cowholio4··on YouTube removed a viral video of two doctors calling for an end to quarantine
Not only were they completely wrong with their numbers, they even were wrong in their assessment of Fauci. They said they “are actually seeing the patients, Dr Fauci hasn’t seen a patient in 20 years.”

In 2015, Dr Fauci personally helped take care of an Ebola patient when most of the world was terrified of Ebola.

cowholio4··on San Francisco considers banning cashless Amazon stores
Dealing with cash is expensive. You physically have to move it and protect it from getting stolen by thieves and even employees.
cowholio4··on Low Level Bit Hacks You Absolutely Must Know
Surprised I didn’t see this one on the lists.

Shifting left by n bits on a signed or unsigned binary number has the effect of multiplying it by 2^n. Shifting right by n bits on a two's complement signed binary number has the effect of dividing it by 2^n, but it always rounds down (towards negative infinity).

I thought that was done legally by leasing a new car every few months. And that loophole is part of the motivation for the new temporary plates in CA.

cowholio4··on Show HN: Investment Calculator – A simple retirement calculator
Pretty cool! I use the "Retirement Planner" from Personal Capital (like Mint but for investments) Some of the notable features are:

- Adding future income events (social security, pension, etc)

- Inflation adjusted.

- Set future spending goals (buying a house, wedding, health care)

- You can also save different simulations and get a percentage chance of hitting that goal. I have one for if Social Security doesn't exist when I retire, another one for early retirement, etc.

It's free to sign up. https://personalcapital.com/

cowholio4··on Show HN: Investment Calculator – A simple retirement calculator
I like how this calculator includes fees. Fees are so often overlooked when calculating retirement.

"Lots of people are unknowingly paying 2%, and more, in annual fees. At a low-cost brokerage you can get away with 0.5%. See what a difference that does to your final balance."

cowholio4··on Think twice before encrypting your HFS+ volumes on High Sierra
Initially I was regretting upgrading as well. Crazy high CPU as a 'kernel_task' which in turn made my machine unusable. It would completely lock up.

I ran 'kexstat' via the terminal to check out what kernel extensions I had that might be causing the issues. The only third party extensions I had were VirtualBox and Avira. Uninstalled Avira and now things are buttery smooth.

cowholio4··on In Search Of The Red Cross' $500M In Haiti Relief (2015)
One thing that gets overlooked commonly with the the Red Cross is that it is a congressional charter. [1]

According to the charter the purposes of the corporation are:

(1) to provide volunteer aid in time of war to the sick and wounded of the armed forces, in accordance with the spirit and conditions of: (A) the conference of Geneva of October, 1863; (B) the treaties of the Red Cross, or the treaties of Geneva, of August 22, 1864, July 27, 1929, and August 12, 1949, to which the United States of America has given its adhesion; and (C) any other treaty, convention, or protocol similar in purpose to which the United States of America has given or may give its adhesion;

(2) in carrying out the purposes described in clause (1) of this section, to perform all the duties devolved on a national society by each nation that has acceded to any of those treaties, conventions, or protocols; (3) to act in matters of voluntary relief and in accordance with the military authorities as a medium of communication between the people of the United States and the armed forces of the United States and to act in those matters between similar national societies of governments of other countries through the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Government, the people, and the armed forces of the United States

The problem is that sure we can donate to other organizations but the Red Cross still is in a way a representive of America. And if they are so bad at delivering aid to Haiti; I wonder how effective they are at their other duties. I wonder if congress can revoke their charter? Or force reform? But that seems like an almost impossible task.

cowholio4··on In Search Of The Red Cross' $500M In Haiti Relief (2015)
This report prompted a congressional report a year later. Ultimately Red Cross is a horribly inefficient way to give aid to areas in need of relief.

cowholio4··on In Search Of The Red Cross' $500M In Haiti Relief (2015)
This was widely reported back in 2015 when this was published. You might want to add (2015) to the title.
cowholio4··on T-Mobile adds 1.3M customers in Q2, continues to grab wireless share
I am a big fan of Google Fi. It's $10/GB pretty much everywhere in the world. Really great if you are hopping around to different countries. Also you can get additional data only sims for no charge.

I used T-Mobile for a trip in the past and found it to be pretty frustrating.

cowholio4··on How hackers abused satellites to stay under the radar (2015)
I assume by looking at the command and control ips and looking for what is common. (IE that they were from satellite ISPs)

cowholio4··on Hosting Multiple HTTPS Domains from the Same Server with Let's Encrypt and Nginx
Yes! I do with NGINX using SNI (to server multiple ssl certs from the same IP) and using Proxy Protocol on the ELB to send the requests to NGINX.

What you need to do is enable the proxy protocol on the ELB and then point to NGINX. http://docs.aws.amazon.com/elasticloadbalancing/latest/class...

You need to also enable the proxy_protocol in nginx.

  server {
    listen    443 ssl proxy_protocol;
    ...
  }
I'll write something up and share it. But hopefully this will help you in the short term.
cowholio4··on Advance in high-pressure physics
This has been the week for high pressure experiments. Scientists were also able to create a stable helium-sodium compound under high pressures.

cowholio4··on Advance in high-pressure physics
There are some skeptics. "Their main concern is that Silvera and Dias really only have one data point: a single measurement of the reflectivity of their sample at high pressure. While that could indicate metallic hydrogen, it could also be something else, like the alumina coating they used on the diamonds to prevent hydrogen from leaking into the crystal and making it brittle." http://www.forbes.com/sites/samlemonick/2017/01/27/theres-re...
cowholio4··on I'm giving up on PGP
Yeah... definitely not the best experience. But it's free software so I'm not going to complain.

I have been using enigma on thunderbird in the meantime, which makes me appreciate how well the native mail app functions.

Can't wait for that fix.

cowholio4··on I'm giving up on PGP
- All internal company emails. - Mailing Lists

Side note: using pgp with MacOs Mail is super easy https://gpgtools.org/ (the project is currently working on Sierra support)

cowholio4··on Transparent DNS proxies

cowholio4··on On Phone Numbers and Identity
It's always great to see effective incidence response and proactive employees. Congrats Coinbase and thank you for sharing. Your experience will make the rest of us more aware.

Two months ago the NIST announced that SMS for out of band authentication was deprecated. It makes sense. Phone numbers have a much bigger attack vector compared to Yubikey and Google Authenticator. This incident is a perfect example.

cowholio4··on UK's oldest hand-written document 'at Roman London dig'
Whenever I see these big construction projects I see a bunch of big tools and people moving lots of dirt fast. So I'm always surprised when discoveries like this happen. Is it by accident? Or do the excavators have a team on hand looking for "treasure"?

cowholio4··on Use AWS Lambda to self-host the comments for your blog
Yeah, I didn't really make that part clear. You have to create an API Gateway.

Luckily, AWS lets you share API definitions so I added that to the repo. It's the swagger.json file. I'll try to get this all automated to make it super simple, but for now you just have to replace all those placeholders.

cowholio4··on Use AWS Lambda to self-host the comments for your blog
We use Lambda for our contact form; it's great. Our website is completely hosted on s3/cloudfront so it's much cheaper and stable than running a dedicated machine.

If I get some time this weekend, I'll clean it and push it up to github.

[EDIT] Here it is. This has been working for us for almost a year. If there is interest, I can clean it up.

cowholio4··on Volkswagen Reaches Deal in U.S. Over Emissions Scandal
I read somewhere yesterday that the price would be the price before the news of the scandal broke out. But that was part of the onslaught of rumors that came out yesterday. And apparently we would have a couple years to decide.
cowholio4··on Google.com partially dangerous
I think the big problem is that Google does a poor job cleaning up user generated content on their own properties. Google Groups, Google Drive, Feedburner, GoogleSites and Blogspot are continuously used to deliver phishing/malware. It also doesn't help that google sometimes hosts those on it's google.com domain or uses their google.com domain to redirect to those sites.
