clarle··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
It’s been officially revised down to 6.8, but that’s still a lot.

Hope the residents of Kumamoto Prefecture stay safe and are able to evacuate.

clarle··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
I think a Socratic Method-style AI tutor would work, though. It would be less about the LLM providing direct educational material themselves, but making sure the student is thinking about the right questions to direct themselves in learning the material.
clarle··on An OpenAI model has disproved a central conjecture in discrete geometry
People thought neural networks were just an interesting thought exercise a few decades ago and not for practical ML problems, and look what happened since then.
clarle··on Who will buy your services if you fire us all?
Population in developed countries is already decreasing, so who knows what happens after that? Unfortunately a lot of the foundations of our economy are built on top of an ever-increasing populace.
clarle··on Cartoon Network Flash Games
So much nostalgia on Cartoon Cartoon Summer Resort. That was how I got into adventure games in the first place.
clarle··on Tell HN: AI coding is sexy, but accounting is the real low-hanging target
Isn't that the benefit of LLM-powered accounting over existing rules-based software?

LLMs can help to handle the subjectivity in how GAAP is applied and provide justifications, which previous rules-based tax software could not before.

clarle··on Why hasn't there been a new major sports league?
I think F1 got significantly more popular in the past few years with Drive to Survive on Netflix, and then most recently with the F1 movie on Apple TV.

It’s a sports league with history and has been around for a while, but I think significant popular mindshare only happened in the last 5 years.

clarle··on Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and XAI Granted Up to $200M from Defense Department
Are Amazon and Meta the ones losing out the most here, in terms of the companies building foundational models?

Probably more understandable for Meta, since they've been leaving the B2B space since Workplace has been sunset. Amazon losing out on this is pretty rough for AWS though.

clarle··on Character amnesia in China
My hot take - this isn’t that much different than English speakers not being able to write in cursive anymore. It’s just not something that’s as practiced as much now that we have digital input methods.
clarle··on COBOL has been “dead” for so long, my grandpa wrote about it
iOS development has been around for quite some time now. Most senior iOS and Cocoa developers probably started with Objective-C before slowly migrating codebases over to Swift.
clarle··on A/B testing mistakes I learned the hard way
#2 is a slippery slope if you don't do it properly.

You might look end up looking at lots of different slices of your data, and you might come to the conclusion, "Oh, it looks like France is statistically significant negative on our new signup flow changes".

It's important to make sure you have a hypothesis for the given slice before you start the experiment and not just hunt for outliers after the fact, or otherwise you're just p-hacking [1].

clarle··on EA is prototyping in-game ads even as we speak
Anarchy Online did this before…18 years ago.

clarle··on Varda Capsule Reentry – Five Minutes from LEO to Earth [video]
Out of curiosity, what's the benefit of pharmaceuticals manufacturing in space?

Is there a benefit to manufacturing drugs in low gravity environments, or is it more of an experiment to see if it's feasible, in a future where more people might be living in space?

clarle··on Riot Games laying off 11%
I loved Legends of Runeterra, but I knew the writing was on the wall from the very start.

Bummer considering it was one of the best F2P online TCGs out there (and that was probably also the problem, it's such great value for the F2P playerbase and didn't go as hard on monetization other than cosmetics).

clarle··on FAQ on Leaving Google
I don't think it's VC funding as much as being a public company, and being beholden to quarterly earnings. That's the cycle for most "revolutionary" tech companies that end up needing to keep revenue growth going each quarter.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's wrong or bad, but just the way corporations work.

clarle··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
It is more for the other bigger corporations that will have more to lose, and will be flagged via outside auditors, that will pay it accurately.
clarle··on Ibogaine banishes PTSD, small study finds
I'm not opposed to psychedelics in any way (in fact very supportive), but not having a control group seems non-scientific to me.

Maybe this is the scientific method hardliner / rationalist in me, but to me, without a control group and proper statistical controls, there's no difference between this and say, alternative medicine, such as homeopathy or acupuncture, where people claim there are benefits without a true comparison.

clarle··on Apple Vision Pro available in the U.S. on February 2
I want this to be successful, but even as an iOS / macOS dev, I haven't seen enough really strong differentiation in Apple's dev offering so far that would make it so that someone would absolutely want to use VR for a non-gaming app compared to an app on iOS.

There's some pretty great innovations there like how Spaces and gestures work, but they're more incremental improvements rather than anything that would really get the general public very willing to adopt AR/VR for daily use outside of games.

clarle··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
The vast majority of users probably would never side load. The App Store and Play Store is more of a discovery and acquisition channel than anything else.
clarle··on Missing girl found using fingerprints on ransom note
That’s the same argument used for government backdoors in phones. Yes, it’s good that these scenarios are stopped, but there’s a longer term outlook that we should take too.
clarle··on We built an AI-powered Magic the Gathering card generator

  Infernal Light
  2BB

  Sorcery
Search your library for a creature card card with power less than or equal to the number of cards in your hand, put that card onto the battlefield, and then shuffle.

The eternal flame has no fuel.
Very cool generator and it creates real-ish cards that mostly follow the color pie, but the power level is pretty bonkers for anyone that plays Magic.

I think one thing that's a challenge for a LLM is that small changes to text like "Search for a card and put that card into your hand" versus "Search for a card and put that card onto the battlefield" can have very different meanings and power levels.

clarle··on What Reddit Got Wrong
Apollo doesn't show ads, right? In fact getting users away from Apollo and onto the main Reddit app would be net revenue positive.
clarle··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
Neural network algorithm research was considered more of an academic endeavor rather than something that could have practical implications from the 1960s to even the early 2000s, compared to other machine learning algorithms. Look at where it took us today.
clarle··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
Netflix uses “between six to twelve “ in its most recent culture document.

clarle··on A non-technical explanation of deep learning
Totally aware that this isn't a fully formal definition of deep learning, but one interesting takeaway for me is realizing that in a way, corporations with their formal and informal reporting structures are structured in a way similar to neural networks too.

It seems like these sort of structures just regularly arise to help regulate the flow of information through a system.

clarle··on BuzzFeed News is shutting down
> Furthermore, Peretti told the remaining staff that he would be focusing more of the company’s energy going forward on AI. “We will empower our editorial teams at all of our brands to do the very best creative work and build an interface where that work can be repacked and brought to advertisers more effectively,” he said. “And we will bring more innovation to clients in the form of creators, AI, and cultural moments than can only happen across BuzzFeed, Complex, HuffPost, Tasty and First We Feast.”

What the heck does that mean? It sounds like someone is talking about AI as purely a buzzword without really understanding what it is.

clarle··on Show HN: Can You Hold Your Breath for 40 Seconds?
I thought it was easier when I closed my eyes and didn’t think about the time (just treated it like meditation). If I had my eyes open and saw the countdown, I kept just trying to want to breathe.
clarle··on The source code for Duelyst, a digital collectible card game
Interesting, the app itself is a web app. From the architecture docs:

> The game client is a Backbone.js + Marionette application which runs in the browser.

And for the main game server and matchmaking:

> The Game server is a Socket.io WebSocket server which handles multiplayer games.

> The worker uses Kue to poll Redis-backed queues for tasks like game creation and matchmaking.

clarle··on Artist matches influencer photos with surveillance footage
Yeah, there's no need for "AI" software on this project. From the images, it looks like a straight out-of-the-box use of YOLO v7 or something to make it seem more fancy, but this could be easily be done manually without any machine learning at all (or code for that matter).
clarle··on Why don’t we do email verification in reverse?
I think this is the big one. On iOS, I don’t think most non-technical users know how to switch their default mobile Mail client if they use another alternative like Gmail or Outlook.
