clarge1120··on Bank failures come in waves
The biggest challenge facing CBDCs (Central Bank control of Digital Currencies) is that any laws or regulations concerning them can be changed at anytime, without the consent of the governed.

See Credit Suisse.

clarge1120··on Smartphones and social media are destroying children’s mental health
Will someone please think of the children?!
clarge1120··on Google dusts off the Google+ playbook to fight ChatGPT
> ... at least until governments around the world are prepared to address a tsunami of misinformation

The American system, as designed, is diametrically opposed to waiting for governments around the world to protect you from misinformation.

clarge1120··on The False Promise of ChatGPT
Agreed. GPT isn't recycling, regurgitating, or anything like that. It's more like remixing, which is pretty fascinating. It's like having an opinionated DJ that plays whatever you ask-ish. But, if you ask for something too edgy it just plays beat-heavy Beethoven with a Run DMC voice over, on repeat.
clarge1120··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
Hahahaha! 'd69:beef:cafe:feed:face:6969:0420:0001'
clarge1120··on Banning words won’t make the world more just
As a "minority" I completely agree with you. IMO, the White Knights target the "others" for an opportunity to virtue signal. It got old after the first time it happened.
clarge1120··on Ask HN: How do you get companies to talk to you about their problems?
This is great advice.
clarge1120··on OpenAI is now everything it promised not to be: closed-source and for-profit

clarge1120··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
Half seems low, but then again, I am in the 50% that believes news organizations deliberately mislead for biased gain.
clarge1120··on Ask HN: Cold Calling. How the heck do I do that?
Don’t listen to anyone telling you that cold calling doesn’t work. It works!

You want to get a step-by-step book that you can relate to. I had to read five or six of them before I found one that really spoke to me. It was an uphill battle. But, eventually even I, a gruffy nerd, started landing appointments.

Cold calling is a little bit like getting up in the morning to do a hard work out. You have to motivate yourself. You can do it.

clarge1120··on Chat GPT is the birth of the real Web 3.0, and it's not going to be fun
The solution for Google is to filter generated content, period. That will lead to an arms race of sorts, similar to the SEO keyword arms race. The SEO arms race resulted in keyword relevant, but unoriginal minimally useful content.

The problem for Google is that their advertisers love generated content.

clarge1120··on ChatGPT Plus
> ...and challenge incorrect assumptions

What does that mean? It doesn't really matter what it means today. What matters is what will it mean when the next thing becomes the current thing.

clarge1120··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
The impact of your decision will grow with time. Always getting better. The upside is immense. The downside is that very few people will understand or share your experience.
clarge1120··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
Yes, all the way until age 40. Then, reality.
clarge1120··on DALL-E for Playlists
Quick. Release a song on Soundcloud called "Internal Server Error". Search traffic will mint you a hit in no time.
clarge1120··on DALL-E for Playlists
I suspect the training was overfit to certain kinds of music. A bot that's fine tuned with "funk", "70's funk", and other similar music will produce better results.
clarge1120··on DALL-E for Playlists
Trying to imagine what the song "Internal Server Error" sounds like because when I typed that into Spotify it just repeated the same back to me. Then my screen bulged out with a screaming face. Then went back to normal. Weird.
clarge1120··on OpenAI is in talks for tender offer that would value it at $29B
Exactly.

I will be surprised if even GPT-3 (with training data), not to mention GPT-4-5-6 or 7, is made available to the masses. There's too much potential for disruption.

Also, I'd love to be surprised.

clarge1120··on Show HN: Portable Secret – How I store my secrets and communicate privately
Cyphers, the algorithms used to encrypt the secret file, become obsolete over time.

We still need to solve for obsolescence. You can encrypt a file today using a cypher that will eventually be removed from all browsers, desktops, and phones.

clarge1120··on We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom (2021)
Drowning in information... Starving for wisdom...

No matter what we come up with, we still have to seek wisdom from the wise. The internet (AI powered or not) will never be wise.

This gives me hope for humanity, and makes me love God more.

clarge1120··on We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom (2021)
Before the real internet came and killed the forums, the weird bearded guy would lurk on the forums. He's the guy who makes you answer general questions like,

"Why would you want to do that?"

"What's this for?"

"Did you try searching before asking such a stupid question?"

clarge1120··on I still use Flash
The redpill in me says MSFT created dotnet to kill VB6. That tool made it too easy (and cheap) to create value through automation.
clarge1120··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
This could be Amazon anticipating a very slow holiday season.
clarge1120··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
And not just because of corporate layoffs.
clarge1120··on AI will replace middle management before robots replace hourly workers
Half the fun of having a bartender is to influence the alcohol content of your drinks. If the bartender has no influence on the drink the bartender/customer relationship is weak.
clarge1120··on NASA’s Webb takes star-filled portrait of Pillars of Creation
Can someone explain what I'm seeing here? It looks like there are stars in front of the Pillars of Creation itself. Is this an illusion?
clarge1120··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
It’s a miserable experience from top to bottom. Onboarding a new developer takes much longer and is far more tedious than one might expect. There are multiple layers of security employees must navigate. And when something breaks, anywhere, it’s a huge pain to sort out the source of the problem, find the right person responsible, and get something fixed.

If you find yourself in an organization that thinks this remote desktop environment is a great idea, do yourself a favor, if you can, and leave. You’ll give other devs more incentive to push back and make this a thing of the past, like “thin clients”.

clarge1120··on The Ungodly Surveillance of Anti-Porn ‘Shameware’ Apps
How do you define harm? I hope you have a straightforward answer.
clarge1120··on Revolutionary video game The Hobbit turns 40
Yes, I know. Another enlightened Woke One eager to tell the “minority” how ignorant he or she (see what I did there?) is for not understanding just how much The Message is truly helping him or her.

If only the minority would shut up and listen all the troubles would woke themselves out.

clarge1120··on Why modern software is slow
Mobile apps must be available for use within a second or two at most every time they are run. If not, we just won’t use the app. On the other hand, mobile websites can commonly take 10 seconds to become readable.

So, why are apps slow? Because they don’t need to be fast unless users will not use them otherwise.
