covercash··on HomePod Mini
They've had it for a year or so. From the HomePod site:

A personalized experience. For each person in the family. Together with Siri, HomePod can learn and recognize up to six different voices and create a personalized listening experience for everybody at home. So when they say “Hey Siri, play some music” they’ll get a mix of songs customized just for them — picked from Apple Music based on their listening history and personal preferences. And with Personal Requests, they can access their own messages, reminders, lists, and calendars, and make and receive phone calls.

covercash··on Ferrari is bricked during upgrade due to no mobile reception while underground
> the car has an anti-theft device that was triggered by the installation of seats. There is a remote system to override the anti-theft device, but that doesn't work because it requires mobile reception.

I’ve been following the thread on Reddit and there’s an added piece you’re missing. The mechanic triggered the anti-theft device so the car went into an initial lock down, that can be disabled remotely by Ferrari. The mechanic contacts Ferrari who can’t override the anti-theft because the car is without signal. At this stage the anti-theft mechanism is also attempting to contact Ferrari, probably with location data to help recover the car, still thinking it has been stolen. But due to the fact that it can’t get a signal out, it assumes the worst and enters full lock down mode that requires some sort of fix that can only be performed by Ferrari themselves.

covercash··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
I think a simple Youtube-dl + web based front end that can run on a Raspberry Pi would be a great way to help lots of people bypass YouTube.com/apps, make it as simple as PiHole for users to get going. Have it organize files in a way that would allow clients like Plex to easily access that content. Easy 4k + ad-free content on any device.
covercash··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
The biggest drawback to this is the lack of support for 4K in the YouTube app on Apple TV.
covercash··on Someone has stolen my Instagram account
This happened a while back to Brian Hoff’s wife, he was able to eventually get it back: https://medium.com/@behoff/they-say-nothing-will-change-5c54...
covercash··on Show HN: Tired of reading NerdWallet to see the best credit card? I automated it
I backed up at the email request and scrolled down to the FAQ. This was the part that made me leave:

> Trove is just a passion project right now.

Right now. But maybe tomorrow they’ll change their mind?

covercash··on Ex-Googler's startup comes out of stealth with simple, clever robot design
> Personally, though, I would bet on dedicated, single-purpose robots, working together through wireless communication.

This reminds me of the little swarm of robots that come out of the walls to clean up spills in The Fifth Element.

covercash··on Apple Lightning
Someone once commented here on HN that Apple engineering departments get boxes of Anker cables delivered all the time since they’re so much better than Apple’s own. I wish I had saved the link.
covercash··on Ask HN: My wife might lose the ability to speak in 3 weeks – how to prepare?
Other resources you may want to explore are r/mute and r/deaf subreddits. Both also have Discord servers listed in the sidebars.

Having spent a good deal of time in hospitals, a few things I recommend... 10’ phone cable since outlets can sometimes be far from the bed, cheap slippers she can wear to walk around (stepping in a hospital hallway mystery puddle wearing just socks is very unpleasant), comfy clothes that you don’t mind having ruined (T-shirts, underwear, shirts, pajama pants - they can temporarily unhook the IV so she can put a T-shirt on), earplugs, eye mask. If she’s going to be on liquid-only diet, bring your own since hospital food is not great, not terrible. Soylent/Orgain/Ensure if she’s permitted that, otherwise good quality Italian ices are such a nice treat and most hospitals have a patient fridge/freezer you can store them in. Broth, but go to a restaurant or grocery store/farmers market with hot soup bar and fill a container with just the broth from the chicken noodle soup. It’s INFINITELY better than boxed broth.

Hopefully all of your research and preparation will be for nothing, I wish you and your wife a successful surgery!

covercash··on Reddit Welcomes Michael Seibel to Board of Directors
Read the article again, you’re reversing what’s happening... Alexis isn’t joining YC/HN’s board, he stepped down from Reddit and is being replaced by Michael Seibel. Michael is YC’s current CEO.
covercash··on You can bypass YouTube ads by adding a dot after the domain
It’s insane to me that they don’t include Premium with a YouTube TV subscription. I’d immediately switch from AT&T Now (formerly Directv Now) if they included Premium, even as a discounted add on.
covercash··on Instagram no longer allows people without an account to view photos on computers
I hate when sites don’t accept + modified email addresses.
covercash··on Foursquare Merges with Factual
For a while now, friends and family have been relying on me for restaurant recommendations whenever they travel. Foursquare is my starting place and I then use Infatuation and Yelp written reviews (not their star ratings) to narrow things down.
covercash··on Stanford researchers confirm N95 masks can be sterilized in oven
I wonder if we could vacuum pack the masks and put them in a sous vide, it would be a lot easier to implement than finding enough ovens for all of the masks.

As for the bleach leaving skin and respiratory irritants, maybe hypochlorous acid (HOCl) might be a good alternative?

covercash··on Puncture-proof tires are the future
Come visit Philly — eat a cheesesteak, see some art, pop a tire!

Probably any city in the northeast during or right after winter will have plenty of tire popping potholes.

covercash··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
Scriptnotes in general is a good one for anyone wanting to get a better understanding of movies, television, and storytelling. Bonus points because John August builds modern tools for screenwriters including apps for reading and writing screenplays (Weekend Read & Highland), a new markup and file format (https://fountain.io), and they even designed a new version of the Courier font (Courier Prime). Lots of interesting crossover between the world of making movies and the world of software development and startups.
covercash··on Snopes Under Legal Attack from Salon.com
Sounds a lot like a SLAPP suit, something John Oliver covered this week: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UN8bJb8biZU
covercash··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard
I’d love to see benchmarks on an ER-4/6/8, especially with gigabit WAN availability becoming more common.

covercash··on Baltimore Blew Off Ransomware Demand Only to Find Data Had Never Been Backed Up
Nope, the district had no idea they were doing that until after the firing. I did hear the actual reason was because they were considering joining a union, but I didn’t stick around long enough to dig any deeper.
covercash··on Baltimore Blew Off Ransomware Demand Only to Find Data Had Never Been Backed Up
I briefly worked for a school district that had 8000 Macs to support. They fired the entire technical team (for reasons unknown) except for me and then proceeded to hire people who had never used a Mac in their life. The woman in charge of the department was like Lorraine Bracco’s character in Hackers - extremely overpaid, could barely figure out how to work a computer, and used God as her password. I’m still disgusted when I think about how corrupt and incompetent that district was and likely still is. A few of the fired guys wound up with a nice settlement, I’m sure the webcam recordings of the superintendent exchanging teaching positions for “favors” probably worked to their advantage.
covercash··on Samsung: Anyone's thumbprint can unlock Galaxy S10 phone
And Demolition Man where he used an eyeball on a pen to fool the optical scanner.
covercash··on Tesla Software Version 10.0
I wonder if they can just run CarPlay/Android Auto in a VM and display it on 1/2 the screen?
covercash··on Toilet paper startups
I wish I could eat keto, unfortunately my body requires starchy food.

And good luck getting the rest of America to voluntarily cut it out!

covercash··on Toilet paper startups
It’s one of the best quality of life upgrades you can make, I recommend bidets to everyone!
covercash··on Toilet paper startups
You can get one of the cheaper $20-60 washlets on Amazon (I like Luxe Bidet), they tap into the toilet’s water line and can be installed in under 20 minutes. And when it’s time for you to move out, they’re just as easy to remove and your landlord will never know how squeaky clean your butt is!
covercash··on 3D Ken Burns Effect from a Single Image
I’ve manually done that in the past using Photoshop and multiple layers in Final Cut Pro, it was very time consuming. I wonder if this method requires you to isolate the layers manually.
covercash··on MoviePass will shut down for good on Sept. 14
People would quickly learn how to abuse that system by just waiting to purchase tickets.

I think the theater+restaurant combos would actually be ideal for the Moviepass model since they can offset the cost of the ticket with food/alcohol sales. They could even limit it to 3 movies/wk like AMC and probably do well. The theater+restaurant near me offers a $5 ticket Tuesday promotion and most showings throughout the day are full. If they charged me $25/mo I’d definitely pop in 1-2 times a week to watch a movie while I eat a meal.

Maybe when parked additional solar panels could “deploy” out of the trunk/frunk?
