cracoucax··on I wanna live an NPC life
None of this is a burdain if you don't let it

- cut the grass -> robot

- weed the flowerbeds -> once every week, or no flowerbeds if you feel it's not necessary

- wash the car -> idk I wash mine every 6 months or something. Go to the thingy, put coin, wait

- cook dinner -> or not. You could choose not to have dinner at all, or one of those fine premade gazpachos with a bit of bred and an egg

- do the dishes -> mostly putting things in a dishwasher and removing them every few days

The thing is, having a mind mostly empty of this kind of thing is its own reward. Maybe your car is less shiny, but your inner experience more so.

cracoucax··on My hobby of building miniatures and taking pretty pictures
Very nice. Seems you found yourself what I imagine to be a deeply relaxing hobby, which also offers new challenges all the time. Congrats !
cracoucax··on Why I left my tech job to work on chronic pain
I've always found strange all the talk about using cannabis to manage pain. I've smoked alot of weed, well before all those talks promoting THC for this.

It was my experience, and common knowledge in my circles at the time that THC made pain way, way worse, at least in resin form.

Probably simply because you'll tend to isolate things and focus on them very strongly when under the influence, it makes you notice pain more. I remember toking some days after a knee surgery and regretting badly having done it. So much pain I hadn't noticed...

cracoucax··on 1M Lazygit downloads, one embarrassment at a time
Just love lazygit, makes me happy every time I use it, which is every like every 5 minutes. Love how extensible it is with custom actions. Love the recent integration of update-refs. Thank you, happy new job and congrats !

cracoucax··on French artists in 1899 envisioned what life would look like in the year 2000
What it imagined is in fact a world where handled TVs would be a thing, based on a sci fi novel by Barjavel.

But yes those people all focused on their tv walking in the street /really/ look like current day smartphone users.

cracoucax··on YouTube addiction, one month sober
Oooh yes thanks for this, instant disable. History could be convenient at times, but hey not as much as my sanity.
cracoucax··on Zellij: A terminal workspace with batteries included
I've switched from tmux to zellij about 2 monthes, ago, it may have less features than tmux for now but it certainly does all i need, in most case better than tmux. It is much more user friendly and usable imo.

Frankly i've spent too much time in the past fiddling with complex confs and tools which expect the user to spent days figuring out a conf which work for them. Then if you don't use the tool for 1 month, or simply don't edit the conf for a big while you've forgotten half of it.

Zellij has a conf file, it took me a bit of time to tweak it at first, but i know I can understand it in a pinch. Same thing for actually using it, it's mostly discoverable.

And most importantly, it is very clear that simplicity and predictability are big priorities. It shows everywhere in the project, I totally vouch this approach and tend to do the same thing on my work projects. I know from experience than understanding your user's needs and getting out of your way to make their life easy by not having to think about how the implementation is done is really much harder that just making a tool configurable and extensible...

So, big kudos to you Zellij devs !

cracoucax··on John Carmack and John Romero reunited to talk DOOM on its 30th Anniversary
3d cards did not exit at the time, everything was done on the CPU.

And yes your pc had a graphic card, or you wouldn't have had anything to hook your screen onto ;)

cracoucax··on BBC Basic returns on multiple platforms, open sourced
Never used a BBC but 8bit computers of this era often used cassettes to load and save data.

The tape would contain bleeps and blurps which would be decoded into bytes by the computer. EG this is the sound produced by an Amstrad cpc464 loading a game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvChkOHgDIo

This meant that to copy software you didn't even need a computer, just a double cassette deck.

And that by recording the credits of this BBC show to tape and playing that back into the computer you'd load some program. That's actually a brilliant idea, I wonder what kind of software they broadcasted.

cracoucax··on Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness
Ah yes I understand
cracoucax··on Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness
Imo the belief in rebirth is not needed to practice metta, you just need to realize that every being wants to be happy, just like you.

Yet all of them are mired in delusion and most of the time do things which go the opposite way of generating real happiness, we all do.

Everyone is mired in delusion and most of the time react to feelings of anger and craving (vedana), which are generated based on their history, social norms and whatnot. They are just being manipulated by those all the time, unless they're very mindful of what's happening in their mind temporarily. Realizing this you can't really hate anybody, and in fact you realize they are 100% like you.

cracoucax··on The new science of meditation
I believe since Maharshi was a practitioner of hinduism for him "the self" (what they call Atman) was to be seen in all things, and the same everywhere.

So anything transient cannot be the self, hence is an illusion, or false.

But yes i also believe it's quite wrong ^^

cracoucax··on The new science of meditation
Psychotherapy works on the "self": your problems, your history.

One of the aims of mediation is to gradually understand that this self is really an illusion, hence there are in fact no problems and no history. Past does not really define who you are, and problems are only problems if you think reality should be different that what it currently is the moment you experience it (which is of course totally impossible. What you can do is alter the future though.)

Now don't get me wrong this self is in fact a very useful interface for interacting with others, etc. The problem is believing this interface, or layer we add on top on experiences really is us, while it's really just a useful concept to navigate the world.

We are all mostly a bunch of habits: this stimuli gives this response because we trained our mind to function this way, were raised that way, live within country X, etc. It's all just mind formatting. Meditation aims to discover this for yourself, which should leads you to train in developing new, more wholesome habits, which will make you and others suffer less. Then since you are mostly habits, you gradually change, and become much saner as times goes by. Saner because you're living more in adequation with reality.

So in a way, psychotherapy can be seen as a dead end for someone who practices meditation. Although it certainly has its uses, even for very advanced meditators who can also develop blind spots without seeing them (more work needed, but psychotherapy can be a useful mirror there).

cracoucax··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
Basically what he did what read about the "insight knownledges", (which are initially described in the Visuddhimagga, in a very loose way), and interpret them in whatever ways he sees fit, then proceed to see his, and everyone's life through the lens of that. He even diagnose everyone like an MD on his forums. (And incidentally, he /is/ a MD.)

You hear a dog bark and feel afraid ? Do you do meditation ? yes ? Surely you must be in a Bhaya ñana phase, and are on your way to enlightenment. Because bhaya = fear. Did you already experience that a few years ago ? did you go through this and that extremely loosely defined stages ? Then surely you are already a Sotāpanna and are headed to the attainment of once-returner.

Based on this he is an Arahant (because he says he cycled the insight knownledges 4 times).

But being an Arahat basically means being free of ill will, desire of the senses, and of a sense of self-existent self (and other things). It does not mean "just go though those phases, and that's it, that's his own reduction of the path to a few pages in the Visuddhimagga, which i would not even consider canonical personally.

> Are you basing this purely on reading about supposedly enlightened people getting angry or grumpy? That's a surprisingly common thing, actually.

People believing they are enlightened are common in some circles, yes, and it's always a red flag imo.

Yes, an Arhat does not get angry, that's in the very definition of the term: ill will has been totally eliminated. You cannot say you are an Arahat but you get angry, it would just mean you are something else than an Arhat, by definition.

cracoucax··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
Daniel Ingram is a deluded fool, and imo being this deluded probably means a sort of mental disorder. His book and system just show how far away from any real form of enlightenment he is. Sadly because he sounds modern & a little scientific people keep taking him seriously. No, the Vipassana nanas are not what he describes. Anyone wondering about him should just forget this stuff, burn this book and go to a retreat with a well known teacher.
cracoucax··on The Antidesktop (2002)
There are currently 2 usable OSx tiling window managers :

- KWM https://github.com/koekeishiya/kwm - Amethyst https://ianyh.com/amethyst/

I stopped using Linux on the desktop before tiling WMs were a thing, and was kinda fascinated by what i read about them, as i've always seen the overlapping windows GUI idea as somewhat broken. (what's the use of a window if it's even partially hidden, appart from clutter ??)

Well those 2 projets really bring tiling to osx, not just as in "resize windows with a shortcut" like spectacles, etc, but as the real i3/xmonad deal : windows are mostly managed for you, using a BSP for kwm.

I use kwm, it's beta quality, it has a few issues and i spent a few evenings tinkering to wrap my head about the concepts but ... it works, and it rocks !

Suddenly I can have 10 usable windows on my dual screen setup, focus follow mouse, etc. It feels so much peaceful having everything on your screen that being searching for windows all the time...

cracoucax··on Why are we all moving away from Apple?
simply that there is no real chrome for IOS, or firefox for that matter. They both are shells around webkit (i.e Safari).

Apple does not allow browsers in the app store if they don't use their own rendering engine.

cracoucax··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
This is a very bad move for Amazon on all levels, i'm pretty sure this will be cancelled and some heads will fly.

I mean :

- They piss their customers

- They piss their merchants, probably killing some businesses along the way

- They instill fear in their potential merchants. I was vaguely thinking about selling stuff on amazon mind you, and worried a bit about being locked in. Well, those fears are much more real now.

- They piss google and apple, obviously. They're competitors of course but it's a bit of a harsh move, in fact it looks like a war declaration.

- They have a very special place as the biggest merchant on the internet, people watch them and some fear for good reason what they could become (like the only e commerce platform on the internet), and what it could mean in term of market manipulation opportunities. Well they just gave those guys lots of cookies.

- They lose sales, obviously

All that for what ? Well that's ... not clear.

cracoucax··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
Except they're also a marketplace and they require their vendors to ban the same products.

It's not an ecommerce strategy, they're very clearly using their huge leverage as the #1 ecommerce on the internet to attack their competitors and lure customers into their walled garden.

I'm pretty sure in my country this will be forbidden by antitrust laws.

cracoucax··on When Schools Overlook Introverts
>> but personally it all feels really fake to me.

This.

I am an introvert, and this is the crux of the problem to me.

People have no problem whatsoever making smalltalk with persons they don't like, are happy to promote themselves on the web and whatnot as the best guy you can imagine, always feel entitled to give their opinions even if they have no idea about what is being talked about.

It's all a fake friends, fake interesting lives, fake enthusiasm and popularity contest.

If you don't participate in that shit or mention problems instead of being excited, you're singled out.

Errors are forgotten easily and leave no trace on the inflated ego because they don't have the balls to look at themselves critically.

But i'm the guy with issues, sure...

cracoucax··on 24-Bit vs. 16-Bit Audio Test – Part II: Results and Conclusions
I'd say it's actually the other way around : a /very/ good speaker will generally sound good with lots of punch even a very low volume. A low end one will need to be at 50% capacity or something to start to give its best. Obviously the amp & preamp also play a big part here.

cracoucax··on You can't dig upwards
It's not about wear, it's about security and controlling your car... When you're using your brakes you can't control your car nearly as well.

In case of emergency it makes a huge difference. You've got to control your brakes and turn the steering wheel. If you release your foot from the brakes the car will surge forward as it is not limited by the transmission.

Plus water, snow or ice downhill with brakes = danger, very easy to lose control of the car. Again if you're limited by the transmission it's a non- issue.

Plus it makes your brakes hot, which makes them less efficient in case of emergency (I think).

Your transmission should always be the limiting factor of your speed, period. That's it's job, to determine the speed of the car. The brakes are only here for when you couldn't downshift fast enough and you're going to hit something if you don't stop the car. That's what my instructor taught me, and repeated again and again.

When driving I sometimes see people braking all over the place, most of the time they also have strange trajectories, and are not easily predictable. I pass them as soon as I can.

And yes I use a stick, never used an automatic in my whole life in fact. I don't think it teaches you anything about the mechanics of the car as i know mostly nothing about that. But I'm pretty sure you "feel" the car much more. I'm nearly certain the aforementioned brakers are mostly automatic drivers (pretty rare in my country as most people despise automatics.)

cracoucax··on Nigerian Billionaire Commits $100M for African Entrepreneurs
I didn't read the comment you answer to, but people like you drive me nuts, seriously. Racist jokes can be perfectly funny, any joke can be perfectly funny it just depends who you tell it to, and at what humor degree you and the listener function.

I find some racist jokes funny because they're mostly a joke on racists on some level. On the other hand i find totally insulting that people dare believe that i'm actually racist if i happen to say a racist joke. In most cases it just means the listener is dumb enough that he doesn't try to analyze context and just wave his flag because he heard a bad word.

A joke is not a political commitment FFS, it's a fucking joke.

For your enjoyment at work in my unit we actually have a racist day every week where racist jokes fly all over the whole day, and most times make them with the targeted /(race|nation|skin color|whatever)/ present. It could go like that for example :

- someone : anybody saw my paperclip ? can't find it - someone else : Abdel probably took it, remember the guy is Arab, he steals all he can find. Seen your sister lately ? - a guy that happens to be jew : yeah Arabs are bad people, we've been telling you all along. - The Arab guy : Sorry i needed it for the seven virgin that are waiting for me guys.
