colechristensen··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I didn't realize it was published under two separate english translated titles
colechristensen··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
>Another piece of evidence on the pile that the sudden panic and desire to "slow down" is because they're hitting the plateau on capability

I think it's more a token-cost-demand plateau. They've reached the scale and investor trillions to which they can't 10x the hardware cost of inference any more. They can't afford to compete by eating costs and there isn't appetite for more expensive inference.

So in order that they don't bankrupt each other they're looking for the legal cartel behavior coordinating a stop to growth by convincing governments to regulate them into stopping.

There's a lot of juice to squeeze in efficiency but only so much whereas it seemed like capability was going to continue to scale with parameter count.

Maybe it's good news for everyone that model capability is now going to scale on semiconductor cost meaning huge players are going to be very motivated to make semiconductors cheap.

Yes, the world powers didn't give away sovereignty to a foreign court while countries without a place on that list did.
colechristensen··on Using any C++ library in Godot
I'm a big fan of the godot rust bindings as well
colechristensen··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
Sound quality speaking directly into the mic and potentially better ability to filter environmental noise.
colechristensen··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Over and over I'm seeing markets collapse for products that gradually got more expensive over decades and then folks on the sell side surprised when the market is gone rather than just capped at some price.

Commercial real estate is the same, it got so expensive with such a bad experience for people using it that folks discovered they don't need it.

You can't have a market for alcoholic beverages when the default cost is 2 or more hours of minimum wage work.

colechristensen··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
Comparing the genetic engineering of this rose to curing cancer is about the same as comparing making a sandwich to running an international restaurant chain.

colechristensen··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
dang: can we change the link to an article not written by someone with an aggressively anti-hacker attitude?

colechristensen··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
One crab chair, please!
colechristensen··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
>It seems like there would be some advantage to some creatures of not aging, or having individuals who have significant longer life spans.

There is, if there were no advantage a whole lot more species would die immediately after reproduction like the octopus.

Many simpler organisms are vaguely immortal.

>It's easy to imagine a world where nature might want to keep the alpha lion around longer than the others so it can have more offspring, for example.

The utility of genetic diversity puts a lot of pressure against this.

colechristensen··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
And onions are mildly toxic to cats and dogs. There is a lot less shared responses as to what is toxic or edible across species.

Basically every flavor compound in an herb or spice we eat is a poison directed at insects, microbes, or other creatures. (much less every medicinal or psychoactive compound found in nature)

colechristensen··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
Excessively large doses make your stomach and perhaps your kidneys unhappy and supplements being lightly regulated there may be purity issues where the risk is what else is in it.

But it's pretty safe at recommended doses.

colechristensen··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
When a person says something is pointless they either mean there was actually no significant intent behind it OR a judgement that the intent/plan/achievability behind whatever point there is, is of such low quality that there might as well not have been any intent behind it at all.

Trying to keep yourself dry with a newspaper over your head in a hurricane: pointless.

colechristensen··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
We need to work on a common understanding of the word "pointless".

>“We” don’t have any power.

<Ned Flanders' father>: We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!

People who say this have never tried, do nothing themselves to contribute to improving the problem or to convince others or the government to improve the problem besides perhaps complaining on the internet in a bubble of likeminded people who don't need their minds changed.

colechristensen··on Saving another 100TB of RAM
During the Moore's Law years you didn't have to optimize much, if you did a significant release yearly computer hardware grew faster than your optimization problems.
colechristensen··on You can run Git on object storage if you re-make packfiles
I reimplemented git in elixir with additional backends, it's working in production for my own git code forge but definitely has some rough edges.

colechristensen··on I refuse to let SPICE die
It's possible and I have a very early E2E test. A modification of the sunshine backend itself to be able to connect to qemu. In the future it's definitely possible to have this directly in qemu but it would require reimplementing the whole sunshine protocol

Follow along https://anvil.fangorn.io/fangorn/sunshine-qemu and https://blog.fangorn.io (there isn't anything here yet)

colechristensen··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Hm. That's a situational rule. In this case it makes it funnier. A person could write a whole encyclopedia of lore tracing Kallax back to its mythical roots.
colechristensen··on I refuse to let SPICE die
This is a great idea and perhaps not all that hard. I'm getting started on it.
colechristensen··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
My dislike for brand crossovers is inversely correlated with how reasonable a match the brands are.

Ikea vs. The Sims? Lame, obvious

Ikea vs. Skyrim? 10/10 no notes

colechristensen··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Honestly I like Chex Quest more than Doom.

It would be hilarious if they made more of them. Chex: Eternal, Chex: Age of Breakfast

Play it! https://dos.zone/chex-quest-1996/

colechristensen··on HuggingFace: Security.txt
I've found the strongest signal that someone has no opinions of value is a loud attempt to denigrate something based on the name.

Maybe it's part of the success formula for startups, silly names cause shallow self-important customers and employees to self-select themselves out of a growing companies orbit. Such trivialities are poison. People and companies who make a lot of effort to make themselves seem serious and important very often have nothing of substance about them.

colechristensen··on Show HN: Godot and Rust based multiplexer (terminal panes and more)
I've done a lot of things reusing/modifying the internals of alacritty [1] to put terminals in things. TeX in the terminal [2], a terminal in minecraft [3], Alacritty in Godot [4], and not pictured, alacritty in a swift plugin for macos/ios/ipados all at various levels of completion.

colechristensen··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I had this terribly rocky relationship with a woman and years later she'd gotten a career in tech and apologized saying she now understood my box of cables. That was about the only apology of hers I ever really believed.
