coffee_beqn··on Stable Diffusion based image compression
And how much compute time/power does “decompressing” take compared to a jpg?
coffee_beqn··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
Besides I think they’d be more well rounded working a well paying trade for example than going tens to hundreds of thousands in debt hanging out in echo chambers and coming out with no marketable skills.
coffee_beqn··on Gen Z never learned to read cursive
Cursive is optimized for fountain pens I believe. As long as we have pencils and ballpoint pens, using cursive is just a holdover from olden times with no actual pros compared to simpler writing methods
coffee_beqn··on Gen Z never learned to read cursive
I do wonder is cursive really that hard to read without any lessons? It’s still English just with a awkward font. Writing cursive has a lot of rules but I would think most GenZers could read the constitution albeit slowly
coffee_beqn··on Wegmans ends self-checkout app after too much shoplifting
I mean the store is making you do their very low paid tedious job for free on an inferior machine. It’s not exactly a barrel of laughs.

I usually self checkout but I have an issue at least 70% of the time

coffee_beqn··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
Also go work somewhere close to your standards. From experience I can tell you that this is a battle you can’t win in a reasonable time table. There’s a reason it is the way it is and you can’t change those people.
coffee_beqn··on Welcome to Your Airbnb, the Cleaning Fees Are $143 and You’ll Still Have
I thought we were over this in like June 2020. Do they still have that policy? Trust the science!
coffee_beqn··on GPU mining no longer profitable after Ethereum merge
I mined for a few weeks out of curiosity and I figured it would work as a heater downstairs since it was winter. I would think that the best move was to sell your GPU about a month before it all ends since the actual mining doesn’t make enough money to offset the resale value plummet.
coffee_beqn··on GPU mining no longer profitable after Ethereum merge
Finally we beat inflation
coffee_beqn··on Ask HN: Why do I have to call for cancellation?
I had that a few years ago on those scummy up sell warranty plans they trick you into buying at car dealerships. I had to fax a signed cancellation form. Thankfully there are Web services that allow you to send pdfs but it was obnoxious.
coffee_beqn··on Ask HN: Have tech salaries been stagnant for the past decade?
True but you also get more “free” services for your tax payments - especially if you have kids.
coffee_beqn··on A method to promote sleep in crying infants using the transport response [pdf]
None of my kids would ever even take a pacifier. There are so many different babies that there is certainly no one true method.
coffee_beqn··on Google employees alarmed that the company suddenly expects them to do work
If they lowered their hiring bar I’d be happy to do Jack shit all day too
coffee_beqn··on What makes a senior engineer? Writing software vs. building systems
It’s also dumb since I’ve had that title for almost 10 years now but I’m easily 3-5x better at my job than when I initially got it. I do get paid more which is nice and work at a better company. I still mainly like to code and system design so I’m not planning on becoming a professional meeting-goer.
coffee_beqn··on Choosing happiness
There’s a baseline of material that can be quite high before you get diminishing returns. Moving to a nicer neighborhood or a bigger place instead of having a 3 person household in a studio apartment where you get stabbed on your way in etc. Eating healthy and well made food instead of cheap hot dogs and macaroni every night.. being able to get a level of medical care that puts your mind at ease and prevents long term issues. Having the financial freedom to take extended time off your work and go somewhere enjoyable.

These all have very real effects on your stress, well-being and happiness in the short and long term.

coffee_beqn··on Bank tells customers to disable updates and not upgrade to iOS 16
At least you get a crappy android now. Not too long ago they were peddling gold encrusted dumbphones as some kind of a tasteless luxury item

Edit: they still have those too https://www.vertu.com/products/signature-v-black-gold-diamon...

coffee_beqn··on Flat-to-curved screens have an identity crisis
I believe some driving sims support extra wide field of view so that you see the sides of the car interior. I’ve seen that with a multi monitor “curved” set up but I’m not sure if a true curved monitor is curved enough for that illusion. Mine is pretty subtle, maybe 15-20 degrees total
coffee_beqn··on IRS will look into setting up a free e-filing system
Because they like money ?
coffee_beqn··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
That would be my main worry that it starts splintering off too much. Maybe they’ll merge or kill off some of the storylines. The hobbit and the elf outpost seem like plot devices that might go away to keep it a bit more focused.
coffee_beqn··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
I seriously missed some weird angry mob. I watched the first two episodes yesterday out of curiosity and it was the most compelling TV show I’ve seen in years. I’ve read the books a long time ago and enjoy fantasy. I thought this was a great start for a fantasy series.
coffee_beqn··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
I mean it’s a fantasy show. They wanted to show that Galadriel was a elite fighter and they succeeded
coffee_beqn··on Nokia’s Burning Platform Memo (2011)
Linux and Nokia were at one point the Crown Jewels of Finnish tech. One still remains. Would’ve been a match made in heaven but I believe they needed Microsoft’s cash to keep the company running. I remember testing the N900 at their store and was really impressed but I think it was too little too late
coffee_beqn··on Responding to recruiter emails with GPT-3
Make it do the interview loop for me and I’ll pay a few thousand for a license
coffee_beqn··on Snap lays off 20% of employees
Also notice when you search anything in the store you always get a bunch of Sponsored results at the top. This is almost exactly like AdWords for search
coffee_beqn··on Snap lays off 20% of employees
So aliexpress garbage? Wow they must be scared
coffee_beqn··on How the Consumer Computer Is Consuming Computing
The thing is that is just not what most people want out of a computer. Force everyone to use OpenBSD and they’ll still just use the browser and a few consumer apps. They won’t magically care about how computers work or spontaneously set up a programming environment. Those who do buy a real computer (which are cheap! and a click away on Amazon) and go work in tech. Schools also (I hope!) still use PCs to teach technology.

You can get a programming capable computer for free since most people consider a 5 year old computer (with 4-8 cores and 8-16GB RAM) to be ancient useless garbage. You have choices of form factor at $100. Everyone could buy a $70 old office liquidation computer that’s perfectly capable of servicing their emailing and document editing needs. But instead they buy $1200 phones. I think Steve Jobses most powerful idea was that other things should be computing devices too. Computers haven’t gone anywhere. You can buy one at the big grocery stores.

coffee_beqn··on Mikhail Gorbachev has died
Can you imagine having to go to the bathroom in the middle of that horde
coffee_beqn··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
Speed painting also usually involves practicing certain scenes. This method anyone can use to create any new scene that they can imagine and the result looks quite good with some patience. Seems like some people are overly pessimistic but to me this seems like we’re on the cusp of something truly disruptive in the arts space. And it’s not NFTs. Remember that last year this would have sounded mostly like sci-fi unless you were following cutting edge research.

In the realm or “real” art I’m actually very excited since I believe there are hundreds of very imaginative and patient people who just can’t paint well but will be able to create new art with tools like this. It can also synthesize new and alien things.

coffee_beqn··on Why DALL-E will not steal my job as an illustrator
I mean are most commercials or corporate brochures or startup websites “art” in some meaningful way? Not really..

What people are worried about is the death of the professional artist job market, not art as a concept

coffee_beqn··on Why DALL-E will not steal my job as an illustrator
I’m not sure that will work for corporate clients which is what majority of the work is for. Oh great so this red splotch conveys the trustworthiness of Uber to our riders? I’m sure they’ll get it
