conscion··on I built an ROV to solve missing person cases

conscion··on Intel Brags of $152B in Stock Buybacks. Why Does It Need an $8B Subsidy?
Companies don't exist for returning money to shareholders, but issuing stock exists to return money to shareholders.

1. Company issues stock in order raise capital

2. Company uses capital to grow business

3. Company returns money to stock purchases as risk-reward for purchasing stock

Buy-backs are what a company _should_ do once the capital it raised has had a positive ROI

conscion··on Godot Engine GPT
I had to go to the ChatGPT main interface and then back to the Godot GPT; and then it picked up my login.
conscion··on MS Teams channels cannot contain MS-DOS device names
This is most likely due to those names not being allowed for files or folders in the Windows file system. MS Teams channels create a matching folder in SharePoint where file attachments are stored.
conscion··on Free prison phone calls boost family ties, rehabilitation
Being paid for labor is not usually considered "profit".
conscion··on Companies Requiring Full-Time In-Office Are Struggling to Recruit New Employees
You have to remember where you are. Hacker News is going to have some selection bias on people who _enjoy_ their job. By trying to stay up-to-date on the latest software news, they're probably career driven people.

Imagine how many people who are fully WFH who don't have this attitude. Do you think they're also more "productive" than if they were in an environment that forced them to do their work?

conscion··on Why “free” street parking could be costing you hundreds more in rent
> A lot of the dense new housing has essentially zero guest parking often making it difficult to visit my friends

difficult to visit your friends ... for free. There's probably paid parking somewhere nearby willing to take your money in exchange for storing your car

conscion··on US adult cigarette smoking rate hits new all-time low
If you read OPs article, they imply that a lot of cigarettes addictive quality is due to the MAO inhibitors, not the nicotine
conscion··on The Twitter API is now effectively unmaintained
> 70 percent a certain VC constantly shaking his fist

> And this is after aggressively curating my feed

If you're "aggressively curating [your] feed", just mute/block them

conscion··on Police sue rapper Afroman for using footage of home raid in his music videos
They should, and since they work for a government agency, they do regardless of the union. If they don't like how their department is run, the can work to elect politicians who support their department.

The true issue with public unions is that they can elect their own bosses. There can't be good-faith negotiation if the position of the "boss" is dependent on supporting the union.

conscion··on GPT4 and the Multi-Modal, Multi-Model, Multi-Everything Future of AGI
This reads just like the plot of Neuromancer
conscion··on Young men say why many of them are single: ‘Dates feel more like job interviews’
My guess is a typo and they just meant TC (Total Compensation; their base salary + any bonus/stock)
conscion··on ERs are hiring fewer doctors to save money
Profit is a strong incentive when there's active competition. When there's not competition, for-profit business turn to extracting rents on captive customers.

Health care larger is not a competitive market. Lots of customers only have limited options (i.e. rural hospitals) and the urgency of some purchases don't support competition (i.e. ER visits)

conscion··on Gattaca is still pertinent 25 years later
Except he then cheats on the cardio test, thus reinforcing that the genetic test was valid and he shouldn't be allowed on the trip.
conscion··on Therapod dinosaurs had primate-like numbers of neurons

conscion··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
Spectacle is how Musk brands and motivates his companies. Tesla was originally climate change and lately has been self-driving. Space X is colonizing Mars. Twitter will be "radical transparency".

Even if Twitter does the exact same actions, Musk will frame them all as"radical transparency"

conscion··on BloomTech, previously Lambda School, cuts half of staff
Austen, I bet it takes you a ton of time to write all this up and I want you to know it's appreciated. It's really insightful to see your perspective and insight on all these topics.

So thank you

conscion··on Google to lay off 10k “poor performers”
The biggest problem with these stack rankings is that the variation isn't evenly distributed. Across the entirety of Google engineering half are below average, but they might all be in single division/group/team and you may be destroying extremely productive teams by forcing them to cut bottom performers.
conscion··on AI found a bug in my code
How do you use copilot to make suggestions about refactoring existing code?

My understanding was you just give copilot stubs of code and it auto-completes.

conscion··on SpaceX is now building a Raptor engine a day, NASA says
Musk's goal is that "the factory is the product" [0]. He's always focused on production efficiencies. This was brought up in the Tesla bot presentation also where they're trying to reduce the number of unique parts.

conscion··on Ask HN: Where do you escape for non-clickbait thoughtful/informational content?
Wikipedia. They have both pages on current events [0] and events from the past year [1]. The year page also has sub-pages for specific topics or counties. So if you're only interested in events from the USA, you can look at only that page. [2]. Wikipedia also has the benefit of being written in the style of an Encyclopedia, so editorializing is kept to a minimum (at least, that's the goal).

conscion··on The collapse of cryptokitties, the first big blockchain game
This is only half true. From Wikipedia [1], the name did originally stand for Magic The Gathering Online eXchange, but the domain was only used for that purpose for a couple months in 2007.

When it launched as a Bitcoin exchange in 2010, the unused domain was "Mt. Gox" from the beginning.

conscion··on Spain will introduce free train travel
They're implying that the trains would be filled with homeless people.
conscion··on Twitter Sues Elon Musk
> but Elon just refuses to pay, what happens? ... It's going to be pretty hard for a court to enforce getting financing, and getting the merger through.

This wouldn't be hard. It's not like Musk is sitting on a big pile of dollar bills that he can keep the court from grabbing. All of Musk's assets are at banks, and banks are very happy to follow a court order.

conscion··on Many single Japanese people in their 20s have never been on a date – survey
My pet theory is that people don't spend much time around babies and young children when they're growing up so have less comfort around the idea of themselves being parents. This tracks with the "wealthier" pattern also because as people become wealthier, they're able to become more socially isolated.

My guess is that in pre-modern times, a lot of child care would happen by various neighbors so everyone would have some experience being around small kids. Now childcare is largely a business where specific people spend everyday, all day caring for kids (daycare, pre-K, kindergarten, etc).

conscion··on Ask HN: What Happened to Evernote?
Notion has export function that allows exporting your entire workspace to Markdown, HTML, or PDF. I do it once a month so that. (It'd be really nice though if Notion had an automated solution to back up to Google Drive, etc.)
conscion··on Americans' Trust in Media Dips to Second Lowest on Record
Recently I've been using Wikipedia as my news source. They have both a current events page [1] and a page summarizing this year's events [2]. I feel like Wikipedia's goal of being an encyclopedia forces out a lot of editorializing. Wikipedia also has the benefit of every article has the in-line links to context through other Wikipedia pages. It also has given me the opportunity to read about news stories that have fallen out of the public eye even though their "story" is still progressing (like the Ever Given blocking the Suez).

To make the articles more readable. I changed my link styling to more closely match the text styling, which can be done directly through the Wikipedia user account (using the "common.css" page).

conscion··on Notion Acquires Automate.io
For me, it's two things.

The first is the keyboard shortcuts. The forward-slash shortcut for adding blocks is both simple and powerful. Along with AutoHotKey, I'm able to format and navigate around without ever leaving the keyboard.

The second is the block based system. With the block system, it's really easy to reformat a page or move items to new pages. For example, if there's a bulleted list that needs to be moved, I can just grab the top node and move the whole thing at once (because the other nodes are nested blocks)
