonviolent direct action because self-immolation is not meant to hurt others. It's not meant to destroy property. It's really meant to use one's own life to make a statement. It's also on a spectrum - right? - like, you know, sort of on a spectrum from, for example, hunger strike. Some people do things like nail parts of their bodies to buildings. And then sort of self-immolation is, like, on that spectrum of the most extreme kinds of nonviolent direct action.

There were a total of three fatalities resulting from Asiana 214. Two passengers died onboard, as a direct consequence of the crash.

As for the third, it was later speculated that they could possibly have already died before encountering airport fire and rescue vehicles. This is still controversial; it is also possible that the original sequence of events was correct.

The primary cause of the crash was a profound lack of airmanship by the flight-deck crew. There was also some mode confusion with the autopilot and autothrottle; however they should have overcome this using fundamental aviation skills. Nobody was minding the actual throttle state.

Either way, it is worth noting the other two fatalities. Thank you.

craig_s_bell··on The iPhone 13 mini is dead
Some people (such as my Better Half) have small hands, and greatly prefer the Mini form-factor. She finds it annoying to use the larger models.

I hope that Apple hears from many such customers; and re-introduces a smaller, current-generation phone.

craig_s_bell··on How to Produce Green Hydrogen for $1/Kg
No need to worry; Hydrogen's exceptional permeability means the gas will diffuse through the jerry can, into the atmosphere; thus lowering its internal pressure.

We can make vessels which will contain increasingly high pressures; however their permeability is higher, vs. older materials. This is a central problem of hydrogen as a primary fuel... Better to burn it (or convert it into methane) where and when it is produced.

In that circumstance, I've heard that vitamins and supplements can be tricky; the additional nutrition may feed the cancer, before it feeds you. Just one more factor to consider.

Those guys tend to buy new; although you can easily find used (but still very capable) models on Fleabay, &c. for cheaper. Usual caveats apply; but I've had good experiences after checking sellers carefully.

Manufacturers also have factory-refurbished sales websites, usually separate from their normal website (lease-returns from their financial services arm). Those come with short warranties, and an option to extend them. They are also nicely cleaned up and re-boxed, sometimes with accessories.

I have one from Fleabay and another from Dellrefurbished. Both have been running great for nearly 3 years.

craig_s_bell··on One does not simply destroy a nuclear weapon
Good piece. IMHO the introductory narrative might be slightly enhanced by briefly pointing out that synthesis of plutonium was not achieved until several years after Szilard's brainstorm. Something like, "Researchers predicted that Pu would offer such-and-so advantages; however, nobody had quite yet come up with the recipe."

In other words: As described with the high-level bomb design, every material and component therein was concurrently being developed, improvised or straight-up invented to meet existing theory.

Thank you for recommending Rhodes' books; they are excellent. I may be alone in this; however I wish he had split 'Dark Sun' into two distinct volumes: One about the development of thermonuclear technology; and another for all of the spy stuff.

craig_s_bell··on Vangelis’ film score for Blade Runner
I'm particularly fond of the soundtrack editions which overlay Vangelis' music with city background noise, bits of dialog, and other atmospherics from the appropriate scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3fz6CC45ok

I don't know what this version is properly called; however I used to listen to a similar (but shorter, perhaps one hour long) version called the 'Esper Edition'.

Give it a listen, while you read the article... or anytime.
