cpwright··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
>At that point you'd have to ask yourselves: who would risk nuclear escalation to retaliate for Latvia or Estonia? not the US.

That is the point behind asking for US soldiers to be permanently based. They are a sign of commitment. An "engagement ring" if you will. Without the US soldiers there it becomes much easier to ignore an attack.

cpwright··on Privacy concerns are breaking the Census
If the census simply enumerated the population, then I don't think there are the same level of concerns.

The data they are collecting related to demographics is beyond what is necessary for congressional apportionment. If they collected only the required data; then there would not be a need to fuzz it.

cpwright··on My Many Girlfriends
I used to use i, j, and k; but at my last job single letter variables were frowned upon so I started using ii, jj, and kk and now much prefer those for simple loops. Searching for "ii" yields the loop much more reliably and quickly than "i" which is often a partial match to other words.
cpwright··on Evidence for a mouse origin of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant
Determining that it is only severe as the flu will take time and the flu is not a monolithic entity. Beyond that, even if rationally it is no worse than the flu, there is going to be a non-trivial segment of people and their elected representatives that are going to demand we contain COVID spread even if the cost outweighs the benefits in the opinion of many others.
cpwright··on Pelosi defends stock trading by lawmakers. ‘We are a free-market economy’
In general, an information disparity is good; it means you have done work to learn something and incorporate that into prices. If you are right, you deserve to be rewarded.

Insider trading is when you steal the information from someone else (often your employer) to make those trades - misappropriating value for yourself that does not belong to you.

cpwright··on The data behind New York's increasingly dirty electricity peaks
Cuomo and Riverkeeper entered into a deal with Entergy to shut down Indian Point Energy Center.

I am personally disappointed because it provided good jobs in my community and 1/3 of my school district's revenue.

cpwright··on Against Dog Ownership (2020)
We have an unaltered male GSD, and he is the nicest creature you could hope to meet. Our breeder asked that we leave him intact so that he would grow into the impressive animal that he has.

There are studies that show, at least for large dogs, that hip and joint problems are less prevalent if the dog is not neutered before 1 year old (or not at all). Roughly, the intuition is that in males it allows the testosterone to have muscles grow to match their bones.

cpwright··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
Zoning and building codes set forth by a municipality do not necessarily have to be followed by the state government (presuming the UC system counts as part of the state government).
cpwright··on Which jobs most often pair together among married couples
This is presumably US data given it is from the "American Community Survey". The 90% male ratio is true globally, however in the US, 25% of software developers are female.
cpwright··on People Now Spend More at Amazon Than at Walmart
Home Depot stores the receipts by credit card; so that if you use a card saved to your online account you automatically will see your in-store purchases show up.
cpwright··on Law school applicants surge 13%, biggest increase since dot-com bubble
The plumber who is making more than a doctor is likely also a business owner. There are two skills needed there, the actual plumbing and also running a business. To be particularly successful, you need to be good at both.
cpwright··on Open Insulin Foundation
A vial and a pen are different. A vial has 10 units. I use between 1 and 2 vials a month. I weigh 70kg, I use about 40-50 units a day via pump [which is more efficient than a pen]. My prescription co-pay is $10 for the two vials of Humalog [a 30 day supply].
cpwright··on Puppy Pregnancy in Humans: A Culture-Bound Disorder (2003)
People like dogs, and your dog at least appears to like you back. If they don't really like us, their behavior is enough of a facsimile that it doesn't even matter.

I spend more time with my dog than anyone except my wife and kids; and it is pretty close to the amount I spend with my teenagers given that they have their own interests and activities. With that much time together, there is just naturally a bond.

cpwright··on Americans Are Keeping Their Cars Longer, as Vehicle Age Hits 12 Years
As a counterpoint, I installed a Kenwood Carplay unit and backup camera in an F150 a few years ago and was not very difficult at all. It took a couple of evenings (one for the camera one for the head unit).

Crutchfield will sell you a plug and play adapter from your factory radio to the new radio's pin outs. They do the wiring so you don't have to solder anything.

Having navigation and a backup camera definitely made it much nicer to drive.

cpwright··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
This totally depends on the jurisdiction. In NYS, your taxing authority (town, school district) has some levy that is approved. Your share of the levy is roughly your property's assessed value divided by the total assessed value of properties in that taxing jurisdiction. There are some complicating factors like when a taxing authority like a school district spans multiple assessing authorities (like a town/city); but the basic concept is sound.

I was very surprised when I learned other places charge you some fixed fraction of the property value; and as that value goes up the budget of the municipality goes up.

cpwright··on We are publishing the tax secrets of the .001%
The problem with selling your home isn't the income tax on the gains. That would be new money you have. The problem is that the closing costs are very high and that you have to pay yearly property taxes on it whether or not you are selling it.

In NYS, you would lose 2% for selling a home in transfer tax (of the value not the gain); and then if you are financing another home 1.25% of the mortgage value. So right there you've lit 3% of the two transactions on fire. That doesn't even count the non-government fees like commissions, attorneys (for you and the bank), title insurance, etc. that eat quickly eat up many thousands of dollars.

cpwright··on The modern trap of turning hobbies into hustles (2019)
> B) Love not learning or doing other fun things because a career trumps all things in life

I think that this dismisses the joy of learning things that are unrelated to your day job or any hustle. I enjoy woodworking, turning it into a side hustle where I need to justify expenses would suck the joy out of it. I do something that is not work, recharge, and it is intellectually stimulating even if it is nothing like my day job in software.

cpwright··on Penthouses and poor doors: how Europe's 'biggest regeneration project' fell flat
What surprises me most is that London seemingly has no tow trucks for cars blocking emergency egress from a building for months. Presumably a boot is useless if they aren't going to pay the fines anyway, but it would seem that they probably would want the "supercar" back.
cpwright··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
You could also just get a spray in bedliner, they are pretty darn tough. Shoveling dirty into/out of them will not have any negative effect and you can then sweep or hose it out.
cpwright··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
I have a supercab and I am happy that I have the 6.5' bed to go with it, I can lay 4'x8' sheets flat with the tailgate down. Combined with a backrack/hitch extender I can get 16' long lumber.

The backseat is passable with my dog and kids, but barely. If they were able to take some room from the front where there is no engine and give me both a reasonable bed and a crew cab I would be happy.

A lockable frunk is pretty attractive though so that you don't have to worry about leaving tools in the bed.

cpwright··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
If you are into home improvement it is very easy if you are getting materials, hauling garbage, bringing tools from one place to another. You could substitute a trailer for a lot of stuff, but then you need to park that. Parking the truck instead of an SUV/car is easier than parking the SUV/car + a trailer.
cpwright··on 100 Largest Landowners in America
The Mormons own a lot of land in Florida, and I would guess also Utah.

cpwright··on $365B wiped off cryptocurrency market after Tesla stops accepting Bitcoin
I think the Colonial attack has made many people think about cryptocurrencies and the potential for more regulation given the publicity and impact to society. There is no need for him to get any special "tip" to make that determination, or at least have it part of the mosaic of information he uses to evaluate cryptocurrencies.
cpwright··on Experian’s credit freeze security is still a joke
Even if the landlord was willing to rent to you by mitigating the risk in this way; at least in NY state that would not be legal anymore.

The state recently limited security deposits to a single month, and do not permit taking more than one months rent up front. This was meant to help tenants avoid having to come up with more money, but of course landlords will simply mitigate the risk by not renting to some people at all or only for a higher monthly amount.

https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/changes-in-nys-rent-la... "Capping Security Deposits • Landlords can only charge up to one month of rent for a security deposit or “advance payment.” This applies to all residential rentals, with a few exceptions, whether you have a lease or not. › This means that if you are moving into an apartment where the rent is $1500 a month, the most your landlord can charge for a security deposit is $1500. › This also means that your landlord may not charge you in advance for the last month’s rent if you are also paying a security deposit."

cpwright··on Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress
That is bad policy. There is a segment of middle/upper class Americans who own stock; anyone with a retirement plan that funds it. Forcing middle/upper class legislatures into a cash position instead of stocks would make them less, not more connected to similarly placed people. If they can't own stock does that mean they'll just instead invest in real estate which can be even more conflicted?

Of course, if they held widely diversified Index funds there would be fewer conflicts - but not zero as evidenced by legislators trading around COVID briefings.

cpwright··on The Penguin Oil Industry (2019)
I don't know that there is respect for the cow; but the cow is an asset that you've paid for. You don't want to waste the cow, because it cost you money either to buy or raise. The wild penguins cost you nothing, so wasting them has no impact on you. Wild Bison were not used responsibly either.
cpwright··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
I think the idea of "rich kids can go to private schools" is not actually the what is the largest driver inequality of outcomes for children. Roughly 10% of K12 pupils attend private school in the US. I was unable to find anything that pointed towards a definitive increase in private school enrollment; though that doesn't mean that it isn't there.

Sure, the "rich" families can afford private school tuition; but even just well-off families are better able to handle the at home school situation. They are more likely to have flexible schedules or work from home arrangements that allow them to properly supervise their children's learning - which I hypothesize that this better being able to supervise remote learning, is a much bigger driver of divergent outcomes than the fairly small number of private school pupils.

cpwright··on On power markets, snow storms, and $16k power bills
The smart meter can already be disabled remotely. I have one in NY that will alternate between its reading and "CLOSED" meaning that the circuit is connected. As a parent poster pointed out, the power company, however, cannot disconnect you without proper notice.
cpwright··on The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company
I haven't come to that yet, but when our 3 year old GSD went blind, even though it was an elective surgery it wasn't a super difficult choice to spend that much to restore his sight (cataract surgery) given that the same problem basically can't come back. He is six now, and it has really improved his quality of life (he enjoys chasing sticks in the lake again). If he was 10, we would probably not have made the same choice to spend the money; because he would get much less benefit from it.

You spend more time with your dog than most people, and I certainly care about him more than any person who is not in my immediate family.

cpwright··on FedEx and UPS hit companies with unexpected holiday shipping limits
That does not match my experience in NY suburbs. Amazon is evenly split between UPS and USPS. Other merchants are Fedex Home Delivery, UPS or USPS also fairly evenly split.
