coffee_beqn··on Why DALL-E will not steal my job as an illustrator
Yeah a lot of these articles are basically “it couldn’t read my mind so it’s bad”. I’ve employed a few artists before and the workflow is quite similar to the version 0.1 we’re dealing with for AI art now.

Explain your concept and then get 1 out of 10 illustrations kind of in the right direction, start iterating on that for a few generations and so on.

coffee_beqn··on D.C.-area startup wants to solve the public bathroom problem
> For example, people experiencing persistent mental health issues would literally be locked up "for the common good".

I don’t know that we’re doing much better now. Is it so great that now the same people spend a few decades self-medicating and living like rats on the streets because they can’t escape their inner demons without extremely intense intervention?

Do people really look at a person having a violent psychotic breakdown for the 10th time this year in the street and pat society on the back that at least he’s not in a mental institution..

coffee_beqn··on Finnish as a world language?
Finlandssvenska is a strong identity that stands on its own. Kind of like Quebec. Definitely they don’t hold any fealty to Sweden
coffee_beqn··on Finnish as a world language?
A competition like Spelling Bee basically makes no sense in Finnish. As long as you know the alphabet you can spell any word you hear
coffee_beqn··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
What is the PaaS people use today? Just big cloud is too powerful or are there still niche companies that make life easy for startups like Heroku used to?
coffee_beqn··on Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become
Let’s see.. work, work, work, work, work.
coffee_beqn··on Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become
Local maxima
coffee_beqn··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
I don’t believe that can happen. The steam deck kind of works because they pack in a bunch of peripherals that won’t fit into a phone. The touchscreen experience on it is miserable. 99% of steam games with touchscreen controls would be totally a sad experience.

What it is is a laptop in a funny case.

coffee_beqn··on A new vertical farm will grow 3M pounds of mycelium a year for fungi-based bacon
It’s also really hard for most people to think of what to cook at the end of a long day. Meatballs and potatoes is the first thing that pops to my head and turning that into brussel sprouts and potatoes sounds unappetizing but impossible meatballs and potatoes is quite close especially if I add a sauce. I guess that’s the cultural imprint.

I do also care about the animals and the environmental impact and it’s just extremely naive to think that a large part of humanity would switch from meat-based diets to tofu and steamed veggies. People are lazy and like tasty easy things.

coffee_beqn··on A new vertical farm will grow 3M pounds of mycelium a year for fungi-based bacon
In my experience the flavor is not especially close to a real smoking - which is a cooking/preservation technique - not just a flavoring.
coffee_beqn··on A new vertical farm will grow 3M pounds of mycelium a year for fungi-based bacon
Most fake meats I eat like impossible have macros very close to real meat. And for the junkier cuts like nuggets often slightly better. They are salty though so I try to avoid adding extra salt to other parts of the dish
coffee_beqn··on Why does everything on Netflix look like that?
I have no clue about what these professional cameras or industry names for shots mean so I guess this article is not for me.

I guess that would take effort though while a rant can be typed out in an hour

coffee_beqn··on Euro falls below parity with the dollar
Ukraine is also not in the EU.
coffee_beqn··on Vietnam to make Apple Watch and MacBook
I hadn’t heard of it. What a terrible plan.
coffee_beqn··on Vietnam to make Apple Watch and MacBook
Vietnam is the most proven country at defeating a super power militarily.

Don’t forget Foxconn itself is Taiwanese
coffee_beqn··on Adventure game graphics with DALL-E 2
You’ll definitely need to nap the walkable areas and even worse split the image into layers so you can walk behind/between things.
coffee_beqn··on The AI Art Apocalypse
Ah I kind of want to see the alien horror of AIs teaching each other what art is for multiple generations
coffee_beqn··on The AI Art Apocalypse
I don’t think that’s true though. There’s no reason you can’t prompt an AI to make an image that makes people feel things. One of the very first things I tried was “Mt rainier by Monet” and it certainly made me feel quite serene just like any human made nature art
coffee_beqn··on The AI Art Apocalypse
But for people like me I can never get what’s in my head out on paper. So is this better then me trying to explain to a third party what I want and then checking in a few days later if they got it? I think it very easily could be
coffee_beqn··on The AI Art Apocalypse
I’m super excited about these new tools as a (sometimes) indie game developer. Now I can iterate and get good game graphics like portraits and load screens and backgrounds with a much easier immediate workflow. I’m sure there will be a 3D model generating AI not too long from now. Those are purely mathematic objects (graphs) so Id imagine it’s feasible. I’d much rather spend my time coming up with a prompt to generate characters and environments. I gave up on my last project after modeling a animal for three days and not being happy with it.

That is pretty powerful. I didn’t realize we had so many tools already that something like this looks.. easy?

coffee_beqn··on Desktop CPU Sales Lowest in 30 Years, AMD Gains Market Share Anyway
Everyone’s waiting for the AM5 switch. No point in buying a soon obsolete platform unless you really have to.
coffee_beqn··on From Oscilloscope to Wireshark: A UDP Story
I wanted to do EE but the jobs are just completely different league. Hard to compete against the “best employability” of.. pretty much any profession.

One startup I was at had a important hardware component and it was a delight to work with electrical engineers

coffee_beqn··on Is this the end of social networking?
Like Reddit but with more geographic subdivision. I wouldn’t be too surprised if that was big one day
coffee_beqn··on Is this the end of social networking?
Ugh I do still remember the chronological feed where posts didn’t get ranked. I enjoyed that product. Feels like every efficiency improvement they did removed a few percentage of users until now when there’s just a few weirdos left posting
coffee_beqn··on Is this the end of social networking?
I guess it’s not a new idea but it is a more potent version of the same. DFW himself had a serious TV addiction which is where that idea comes from.
coffee_beqn··on Justin Kan: Web3 games don’t need to lure players with profit
It’s annoying how many people talk about “web3” like it will inevitably become just as popular as the internet is today. The internet is the ultimate outlier. Web3 might just as easily end up as a Tamagotchi or Virtual Boy or Adventure Game or Zip drive or Kazaa or MySpace or Google+ or iPod or LAN party or Google Glass or.. you get the idea. Just because you like a technology and are invested in it doesn’t mean it’ll become bigger than sliced bread.
