codefined··on Best Wordle guessing strategy
Interestingly, doing a similar analysis where we bucketed each word into 243 (3^5) buckets based on the possible result, we found "RAISE" as the best word. Source[0]

codefined··on Is the madness ever going to end?
Not a Slack user here. Is the app version _slower_ than the website? I assumed that since Electron is only a little bit more than a Chromium wrapper that they would have identical performance.
codefined··on Show HN: Overpass – a self-hosted video live streaming app
Most important thing for me is the latency of the streaming solution. Discord seem to do really well here, with <1 second latency times. You done any measurements with your solution to suggest how much latency there is between the server and the client?
codefined··on Show HN: Caffeine – Minimum viable back end for prototyping
Hah! I'm not sure my MVP has ever had error handling beyond "Something went wrong.". That's something for a real production app, not the minimum possible product.
codefined··on I'm unsure of the security of simultaneous multithreading on modern x86 CPUs
I wonder if per-tenant cache structures might become more popular in the future. It isn't unimaginable that different tenants will be running different things anyway, so split caches might still keep a reasonable amount of effectiveness.
codefined··on Ask HN: Anyone Here Using Stenography
Have you tried practicing specifically to improve your typing speed on QWERTY keyboards? I started doing ~10 minutes of typing tests a day using MonkeyType[0] and KeyMash[1] and can now pretty reliably type 200+ WPM.

Lots of people try out Workman / Dvorak / Colemak, but I see very few top typists using custom keyboard layouts. You can definitely.

I think you could use the CacheStorage[0] framework for this, but IIRC it's not got a great size per domain and is limited by a varying amount of 5MB to 100MB depending on browser.

There are non-malicious issues related to prototype pollution. The most recent that comes to mind are packages overwriting each other. How do you handle two enhances that add the same function name? In JavaScript the second overwrites the first, which can cause issues if the functions do different things.
codefined··on Senegal Programming Language
I'm not sure I'm a fan of the 'Enhance' concept[0]. It seems to be similar to prototype Pollution in JavaScript[1] which is generally considered bad practice. I can't tell, is `Enhance` scoped to the current context? Or does it affect all of that type throughout the rest of the program?

Quantum tunnelling has already become a problem in most computer components. NAND flash was the first in maybe 2015 to start reporting seeing issues?

Effects are moderately visible and have to be counteracted at 5nm. I heard some rumours about 7nm, but cannot confirm any countermeasures were taken to avoid quantum effects.

It should be noted that "3nm" is now purely for commercial reasons and has no relationship to the size of transistors on board.

codefined··on Fast Rust Builds
Rust and JS both have a very small standard library. This is what unites them in a 'dependency hell' of having to handle thousands of packages for most projects.

Other languages that don't face this, e.g. Python, have very large standard libraries which already include a dizzying array of features. E.g. take a look at some of the things you get with standard Python[0].

- sqlite3 (DB-API 2.0 interface for SQLite databases)

- bz2 (Support for bzip2 compression)

- sunau (Read and write Sun AU files)

- netrc (netrc file processing)

- curses (terminal handling for character-cell displays)

- mailbox (manipulate mailboxes in various formats)

I found the exact same issue! Here's a .bashrc snippet you can steal to extract from a multitude of files.

It doesn't quite have the number of features your library does and only supports extracting.

codefined··on Malicious PyPI packages stealing credit cards and injecting code
Downloading a Python package (as done by scrapers, mirrors and security analysts) does not run setup.py. Only if the module is installed is this run.

It's analagous to downloading vs. running an executable.

At the moment your karma is -2, I'd perhaps recommend you try to make insightful posts that add to the conversation.

Interesting. Mileage may vary by company / area of work. I didn't go to Uni and went straight to work. Got a few A-levels but nothing special.

Wasn't even asked about them for my first job.

codefined··on Brain-Computer Interface Smashes Previous Record for Typing Speed
I don't know if it's cultural, but as someone of the 'current generation' (Gen Z), I feel that the opposite is true and typing speeds increase as you get younger (to some limit).

I've tried to back this up and only found a single, questionable, data source[0] on the topic but I do attend several typing competitions and some of the young ages are phenomenal. I was beaten a few months ago by a 15 year old who was typing >220wpm+ for 5 minutes.

Definitely slower than something that has a pre-defined stylesheet, e.g. Stylus. Does occassionally cause graphical issues (say, below 0.05% of websites I visit, once a month?) that means I have to toggle it off for that site.

Still use it because the speed / memory different isn't noticeable on most modern laptops / desktops. Even my phone uses it now as it's quick enough with the 'dynamic' update they made (toggle onto it under the 'more' section)

codefined··on Google Announces TPUv4, 2.7x faster on average than TPUv3
Your maths is incorrect, dividing by the number of devices doesn't make sense in this case, you should be multiplying them. E.g.

- 466 minutes of fourth-generation TPU time.

- 1,600 minutes of third-generation TPU time.

Using this logic, fourth generation TPUs are 3.4x better. But, comparing different cluster sizes is pointless. These things don't scale linearly.
