column··on Ask HN: What are you reading these days?
Most dedicated KGB agent ever. Spent 20 years in prison while maintaining his cover story. Kind of unreal his true identity was not uncovered until after his release.
column··on GPTs: Custom versions of ChatGPT
More whining...
column··on GPTs: Custom versions of ChatGPT
What is even more annoying is every plus subscriber whining that they didn't get the feature yet. We know, you paid and you want to play now, but it's a rollout and it's progressively coming towards you. Just have a little bit of patience.
column··on Imgz: The image host where you are not the product, or even the customer
Genuine answer: I thought I had to point out where the insults were and what I was talking about instead of being vague. If I had written "you are insulting your customers on your pricing page", someone would have been bitching about not quoting the insult.
column··on Telling GPT-4 you're scared or under pressure improves performance
> "Have you tried asking ChatGPT?"

I am so sick of that "joke" already, and it feels like it is there to stay just like we had "just ask Google" for the last 25 years. It is so unimaginative.

column··on Talk-Llama
long memory/context, easily talk to your docs, define personas, works with gpt4 out-of-the-box but also supports local LLMs... and it comes with a CLI chat app
column··on Talk-Llama
why use this instead of "memgpt run" ?
column··on Ask HN: What companies have blown you away with their customer support?
Exactly
column··on Imgz: The image host where you are not the product, or even the customer
Word of advice: there is a middle ground between corporate speech and snarky comments. Your pricing is surprisingly snarky. You do you, but I won't pay if I don't feel considered. You are insulting your customers as "cheap ass" for getting the base package, this could easily be avoided.
column··on .io considered harmful
what about .me ?
column··on Ask HN: What companies have blown you away with their customer support?
Digitec/Galaxus, a Swiss company in the likes of Amazon. Not only they offer customer support with native speakers (French/German/Italian/English), their return policy is top notch. They are not the cheapest, but they have outstanding support.
column··on Ask HN: What companies have blown you away with their customer support?
> How on earth did a public service get it so right, and a public company so wrong?

Maybe it's because they are not so tighly constrained to a target number of callers to answer to?

column··on KDE 6 Wallpaper Competition Open Until Nov.14
"The wallpaper must be original, created specifically for this contest, and released under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. Therefore no submissions using AI art will be accepted."

Fine KDE, be ignorant while lamenting for decades about Fear Uncertainty Doubt tactics by proprietary vendors.

column··on Extracting Hacker News book recommendations with the ChatGPT API
Thanks, it's actually quite instructive.
column··on Extracting Hacker News book recommendations with the ChatGPT API
So.. what was the prompt? You talk about your results and they are valuable, but the prompt would be great
column··on Tell HN: Please stop sending AI-generated job applications (whoishiring threads)
They're a dead giveaway because they usually lack any personal touch or deep understanding of the job role. It's like they're ticking off a checklist of generic qualifications without understanding the company culture. You start to recognize the pattern after you've gone through a few hiring cycles.

(Took a few attempts, but eventually got an AI response that followed the guidelines—no question repetition and in the style of a HackerNews comment. Pretty neat. ((This too was AI generated)))

column··on Tell HN: Please stop sending AI-generated job applications (whoishiring threads)
You know what? I applaud your brevity. Now all you have to do for future job postings is mention "Please do not submit cover letters that are generated by AI. Doing so will result in immediate disqualification.".
column··on Raspberry Pi 5
The value proposition is there for me. I bought a "BMAX B1 Plus" for about 70$ including shipping from AliExpress. It's as small as 2 or 3 CD cases stacked together. It is a fully fledged PC that comes with windows 10 (no support for windows 11 but LinuxMint and other distro work well too), an hdmi cable, and a clever mounting bracket to attach it to the back of a monitor. It is passively cooled, pulls about 4 Watts. Biggest downside is the power supply with a cylindar connector. I use it solely to connect to my main PC using RustDesk and it is great for that.
column··on Raspberry Pi 5
What killed my interest in the Pi 4 was the need for a rather loud fan. Anybody got a solution for a quiet/silent Pi ?
column··on GitHubGuessr
Honestly way too hard for me to be enjoyable. I really love the peak at the code concept, but I'm unfamiliar with most/all of the projects listed.. I would love a simplified version with less choice..
column··on Show HN: HackYourNews – AI summaries of the top HN stories
I wish the word "hack" wasn't in the url... Blocked by corporate proxy.
column··on Youtube2Webpage: Create Websites with Text from Videos
You can absolutely already do what you describe with GPT-4 plugins (Plus membership required). Using VoxScript and Video Insight :

column··on Career Advice Nobody Gave Me: Never Ignore a Recruiter (2022)
You totally can know up-front. My colleague's Linkedin bio clearly states "Not interested in contract work.", once in a blue moon he'll get a recruiter that actually read his profile!
column··on NASA's New Website Is in Beta
it looks like very much like one of the templates of Mendinx.com : https://new.mendix.com/link/templates/108938

I am not saying it's the same, just funny how similar they are to the "Mendix Aerospace" template that came before this beta.

column··on You need 27 tickets to guarantee a win on the UK National Lottery
On this theme, I really enjoyed the movie "Jerry and Marge go large" with Bryan Cranston. Based on a true story!
column··on EurKEY: The European Keyboard Layout – For Europeans, Coders and Translators
CH layout for the win

column··on LeMUR: LLMs for Audio and Speech
Do you use Whisper for the transcript (which version? base?) and GPT-3.5-turbo for the language model? Do you provide a self-hosted solution for the companies that don't want their meetings going "on the cloud"? I do not mean to be dismissive of all your work, I know too well the devil is in the details, but what are the key advantages of using your solution over having a Python dev (or GPT-4) write a similar tool using Langchain + whisper + llama2 for example? Again, please do not take this as a cheap shot, I might not be the target audience but if I were to use such a tool I would like everything to run locally because of privacy/corporate spying concerns. Thanks!

EDIT: Also it is unclear if you support other languages than English. Whisper does, so in theory you should. There are companies out there where English is not the work language.
