cnorthwood··on The Texas Power Grid Is Hanging on by Its Fingernails
The UK is running at 40% non-hydro renewables right now and we have a very stable grid https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/
cnorthwood··on BBC Sport's Tokyo Olympics studio [video]
I assume it's better value for money than actually building a set on location as they've done for previous Olympics
cnorthwood··on Sustainable web design
The difference between idle and load energy consumption of switches, routers, etc
cnorthwood··on The Push for a “PBS for the Internet”
Yep, it is odd. There's also an entire piece of R&D that the BBC are doing that I know people on called "Public Service Internet" https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/public-service-internet
cnorthwood··on Remote code execution in cdnjs of Cloudflare
It's more to avoid false positives. I've had bug bounty hunters flag secrets in my projects before looking for a bounty, but in actuality it was some random string in a variable named AWS_ACCESS_KEY etc that we used in a unit test (which mocked out the SDK but still expected the config values to exist at init)
cnorthwood··on Condo wreckage hints at less steel in columns than design drawings
In the UK the local council (town hall) only holds the plans relevant to making planning decisions, not the detailed construction plans. Private companies can sign off the building safety (known as building control) usually as part of providing a new build warranty on the development (but then one of the biggest providers, Zurich, offloaded their portfolio to a shell company than then went bankrupt under the liabilities due to incorrectly signing off buildings. The whole situation is a major scandal in the UK at that moment)
cnorthwood··on CaribouLite: Turn any 40-pin Raspberry-Pi into a Tx/Rx 6GHz SDR
It depends on the country you're in. In the UK for example, you're only allowed to listen to broadcast, amateur radio, or transmissions to which you are the intended recipient
cnorthwood··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
Operational ease
cnorthwood··on Do countries get the list of every passenger that's transiting their airspace?
I think it's cultural. We have some brand names where I believe Americans don't, for example. For example, we hoover where Americans vacuum.
cnorthwood··on Tilting Trains and Technological Dead-Ends
few bits in the Thames Valley if I'm walking back from the buffet car or whatever, but the bits they're making faster are the bits through the Lakes and Borders and whenever I've been on the Transpennine 110mph trains I can't say I've found it particularly bad compared to the 100mph ones it replaced. (Not been to Scotland on one of their new 125mph trains yet and I don't know if they'll be authorised to run at full speed)
cnorthwood··on Tilting Trains and Technological Dead-Ends
Pendolino's are still used on the West Coast Mainline connecting London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow and I don't really have a problem with them. They're not going away any time soon, until we have HS2 (brand new route and alignment without the curves that need tilting for 125mph running).

Interestingly, they are increasing the speed on some of the northern bits of WCML through changing the bank of the track more. My understanding is that if the bank was too steep, slower running freight trains had issues with it even if faster running passenger trains were fine. With a general increase in the speed of freight trains, the speed differential is less so a higher bank can be tolerated, and I think there are sections of WCML where non-tilting trains can hit close to the speeds of the Pendolinos.

cnorthwood··on Is Werewolf Killing the Conference Hackfest? (2007)
There are in-person groups in a few cities when gathering was permitted (I play in Manchester). We've moved to https://werewolv.es, which is an online platform and has a good Discord community attached
cnorthwood··on Lyra audio codec enables high-quality voice calls at 3 kbps bitrate
Most landline networks are also digital now for exchange to exchange communications, so even those will be packet based
cnorthwood··on Block Facebook Servers
Facebook managed to get some off-Facebook activity from me even using this. The site in question was also loaded in a Private Browsing window and Facebook claimed it was from pixel tracking. I'm guessing they've inferred it based on IP, especially as I live by myself.

How this is legal under GDPR, given I'm a UK citizen, I'm really not sure.

cnorthwood··on A comprehensive list of UX design methods and deliverables
Co-production is a form of design, no? You design within constraints and it should be happening in tandem with the development of the system so they both feed into one another.
cnorthwood··on Nobody lives here: Nearly 5M Census Blocks with zero population (2014)
If the population is truly zero, I wonder how many other infrastructure concerns will come first? Primarily road connections, but also electric grid and potable water. There are alternatives to the latter 2 but it is a significant impact
cnorthwood··on BrexitImpacts: Companies charging more, or stopping sales because of Brexit
The biggest change is that now the person shipping (or a marketplace if they use it) has to be VAT-registered and pay VAT directly to the government, rather than it be handled by the courier/shipping service who would collect it directly from the recipient before releasing the package to them. I think it's a pretty significant change to how third countries work, especially if they only occasionally ship to the UK.

The EU are adopting the same rules in July, and I'm not sure why we didn't harmonise the introduction date with the EU.

cnorthwood··on 2021 GPS Accuracy Issue Impacting Some Garmin, Suunto, other GPS Devices
I don't think they require it - the data in question allows it to optimise startup otherwise it can take many minutes to successfully acquire enough data to compute your location
cnorthwood··on Do not compare EU salaries with the US
Is that cash, or is a significant amount of that stocks/shares or other non-cash reimbursement (which I assume is subject to tax at the point it's realised)?
cnorthwood··on Do not compare EU salaries with the US
It seems very hard to compare the two figures. I guess the interesting way to compare them would be what's the disposable income you have to spend normalised against purchasing power. So gross salary, less taxes (payroll and any others if applicable), pension contributions, student loan repayments, medical insurance contributions (and other out-of-pocket expenses relating to that you may have to pay in a typical year), and then baseline cost-of-living (rent/mortgage payments), but there are so many variables there it seems very hard to be directly comparable.

All I know is if I earned what I did now (which is an excellent UK salary) in Silicon Valley, I wouldn't be able to afford to live by myself in a two-bedroom flat in a desirable area, which is what I do now. I've no idea how much I would have to earn in SV to have the same quality of life as I do in Manchester, UK. (I figured it out for London and it's approximately a £20k premium due to the rental premium in London)

cnorthwood··on US passes anti-corruption law that effectively bans anonymous shell companies
No, Companies House also requires you to declare "persons with significant control" in the ltd company, which includes the owners. (for example, this is my company https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/c...)
cnorthwood··on Ramstein air base in Germany experiences potential incoming missile scare
although Lithuania is both in the EU and NATO which would make it a very different proposition
cnorthwood··on MicroStrategy's Bitcoin Debt Bet
There are two types of freedoms under liberalism, the "freedom to", and "freedom from". Libertarians are mostly concerned with the former (e.g., minimising laws which stop their ability to do something) whereas modern liberalism takes a more balanced approach (for example, making racial discrimination illegal reduces someone's freedom to be racist whilst improving another groups ability to partake in society without experiencing discrimination)
cnorthwood··on Pfizer-Biontech vaccine data stolen in cyber attack
I don't think it's unreasonable to keep the personal details of trial participants secret, for example
cnorthwood··on Let the Incarcerated Vote
This isn't 100% true. Prisoners serving sentences of less than a year can vote in Scotland
cnorthwood··on Chefs are adapting their menus for chilly outdoor dining
Under UK law it wouldn't be, once the walls exceed 50% of the perimeter it's no longer classed as outdoor
cnorthwood··on GDPR watchdog: tracking and consent popups unlawful
No, GDPR considers collection, sharing and use of personal data to deliver targeted advertising optional. You can still deliver advertising that doesn't use any personal data.
cnorthwood··on Why American cities can’t keep up with infrastructure maintenance (2017)
Many private rail operators in the UK have been allowed to collapse, UK gov has set up "operators of last resort" which are run by the government to take over services when that happens. Pre-pandemic, the East Coast Mainline and Northern operations were run by them after the private operators walked away on the verge of collapsing
cnorthwood··on Boys lag behind: How teachers’ gender biases affect student achievement

cnorthwood··on Ask HN: What should a software engineering Hippocratic Oath equivalent be?
The BCS have a code of ethics for their members (note the BCS goes beyond software development and incorporate roles such as business analysts amongst their members). It's pretty good imo https://www.bcs.org/membership/become-a-member/bcs-code-of-c...
