Screenshot since I assume this will be fixed pretty quickly: https://i.imgur.com/WCbvynl.png

I wonder if the thought occurred to them to extract the image from the top result site instead of whatever else their AI thought would be appropriate. Yes, that can also be gamed, but at least they'll be consistent.

imgur is down for me. https://twitter.com/elietoubiana/status/1570262868825894914

The image links back to a blog/article which references Trader Joe's.

If an algorithm is selecting the 'most appropriate image' for a search of a Store or Brand, that is worrisome as it will surely be gamed.

Political Google bombing has been a thing for a long time, and while the details of how it is done and what it acheives changes, it probably will be for a very long time in the future.

Yep, and there's not much google can do about it as every metric can be gamed. Remember the "upvote this thread so that this image is the first result when searching for [politicians name]" campaigns on Reddit the past 6 years? =P

On Google News something that drives me crazy is when the thumbnail image next to an article isn't actually in the article.

omg yes, worst thing ever. also, when the thumbnail does not appear in the youtube video.

Seems like it got fixed in most geos Here is an image for posterity: https://twitter.com/elietoubiana/status/1570262868825894914

Unrelated but fun fact: There was a Pirate Joes in Vancouver BC that existed solely to resell TJ's goods, it was awesome

For those not seeing it not scrolling down, the “Google info” is showing a logo that clearly referenced Biden and says “Traitor Joe”.

Either TJs has gone unexpectedly political or Google’s AI is going weird again.

Might be geolocation based? I’m in Europe and don’t see it.

Sweden: Saw it 5 minutes ago, now there's no logo at all.

I see it on desktop but not mobile.

I see it on mobile (USA)

I don’t (USA)

I'm in Australia and I see it

I'm in Brazil and I see it.

It's gone.

I did not find an English source, but a French energy giant got its google description replaced by a tweet by a left wing politician two weeks ago.

It seems it was an algorithm malfunction.

Looks like it's fixed :(

Image is gone now for me.

Don't see the Biden logo, but I happen to be traveling in France and the top result is perhaps even worse: https://imgur.com/a/SdCrl8G

Crypto scam spam

I wouldn't call it that unless you call all defi crypto a scam (such is reasonable). Trader Joe is a very popular crypto platform

I dunno, a TJCoin backed by the Browniechain sounds like a pretty compelling currency at this point...

Not sure how someone pulled that out? Maybe internal employee

Seems like this is just Googlebombing. People do it all the time, most famous was "miserable failure" returning images of George W Bush.

Oh, there were so many famous ones

For at least an entire year, "French military victories" top result was "did you mean French military defeats"

For several weeks, Google reported the "political philosophy" of the California Republican Party to be "Nazism".

And of course there was what happened to Rick Santorum (which remained in place for at least an entire election cycle despite gaining fairly widespread attention at the time)

This sort of thing happens from time to time. The most common cause is wikipedia vandalism that gets indexed, though in this case it seems to be a very highly-ranked image search result for the image on reason.com.

It's fairly common for these things to appear, and also surprisingly common for them to last a long time after they come to light, unless a Grade AA stink is made about it. As a general rule, Google won't remove something like this directly from their index unless they "have to", and will instead add it to the training/test set for their "bad result" model and will then wait until the models take it down themselves (if they ever do).

Though if this post gets enough attention, it'll probably get fixed in a few days.

Was just fixed for me at least, both .com and .se no longer shows any logo.

It's just boring old gaming of the algorithms, unlikely any human at Google was involved in selecting that image.
