cloudwalking··on Mass die-off of birds in south-western US 'caused by starvation'
Not at the timescale humans are forcing.
cloudwalking··on macOS unable to open any non-Apple application
I’d suggest using a Mac until it doesn’t actually work. Then you can find a new computer to compromise with.
cloudwalking··on U.S. Accuses Google of Illegally Protecting Monopoly
Honest question, what is anti-competitive about the iPhone deal?
cloudwalking··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
No. The White House Press Office does not need a twitter account. They can issue press releases and hold press conferences, and both will be widely covered by the national media or view on the internet. There is no reason they need to use twitter.
cloudwalking··on Waymo is opening its driverless service to more people in Phoenix
This is simply not true, as evidenced by Waymo driving on roads faster than 25 mph
cloudwalking··on Waymo is opening its driverless service to more people in Phoenix
They won't, though, without HD maps. That's the irony.

Nobody working on (real) SDCs is worried about rain or snow. Yes it's a problem right now, but a clearly solvable one. It hasn't been solved yet because it isn't a high priority.

cloudwalking··on Makani source code released
X is what Google used to be.
cloudwalking··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
When the population collapses, the species will go extinct.
cloudwalking··on People work longer and different hours under lockdown
Yeah, I've gone from 60-90 minutes of podcasts per day to zero.
cloudwalking··on Model S Long Range Plus: Building the First 400-Mile Electric Vehicle
Quite good, in my experience. I would describe it as "seamless." I use it every day (or I did, before lockdown) in my Model 3.
cloudwalking··on Google-backed drones will drop library books to kids in SW Virginia
It's paper.
cloudwalking··on Tesla Q1 2020 Update
Increasing capex for new products.
cloudwalking··on Apple releases new Covid-19 app and website based on CDC guidance
https://www.apple.com/covid19/ doesn't require either of those things.
cloudwalking··on Consider: Email 2.0
I'm quite happy with Gmail... It doesn't have any of the negatives listed above.
cloudwalking··on Ask HN: What do you regret you didn't know when programming for iOS or Android?
IB files are essentially impossible to code review.
cloudwalking··on Mike Bloomberg is plowing millions of dollars into a secretive tech firm
Campaign finance reform.
cloudwalking··on Facebook, Google Drop Out of Top ‘Best Places to Work’ List
Which is why the comparison is pointless.
cloudwalking··on Battery Pack Prices Fall As Market Ramps Up
In some ways they are more "forget about it" than lead acid -- lithium battery life is measured in cycles, rather than time. Your lead acid battery will be dead in 5 years, but your lithium batteries can last for 5,000+ cycles, even more if the cells are intelligently discharged.

As for cold temperatures -- less current can be drawn from each cell. In those cases, you can add more cells to still perform adequately in the cold. And this may even fit in the same form factor as the existing lead acid battery, because lithium batteries are physically smaller.

cloudwalking··on Four fired workers file charges against Google
Contractors are not expected to work after hours. This is a reasonable stance for the company to take.
cloudwalking··on Andrej Karpathy talks about how Tesla's NNs are structured and trained [video]
I know people at both Tesla and Waymo, and Tesla does not pay as well as Waymo.
cloudwalking··on Driverless cars are stuck in a jam
If you have to rent a car to go hiking, you aren't going to hike very often.
cloudwalking··on Driverless cars are stuck in a jam
And then go back to the grocery store every day. What a waste of time. You can also wash your laundry but hand. The reality is we have these appliances (including cars) because they increase our personal efficiency quite a bit.
cloudwalking··on Tesla Model 3 represented over 15% of September new car sales in The Netherlands
Model 3 appears to be the #6 best selling car in USA last quarter* and I don't believe there is much of any USA tax incentive anymore.

cloudwalking··on Tesla’s Summon-Your-Car Feature Spurs U.S. Safety Inquiry
Depends how you define "reduction in revenue." YoY growth in units but reduction in per-unit profit is often a very good sign. See Apple when they introduced the iPod mini. Average sale price went down but number of units continued to increase.
cloudwalking··on Tesla’s Summon-Your-Car Feature Spurs U.S. Safety Inquiry
No I don't think so. Deliveries are still going up and up! Just not quite as high as the TOP end of the Wall st. forecast.
cloudwalking··on Tesla’s Summon-Your-Car Feature Spurs U.S. Safety Inquiry
Damaged growth story? Tesla delivered more cars this quarter than ever before: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/02/tesla-tsla-3q-2019-productio...

Lower ASP is to be expected as people are buying many more (and increasing) Model 3 than Model S/X.

cloudwalking··on Big ISPs aren’t happy about Google’s plans for encrypted DNS
Then buy a phone with expandable storage, that does run Google's operating system. That's the beauty of Google -- don't like their hardware? Buy one of the hundred other models.
cloudwalking··on Big ISPs aren’t happy about Google’s plans for encrypted DNS
Internally, Google employees have quite a large incentive to NOT collect unnecessary data. It's a fundamental tenant. Don't collect any data unless it's for a specific tangible feature that benefits the user.
cloudwalking··on Unexpected cracking found on critical Boeing 737 Next Generation part
I'm usually flying Alaska or United or Southwest, but yes, they do tell you which plane.
cloudwalking··on No, it wasn’t a virus; it was Chrome that stopped Macs from booting
How many Chrome updates have you gotten that did not break your computer? Was your computer broken by this? My understanding is the rollout was stopped fairly quickly.
