clintonb··on Target's EasySweep – Simplifying Skimmer Detection
The solution for cardholders is to use tap-to-pay.

Frankly, as a _credit_ cardholder with zero liability, I’m not overly-concerned by skimmers. I won’t lose anything. The card tax is already baked into all prices, so there’s no real benefit for me to solve this problem.

clintonb··on Calls to investigate tax sites for sharing financial information with Meta
> Yet it's impossible for me see my own prior tax returns from a product I already paid for.

I get what you're saying, but is there a reason you don't download the PDF and store it in your own records?

clintonb··on Apple plans a slow, appointment-only rollout of Vision Pro
No, you don’t. Perhaps those stores were overloaded, but I can easily walk into stores in East Bay and walk out with my products in a few minutes.
clintonb··on Type-safe, K-sortable, globally unique identifier inspired by Stripe IDs
Requirements depend on the use case. I don’t consider the prefix a “leak” and neither does Stripe.
clintonb··on Is ORM still an anti-pattern?
Why bother caching queries that are pretty quick to generate? Most caching around ORMs focuses on caching the results of the query since they require more resources to generate.
clintonb··on Why use OpenID Connect instead of plain OAuth2?
> Can users change their login provider? Some apps allow this but most don’t.

You answered your own question. This is an issue with the app creator not supporting multiple providers, not with OIDC.

clintonb··on Career Progression
The caveat here is that you need to be truly indispensable. This may not always be your piece of the company. As key initiatives change, you either need to change or risk being dispensable. The truth is we are all dispensable at some point.

Your attrition may be regretted, but you can be replaced.

clintonb··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
It all depends on the terms of the equity grant. You may get RSUs, but voting rights are retained by the founders or someone else.
clintonb··on Do any startups still use WordPress after 20 years?
You can learn more about the current system at https://stripe.com/blog/markdoc. It was never WordPress.

You may be over-indexing on “packaging”. It’s been a while since I’ve worked on docs, but much of what you’re calling “packaging” is simply routing to another app.

clintonb··on Do any startups still use WordPress after 20 years?
I worked at Stripe for over five years. It’s a monorepo with multiple services. The marketing site, docs site, and API are separate services.
clintonb··on Do any startups still use WordPress after 20 years?
It’s pretty easy to point <hostname>/docs to an appropriate server. This is literally what Stripe does. There is no need to merge the marketing site with the API or docs.
clintonb··on OpenAPI v4 (aka Moonwalk) Proposal
Yes, but also generate a spec with meaningful operationIds. “getLabels” is much more useful that “529ab782”.
clintonb··on OpenAPI v4 (aka Moonwalk) Proposal
I’m familiar with all that. I worked at Stripe, where I started with a skeleton server first.

My point is, when I work with a framework that generates an OpenAPI spec, I find it faster to generate the spec from a prototype server than to write the spec by hand.

clintonb··on OpenAPI v4 (aka Moonwalk) Proposal
Not sure if I’m an advocate, but definitely a fan. I use frameworks (e.g., Django REST Framework, Nest.js) to build the server and generate my OpenAPI spec. I find it faster than writing YAML/JSON manually, and I end up with a half-working server at the end of it all.
clintonb··on OpenAPI v4 (aka Moonwalk) Proposal
I’m working with a spec that used GUIDs for their operation IDs. This limits TypeScript code generation to typescript-node, which prepends an underscore on the method names. Otherwise, those starting with numbers would be invalid.
clintonb··on IRS tests free e-filing system that could compete with tax prep giants
They know when you don't pay enough, so they have to know what you owe. All of the forms we receive (e.g., W-2, 1099) are transmitted to the IRS. They can use them to determine if a tax payer underpaid.

I know this firsthand because a broker transmitted proceeds without transmitting a cost basis, resulting in a scary letter from the IRS a few months after I filed.

The problem, as I understand it, is that the IRS' technology is very dated, so processing is quite slow, hence the months-long wait between filing and a CP2000 letter.

clintonb··on Mercedes EVs can go faster for $60 a month
I'm pretty sure most folks cannot modify the firmware of the overwhelming majority of devices they own. This isn't much different.
clintonb··on Mercedes EVs can go faster for $60 a month
No middleman was eliminated (at least in the US). Also, the discount would come on the base price, not for an add-on.
clintonb··on Sensenmann: Code Deletion at Scale
The costs at a non-Google level are relatively low, and probably worth ignoring.
clintonb··on Sensenmann: Code Deletion at Scale
They may use Blaze (Bazel) for every language to allow for tracking all dependencies. This helps with reducing the costs of CI by running tests specific to the changed code, and aids code deletion.

Huh!? Why can’t business owners find a solution to increasing collaboration and mentorship? It makes zero sense to involve the government in employee training.

Why do you need a credit card statement for taxes? Business expenses?
clintonb··on Perseus – NextJS alternative in Rust
What problem are you solving with this “unholy combination”? Typescript gives you the relative safety. If you need faster compilation than tsc, you can use swc.
clintonb··on Walmart’s redesigned website looks better than Amazon
Target implements this feature better than many retailers. They show your three most-recently-visited stores. Problems arise, however, if your most-recent visits were during trips out-of-state, and you don't care about the store in Kansas City. No, Target, I don't want to pickup the order 1500 miles away.
clintonb··on Walmart’s redesigned website looks better than Amazon
Walmart continues to fail at helping me find a store. The search field doesn’t use device location, and requires a zip code. I don’t keep track of zip codes when traveling. I don’t even know the zip codes in the next county!

Correction: device location is broken (and has been for years?)

I assume you work in software.

How hard does the HVAC guy work? I wager if you compared wages earned per hour worked (not just employed), you come out ahead. You probably beat doctors and lawyers, too.

Large salaries mean nothing if you don’t account for how much effort is expended to earn the money.
