convery··on Two of the UK's water companies are still using dowsing to find leaks
Sometimes people just want to "see" work being done, rather than trusting that it's based on statistics/previous work/gut-feeling. Kind of like when you add a loading icon to an action that has already been completed in the background to show the user that it's working.
convery··on UK proposal to criminalize “sophisticated encrypted communication devices”

convery··on Twitter has fewer than 550 full time engineers
FYI, Elon Tweeted[0] a response to the article saying they have about double the headcount reported by CNBC. So take it with a grain of salt.

convery··on Microbenchmarking AMD’s RDNA 3 Graphics Architecture
I remember articles on the 3000 series where manufacturers were reporting that Nvidia was selling the chips themselves at higher price than the MSRP for the entire card. So ye, take that with a scoop of salt =P
convery··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
So the tl;dr: "If you don't want your kid to be stalked, and the car driving them assaulted, surround them with bodyguards 24/7 or stop being famous". HN really is turning into Reddit these days..
convery··on KATT (Klarna API Testing Tool) Is an HTTP-Based API Testing Tool for Erlang
Where in Sweden have you ever heard someone pronounce 'katt' anywhere close to 'cut'? Maybe you misheard someone say 'kut' (baby seal)?
convery··on Tell HN: Cloudflare Is Blocking Piped
Not to mention that their priorities when it comes to blocking decisions seems odd. DDoS-for-hire (stressers), piracy, ISIS support-forums, revenge-porn etc. are all fine because free speech. But a forum supporting nazis, an imagebord with lax moderators, and a forum archiving illegal/insane activity that people post online are all nuked because.. ... reasons..
convery··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
Then the company can hire more engineers? Even if devs in SF virtue-signal on Twitter about how they'd never work under Musk, a competitive paycheck attracts outsiders.
convery··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
He announced that he will not take any action against that account as it's free speech. So need to find a new "gotcha" / narrative / joke.
convery··on The gut microbiome helps social skills develop in the brain in fish
Counterpoint: Scandinavian countries has had fermented dairy as a core part of our diet for centuries, and we are frigid AF until we get a pint in us.
convery··on Twitter users jump to Mastodon, but what is it?
Ye, seems like a good fit for the terminally-online Twitter users as their main complaint about Elon is him wanting to be fair in terms of moderation and not favouring their side. Even launched their Twitter clone called "Tribal" to have a "fascist free" alternative without wrongthink..
convery··on Twitter launches blue check for $7.99 monthly fee
Seems like he's making it more of a "verified human" mark as a bot-farm is not going to pay for 1000 marks that can get banned. Not to mention backend protections such as 1 mark per creditcard, or checking the name of the holder against the account etc. might be somewhat effective at reducing spam..
convery··on Twitter launches blue check for $7.99 monthly fee
Worth pointing out is that although anyone can apply, Twitter has been very selective regarding approval and it's been more of a "Twitter approves of your content" rather than them verifying your identity.

For example: @disclosetv, they have 1M followers, tonnes of articles / media about them, public org and related paperwork, yet they have been rejected 10+ times (IIRC). They mainly repost/cover news that isn't widely covered in MSM/social media.

Meanwhile, random Buzzfeed contributor #9432, 40-view political Twitch streamer #347, satire-account pretending to be a crazy right-winger #12..

convery··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
According to the engineers in the undercover interviews, a large part of the staff only work "when they feel like it", which would result in some taking months of paid time off or just hanging out in the office all day.

kloc is not great as a general metric, but in this case it might make it obvious where you can trim a lot of fat..

convery··on Chainalysis CTO said blockchain is easier to trace than paper money
The "without telling who the parties are" is more about non-personal identifiers. Similar to how knowing your IP address doesn't really identify you by itself, you need to go through (often several levels of) other parties to get that info. Which in addition is ephemeral, others will be assigned your IP and tracing which requests were made by you vs. someone else is a lot harder than tracing a credit-card.
convery··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
> If 48.2 million are breaking a law, it’s probably the law that’s wrong.

*glances over at the IRS*

convery··on Whistleblower: Pentagon purchased tool collecting Americans' web browsing data
Reminds me of the Snowden leaks where the NSA and the Swedish FRA had a deal as neither was allowed to spy on their own citizens, so they just spied on eachother and then shared the data.
convery··on Checkout trader's joe logo on Google
> Though if this post gets enough attention, it'll probably get fixed in a few days.

Was just fixed for me at least, both .com and .se no longer shows any logo.

convery··on Checkout trader's joe logo on Google
Sweden: Saw it 5 minutes ago, now there's no logo at all.
convery··on Checkout trader's joe logo on Google
Yep, and there's not much google can do about it as every metric can be gamed. Remember the "upvote this thread so that this image is the first result when searching for [politicians name]" campaigns on Reddit the past 6 years? =P
convery··on The spam on Twitter
The whole "verified person" / "credible account" went out the window years ago when it became a "twitter approved politics" badge. Remember when the drama around 'SJW's were at its height, people started creating obviously fake accounts and spamming the talking points (e.g. #killallmen) to get their accounts verified..
convery··on Two atomic clocks have been quantum entangled for the first time
No, as you can't influence the outcome of the measurement. So both parties reads a bit, which is random, they just happen to be opposite of eachother. No useful information is transmitted.
convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
> Do you think you provided a reasonable and objective analysis of events and viewpoints?

No, I provided a selection of examples from the two HN threads on the happenings to demonstrate the subjectivity of what people consider harassment.

convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
Maybe should have specified 'US' law-enforcement as it's a US site ran by a US citizen.

The citations on Wikipedia are interesting though (from the perspective of what's considered a reliable source when it comes to controversial pages). e.g. [19] says that the operator was "allegedly removed for promoting paedophilia". The same guy that wanted to ban discussions about 'VTubers' because some of their 2D models looked too young and might attract pedos to his site. So take that with a grain of salt.

convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
No, but peoples definition of what is considered harassment varies wildly. As can be seen in this very thread: Keffals doxing people is not harassment, Keffals calling for their Ukrainian supporters to spread that KF's admin is pro-Putin is not harassment, "pressuring" KF's admins mother is not harassment, journalists doxing and lying about LibsOfTiktok is not harassment; but KF archiving Keffals tweets where they admit to illegal activities is, KF posting the dox of someone sharing DDoS tools is, KF laughing at someone being silly is.
convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
We may never know as they've deleted their tweets, if only there was some kind of forum archiving these kinds of people constantly incriminating themselves while grifting..
convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
They do indeed handle a lot of UGC, the vast majority of which is filtered out by AI and then teams upon teams to review inconclusive results / reports. Millions of users that can report what the AI and teams missed. With a quarterly revenue of $29 billion to fund their efforts. With all that it still takes 30 minutes for mass-reports to reach a human, weeks or longer for less reported content.

KF is operating at a loss with volunteers trying to filter the content and handling the reports; still the vast majority is handled within minutes.

The ratio of investment/resources to response-time should be in FBs favour, yet them being slow / inefficient is expected while a small forum "can't successfully moderate" if it takes 13 minutes to remove a problematic post that few users ever even saw.

convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
> Stay hydrated and keep cool. I've made silly statements before on HN when I'm dehydrated or flustered

You may want to consider your own advice mate.

convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
> This is incredibly dishonest. It took me less than 1 minute to find anti-semetism

Eh, a few users using naughty words on the internet doesn't really say much about what a site "is all about". Unless you're equating "naughty words" with "horrible person" and extrapolate a narrative about what such a person could possibly post. Which is a pretty Twitter-level view of the world..

convery··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
> with a signature boasting about their involvement in threads that resulted in people killing themselves

> quite a few reply with "doxx", "nigga/er", and "jew". That should say enough.

Pretty sure claiming that they are celebrating their killcount and using naughty words are different things.
