coding123··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
That says "expectations index"...

I do not think it means what you think it means.

coding123··on Bluesky's open API means anyone can scrape your data for AI training
There is literally no one that can be pleased anymore.
coding123··on Elon Musk wants to block the transfer of InfoWars' X accounts to The Onion [pdf]
Twitter handles are owned by Twitter, not other entities.

Also the sale was blocked is the last I heard due to improper sale.

coding123··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
Cloud Run and K8S are not in the same space. One is to make the infra generic, Cloud Run ONLY works on GCP.
coding123··on We can mine asteroids for space food
I can't wait for us to start mining asteroids and my bank account has $123,456,789,101,123,500,700!!!!!!

And then use that to buy $80 trillion dollar cheeseburgers at McD's!

coding123··on Scientists are learning why ultra-processed foods are bad
Very true, someone that has time to make a meal from scratch is clearly not stressed, has money and time. Maybe not all, but from a category view, there are so many factors on those two different worlds that affect health, that focusing on just food is crazy.
coding123··on The tech utopia fantasy is over
I can't remember exactly when, but like 8 or so years ago a british guy had a post on HN that questioned all of this and everyone, I mean EVERYONE here basically lambasted him. It was the first time I kinda turned my head and started saying that all this stuff is fake. All these "save the world" job posts, etc.. etc.. it was all bullshit. I think everyone knew that then - but were not willing to admit it outloud.
coding123··on Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt discusses DOJ move to have Google sell off Chrome
No one is going to pay for it anyway, because its..... ALREADY OPEN SOURCE! Why spend 20B when you already have the source!

If the distribution point changes, its no longer popular.

And then what, would google be sued again if they start linking to Chromium's website (after spicing it up - to be more consumer friendly)

It makes literally no sense that a company be punished for internal growth. The FTC/DOJ needs to go after acquisitions that cause unfair advantages, not software that the company created themselves.

I mean can they be a little more creative and go after Google for interviewing THOUSANDS of companies pretending they are interested in an acquisition, and instead just find out all their secrets and then cause them to fold?

coding123··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
It makes it slightly harder to go on vacation, I think a lot of people won't like that.
coding123··on Teslas Are Involved in More Fatal Accidents Than Any Other Brand, Study Finds

coding123··on 'Tech stacks' are out, and 'tech sandwiches' are in
please don't let this new "innovation" in buzzwords get out. its not april first is it?
coding123··on Politics Trump AG pick Matt Gaetz says he's withdrawing
but the guard rails... worked?
coding123··on Musk, Ramaswamy vow 'mass head-count reductions' in U.S. government
Sure, that can happen, but there's still a question: Do we need to have 2.4M employed to distribute those checks?
coding123··on Tron Crypto Founder Spends $6M on a Banana and Says He Plans to Eat It
What's with the banana jokes these days? Payload of starship, this art exhibit.

We're going bananas.

coding123··on Musk, Ramaswamy vow 'mass head-count reductions' in U.S. government
There are 2.4M workers in the US government.

If the country has 258M adults, then 1 in 100 people are "administers" for the other 99. Just seems strange to me.

Elon reduced twitter by 80% and it still runs today. (It had some glitches during the transition, obviously)

Is there a possibility that all bureaucracies are 80% overstaffed?

coding123··on Exploring the Cost and Feasibility of Battery-Electric Ships
You've been sitting at port a week past unloading please move along! Sorry doc command, were still charging, should be on our way in 8 more days.
coding123··on The Northeast is becoming fire country
Not in the news, I have seen it with my own eyes.
coding123··on The Northeast is becoming fire country
This isn't in the news yet, but the VAST majority of fires, like 9/10 in CA in 2024 were arson.

Just a warning if that trend spreads to the NE.

coding123··on Against Best Practices
That doesn't defeat my point- is the smaller/poorer army using best practices?

When all things are the same, the army with more will win.

When all things are not the same, there are little bonuses that can cause the smaller/poorer, malnourished army to win against those with machine guns. Often it's just knowing the territory. Again though, these people are individually making decisions. There isn't some massively smart borg ball sending individual orders to shoot 3 inches to the left to each drone.

coding123··on Against Best Practices
The army that is conquering is carrying best practice weapons, wearing best practice boots, best practice fatigues, best practice tanks, trucks, etc.

They're best practice aiming, shooting, walking, communicating, hiring (mercs), hiding, etc...

The people that are in the weeds are just doing the most simple things for their personal situation as they're taking over that granite rock or "copse of lush oak trees".

It's easy to use a lot of words to pretend your point has meaning, but often, like KH - it doesn't.

coding123··on Ask HN: How do you communicate in a remote startup?
Be honest about people not showing up and say it's not ok. Hours need to mean something. If there is a block of 4-5 hours a day where everyone (that has a dependency on each other) is available, this is key.

Anything less and you'll have people just enjoying a day at the park (without the laptop).

coding123··on Teen behind hundreds of swatting attacks pleads guilty to federal charges
There are at least 30 countries that would apply the death sentence for that.
coding123··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
yes
coding123··on FTC to launch investigation into Microsoft's cloud business
It was supposed to be automatic! Shaker and stirred or whatever.
coding123··on Non-elementary group-by aggregations in Polars vs pandas
I don't know how well the polars implementation works, but what I love about PySpark is that sometimes spark is able to push those groupings down to the database. Not always, but sometimes. However I imagine that many people love polars/pandas performance for transactional queries (from start to finish get me a result in less than a second (as long as the number of underlying rows is not greater than 20k-ish). Pyspark will never be super great for that.
coding123··on Teenage Engineering OP-XY
$2299 or $2 299
coding123··on Upcoming Hardening in PHP
I found the solution:

sudo apt-get purge php.*

coding123··on Please stop the coding challenges
I had one coding challenge a month ago that said: this should take you no longer than 2 hours. It didn't have guard rails on it so you could technically spend more time on it. It ended up taking me 2 days on and off because it was basically build a front and and a backend. And then later I realized the instructions for submission were totally broken too: DONT make a PR - later in the instructions: make a PR.
coding123··on Bill Atkinson has pancreatic cancer
Yes, that popped up quickly, but normally isn't that reserved for after someone has passed away?

edi: Oh, for Thomas Kurtz, another thread

coding123··on Please stop the coding challenges
Whatever happened to looking at a resume and realizing this person can code?

What are references for anyway...
