cliffordthedog··on Trump to Apple: 'Make your products' in the US to avoid tariffs
Congress likes to be able to abdicate their responsibility and just pass it on to the president.
cliffordthedog··on Amazon’s Antitrust Antagonist Has a Breakthrough Idea
mmm, kinda seems like you're trying to attack the argument by going after a trivial part of it.
cliffordthedog··on Amazon’s Antitrust Antagonist Has a Breakthrough Idea
> Don’t let the government pursue Amazon the way it pursued A.&P., Mr. Muris and Mr. Nuechterlein warned.

why, because Amazon is so precious?

cliffordthedog··on Go says Wat
Number 4 isn't really a wat, it's just a design choice. other languages offer maps that do retain order.
cliffordthedog··on The US chip industry starts to wake up to new competitive reality
They are constantly working on faster and cheaper SSDs.
cliffordthedog··on YouTube's tendency to push everyday users toward politically extreme content
Seemingly mostly right wing content.
cliffordthedog··on On the Road to Pure Go X11 GUIs
> It's an overlooked revolution!

wat?

Go is maybe past peak hype, but it dominates in the cloud/containers space and is massively popular.

I don't like it, but this statement still seems odd.

cliffordthedog··on Tesla stock tanks as much as 9% after execs resign and Elon Musk smokes weed
Yeah but he's the cool bro CEO of a tech company. TECH COMPANY.

Losing money, it's okay because Tesla is a tech company.

Fail at core parts of a car manufacturing business, it's okay because Tesla is a tech company.

Call a pedophile, then triple down on it and... actually no that's just okay. Hope he loses that lawsuit.

cliffordthedog··on Tesla stock tanks as much as 9% after execs resign and Elon Musk smokes weed
Kinda interesting a CEO of a company with federal contracts can smoke weed and won't face any repercussions.
cliffordthedog··on Tesla Accounting Chief, HR Head Resign on the Same Day; Stock Plunges
Does the tesla fan really want to get in to an argument about build quality right now?

A fire at a factory shutting it down is not hte same type of drama as constantly missing estimates and using a tent to extend the line.

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
They had already rejected me, so who cares.

Though I do appreciate your well cultivated sense of suspicion and cynicism. Keep it up!

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
Opposite problem, too many relative to jobs.
cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
Amazon will do that the minute the math works out anyway. Encouraging workers to put up with worse and worse conditions out of fear of automation is just a race to the bottom that inevitably ends with automation anyway.
cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
Oh I totally agree with the statement when restricted to people like the author. Even then it depends on the definition of "undermining".

I think the author is cowardly, disingenuous, and dangerous.

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
Workers had a good relationship with the employer previously. Company gets bought by Amazon, a company with a notorious reputation. Workers decide not long after that they now need a union to protect their interests.

Perception wise, that seems like a direct line to "Amazon is a worse employer".

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
> Amazon will win the PR battle

Which is how corporations win the war. Know why you couldn't afford whole foods before? Because too many people are selfish and shortsighted and would rather save 1 dollar than ensure anyone else makes an extra 2 bucks an hour. Corporations, lobbyists, and government policy have been decimating unions for decades and the results are very apparent when you look at any graph of actual wages. Executives skyrocket, workers are flat at best.

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
It's a coop, that's what they do.

FWIW the dividend is pretty nice. Combined with the sale I saved a pretty solid chunk of money on a nice cooler.

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
ha, I had a job interview recently and they had me do a take home thing. They offered to pay me for it, just a few hundred dollars for the time I put in. That's cool.

But in the email they asked if I wanted the money, or I could donate it.

Right now I could use the money, but now I feel just a little bad about it.

cliffordthedog··on Whole Foods workers seek to unionize
Good timing, last thing Amazon will want right now is a battle with a union. Especially for a company they acquired so recently (shows that things got quickly worse with Amazon in charge).

Good luck Whole Foods workers.

cliffordthedog··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018)
Honestly, I would worry that the idea of a compensation package based mostly around bonuses just leads to a massive amount of infighting and politicking and other nastiness from people jockeying for an extra 20k. If I get stuck doing some bug fixes and refactoring for a couple months am I going to lose out to the person who launched 2 new features?

Not trying to be a jerk about it, but as a potential applicant that is my concern. d

cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
I agree, but I'm a lot more fine with disruption, delays, and anything constitutionally allowed coming from outside the executive branch.
cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
No, I'm saying "don't undermine the president" applies, at most, to the people in the executive branch of the government.
cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
if he's actually deranged and incompetent to the point of being unable to handle the presidency they have the option of the 25th amendment.

But they obviously do not actually believe that.

cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
These people aren't protecting the country, if you believe that.

They are enabling a dangerous man to continue in one of the most powerful offices on the planet, because they refuse to stand up and tell the truth about the matter.

cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
> the proper recourse is never actively sabotaging the president of the United States

Why not?

> however, we still have a functional supreme court

We don't. Mitch McConnell saw to that 2 years ago.

cliffordthedog··on Comparing the NYT op-ed to tweets from cabinet members
Why should any politician get to write an anonymous "covering my ass" style article like this?
cliffordthedog··on Google wants websites to adopt AMP as the default for building webpages
> My only choice was to go to the station and pay

unless it was from the actual government, your other choice was not to bother.

cliffordthedog··on Google wants websites to adopt AMP as the default for building webpages
Ends justify the means?
cliffordthedog··on Google wants websites to adopt AMP as the default for building webpages
Probably, but I doubt they even do that.

Is google the worst company around when it comes to this sort of almost faux open source?

cliffordthedog··on Google wants websites to adopt AMP as the default for building webpages
> They really have just lived long enough to become the villain

People throwing this line out has ruined the dark knight for me.

Anyway, you're exactly right. It's textbook EEE.

Their behaviour with Android is also pretty bad.

and their security disclosure policy.
