conover··on Ask HN: How can I get better at explaining things?
Teaching: EDGE method. Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Evaluate.

Colleagues/leadership/etc, practice writing narrative. It really depends on the audience, but writing down your thoughts brings unparalleled clarity.

conover··on SpaceX Has Launched Starlink's First Direct-to-Smartphone Satellites
The sound aspect of the simulation of reality is going to take up a lot more cycles if we’re going to be hearing every tree that falls in the forest…
conover··on U.S. Provided Canada with Intelligence on Killing of Sikh Leader
Saudi Arabia “got away with it” with Khashoggi. Realpolitik will prevail in the end I think.
conover··on Engineers Need to Write
No one I know associates writing code with writing narrative. I would assume you write books if you told me you are a writer.
conover··on Show HN: I built an extension for analyzing rental properties in Zillow
Are you referring to the commercial paper market? Because that’s more of an overnight thing.
conover··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)

conover··on Klong: a Simple Array Language
APL (and I assume J) uses a large range of special graphic symbols as part of its syntax, which can be difficult to internalize for folks coming from other languages. It can be easily construed as mysterious or magical lettering (arcane rune). My favorite video to illustrate this is Conway's Game of Life written in APL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9xAKttWgP4
conover··on Justin.tv's Live Video Broadcasting Architecture (2010)
“+ React front” to say the least! Hope you are well, glacials.
conover··on Which programming language is used for making Windows 10?
This is a fantastic book. Software is written and rewritten over thousands of years, layer upon layer, powering interstellar vessels and their “automation”. It makes you wonder what Windows will look like 100 years from now, if it’s still around. Will it be easier to just write another layer on top or dig down into the original source and modify?

Constructive murder is also known as felony murder in the US: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felony_murder_rule. It can lead to some seemingly strange outcomes:

“For example, 20-year-old Florida resident Ryan Holle was convicted of first-degree murder for lending his car to a friend, who used the car in a burglary during which a murder was committed.”

conover··on U.S. Accuses Huawei of Stealing Trade Secrets, Defrauding Banks
I noticed that as well. I am super curious about how they obtained that information. I assume it will come out at trial, if it gets that far.

Wire fraud is really serious. It looks like the government intends on going the full distance in this case.

conover··on Every new web app at PayPal starts with TypeScript
We use both at Twitch, on a codebase approaching 7-digit lines of non-generated code. It’s worked out well for us.
conover··on Silicon Valley is evolving and focusing on employees
Completely agree. This reminds of the scene from Moneyball where trading players is discussed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTjhHrcyiQI.
conover··on When Zuckerberg Asserted Control, Instagram’s Founders Chafed
Yeah. It’s a slightly modified transcript of a conversation from the movie Training Day.
conover··on TypeScript at Google
The codebase powering www.twitch.tv utilizes TypeScript and I can’t imagine working on a project of any significant size without leveraging it going forward.
conover··on Making Radio Chips for Hell
Hmmm. Fine in Firefox (59.0.2) for me.
conover··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
I agree with this sentiment. We offer candidates a choice of initial step before an onsite interview:

- A short phone interview using a collaborative editing tool like CoderPad.

- An example project they can complete independently and turn in. We've designed this project to take about 2 hours to complete.

Almost universally, candidates choose the "take home" project option.

“God is already famous, but that doesn’t stop the preacher from ringing the church bells every morning.”

Great quote.

conover··on Announcing GitHub Desktop Beta
I've never used Github Desktop but SourceTree has its own set of glaring problems from interface to functionality. I stick with the command line these days.

conover··on How can I protect myself from government snoopers?
Speaking of "wrong call" -- this reminds me of the poor folks stuck on the "no-fly" and "selectee" lists by accident:

conover··on What I Wish I Had Known Before Scaling Uber [video]
I'll take gross generalizations for $500, Alex.
conover··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Yes. It is not difficult. There are typings files floating around. When you need to use something that's not in the typings file, spend 2 minutes updating it and keep going. Not a big deal at all.
