comprambler··on Xenia: Xbox 360 Emulator (2022)
Moving parts (other than RRoD) are the major reason for failure. HDs are among the worst offenders. The PS3 has a full SATA compatible drive slot and easy data transfer instructions. Designed to be owner accessible. Mine has a SSD now. Not so much on the 360 part, and my Jasper’s (hw rev) hard drive is not sounding great. There are utils for emulating the insane drive ID and custom boot block but why am I required to jump through such hoops.

re:1) If a child in highschool (16) is experimenting with a elementary/middleschooler (12/13), there is a problem. The groupings of children in educational institutions is not abstract. So yes this is pedophilia.

re:2) The assumption that they can’t give consent is due to the inherent power imbalance in their “relationship”.

This is exactly what hurricanes do, and a lesser extent cumulonimbus clouds, starting from an atmospheric imbalance to eventually venting tropospheric heat to the upper atmosphere.

comprambler··on In neutron stars, astrophysicists see a form of matter like none other
Good thought experiment. I wonder if pulsars similarly arise from that regular cycle of blackhole formation on a bit larger scale. I would expect some physical expansion and contraction to correlate.

As for the fabric/whitehole idea, I am in that camp if wormholes are a provably a thing, than hawking radiation over cosmic timescales could cause the eventual death of the singularity. Though if wormholes are provably a thing, then whiteholes would just be the other end. I wonder the black hole object fully evaporates or are there chunks of ancient black holes just floating around.

comprambler··on StarFighter 16 inch: 4K Coreboot/Ryzen Linux laptop
Just to pile on here, the 2019-2021 refresh Intel Macbook Pro 13 and 16 have laptop speakers that rival good portable bluetooth speakers complete with shockingly deep bass, clear midrange and defined treble. They are by far and away the best laptop speakers I've heard. Nice decently powered headphone jack as well.

comprambler··on In the 80s I could call for free by dialing 111: never understood who paid
No, there was no dedicated signalling pipeline between the exchange and the payphone. This was widely exploited with the 2600hz noise that the old phreak boxes used to generate and thus have free calling.

comprambler··on Never used a VPN before, is there a good one to use?
Incorrect, a VPN connection establishes a point to point connection to another computer. Whether that computer has an unfettered connection to the “next hop” or not is not known to you. SOC report may provide the network info? They may be selling data about the websites you visit to 3rd parties.

It boils down to who do you trust more, your ISP or your chosen VPN provider. In places where there are ISP data laws, you likely (dependent on VPN provider) have a more private connection. Conversely, if your ISP injects ads through other pages and intercepts your dns calls to provide you advertising, a well researched VPN solution might be a good choice.

Also this reads like an ad.

comprambler··on Ask HN: Recommend me a good set of 2.1 desktop speakers?
Another point on the N22, I've gone through all the nicest class D/T amps (topping, dayton One) and they sound faaar too bright and tinny. The N22 is a classic AB amp in a compact size and sounds great.
comprambler··on Ask HN: Recommend me a good set of 2.1 desktop speakers?
N22 and S8 owner here, I chose to use my own passive bookshelves, but it all sounds incredible.
comprambler··on Raspberry Pi shortage drives Enthusiasts to turn to used thin-client PCs
There are "desktop PCs" that use laptop parts which could be a good substitution if as other people have mentioned, you don't need GPIO. Very small, low power usage, swappable SATA/M.2 (if new enough) and SODIMMS, and mobile CPU bins (run cool). Some even come with serial!

comprambler··on “I was an intern at SpaceX years ago”
The cult of personality is based around his ability to turn “nothing” into gold, lets break this down.

Tesla - Took an already well engineered Lotus chassis and electrified it. There were plenty of companies around that did the same thing, he just had the PR abilities to elevate it to the next step. As for the next step, look up the Henry Fisker/Tesla lawsuits regarding the design of the Model S.

Space-X - Purchased some of the admittedly best engineered rocket engines to come out of the Soviet Union, the RD-180. It was a surplus closed cycle combustion (efficient) left over from the Energia/Buran program. They then reverse engineered it, and built a small single bell model. This fact seems to have been scrubbed from the internet. This was all to win the Ansari X Prize. Then he tries to revise his own history by selling a bullshit ICBM story.

If memory serves this was on a PBS Nova doc around the xprize. There is a specific scene where Elon walks by his newly purchased russian engines. Now he has the gall to use US protectionist laws to block ULA from doing the same thing?!!!!

I was an admitted member of the Elon cult until I saw him for who he is. Spoiled entitled snake oil salesman manchild.

The contributions of 10000s of employees in Spacex and Tesla are what make those companies great.

Nice to see someone lauding the Timex Datalink (the 851), which IMO is the best smartwatch ever made. I would pay modern smartwatch money for a proper re-release. The original software still works perfectly on W10.

In chatting with someone in the oil industry, he said humanity was undergoing its largest accidental geo-engineering exercise via sulphur containing heavy oil being burnt on ships. Somewhat recently high sulphur content was banned from heavy oil and we stopped that experiment.
