clajiness··on By 2500 earth could be alien to humans
> By the end of this century we'll have the technology to make carbon capture (and atmospheric carbon targeting more generally) a trivial exercise.

Source?

clajiness··on Bashcrawl: Learn Linux commands by playing a simple text adventure
> I learned with Kano OS (kid's computer kit) running on a Raspberry Pi at age 12.

I wish I had been able to use a Pi at age 12. :) I had a Commodore64 that I LOVED.

clajiness··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
> What the hell is going on when we are silencing senior scientists who are extremely worried about an experimental drug that we're giving to the entire world??!

What exactly is “experimental” about a vaccine that has not only been through very robust phase III clinical trials, but has also had literally billions of doses deployed?

clajiness··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
Yes, you can. Check out the "Framework Laptop DIY Edition". You can select to have it built without an OS.
clajiness··on Ask HN: Why is the touchpad on MacBooks still ahead of other manufacturers?
So… Why bother replying then?
clajiness··on Intel CEO: Clients Want Custom x86-Based SoCs
Read about the Synology XX15 series. At least Synology worked hard to remedy the situation.
clajiness··on FDA grants full approval to Pfizer-BioNTech’s Covid shot
Terrible comment. No one is forcing medical treatment. Private businesses can mandate vaccinations for employees, but no one is forcing the employee to continue their employment.
clajiness··on 1password is considering a self-hosted option to store vaults
Thank you for the link!
clajiness··on Warning Signals for Collapse of The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
Probably not. As a Minnesotan, I'd consider a country like Norway, but I fear that a good chunk of the coastal cities will eventually be underwater anyway.
clajiness··on US home prices surge 17% in May, fastest in 17 years
> wasn't May 2020 around peak covid terror time?

I bought my current house in May 2020. We got a ton for our old house due to people starting to move to the burbs, but still paid a good price (relative to today) for our current house. We thought we did pretty well in the grand scheme of things.

clajiness··on A dwarf planet coming within 11 AU of the sun over the next 10 years
> its orbit takes it from just beyond the orbit of Saturn (10.9 AU) all the way out to the Oort Cloud

It looks like it currently orbits the sun.

clajiness··on Oregon has legalized human composting
Lake Superior is perpetually cold and near-sterile when you get deep enough. Not the greatest place if you want bodies to decompose.
clajiness··on Windows 10 to be retired in 2025, as new OS unveils
Same. No need for the Microsoft account, although it is tricky to find.
clajiness··on Experts call it a 'clown show' but Arizona 'audit' is a disinformation blueprint
How many times are you going to copy/paste this?

dO yOuR oWn ReSeArCh!

clajiness··on Amazon devices will soon automatically share your Internet with neighbors
> You mean, like AirTag/Find My?

Can you explain your comparison?

clajiness··on Amazon acquires MGM for $8.5B
> Since then; Netflix and (...x streaming platform) made it easier/better to Pay for the content than pirate it.

I'd argue that Sonarr, Radarr, etc, have made this process far easier and better than paying for it.

clajiness··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
Trees.
clajiness··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
> Basically jewelers refuse to buy back diamonds at any reasonable price (compared to original retail value. And refuse to make new rings with old diamond etc.

I bought my wife's diamond out of an ugly ring I found at a pawn shop. I brought it to a jeweler at a mall and had him pop it in one of his bands.

I saved a TON of money, my wife got a modern design with a really high quality stone, and the jeweler still got some business and his ring on another finger.

Win/Win

clajiness··on Wi-Fi packet capturing on M1 Macs is broken
> plus, whoever idiot designed the usb-at-the-bottom mouse

The batteries last so long in those mice, plus you can get an almost full day's charge in about two minutes. It takes a real idiot to run into issues with it. :)

clajiness··on Apple's follow-up to M1 chip goes into mass production for Mac
> "This would be quite an accelerated timeline if Apple ships its second-generation M-series chip only eight months after the first."

The M1 was available on Nov. 17th, 2020. The article states that the chip is entering mass production, and due for release sometime in 2H. This could easily be released a year after the M1, if not 13 months later.

clajiness··on Ubiquiti all but confirms breach response iniquity
We can assume what they were implying, but it seems like a legitimate question.

Also, Ubiquiti is an American company, right?

clajiness··on My NAS exposes itself over the internet without permission
I'm gaming on my Xbox right now with specific ports forwarded. I guess "absolutely must" is a bit much, huh? UPNP has no place in a secure network.
clajiness··on Whistleblower: Ubiquiti Breach “Catastrophic”
When did link aggregation become "fancy corporate garbage"?
clajiness··on Voltswagen of America
Exactly. Most other manufacturers were/are cheating as well.

I've owned a few recent VWs and have found they're fine vehicles. The current gen Tiguan was underpowered, but my MK7 GTI and MK7.5 Golf R are amazing cars. I have a feeling I'll be driving the R for a long time.

clajiness··on The S in IoT is for Security
You do know that you can prevent IOT devices from reaching the internet, right? Our Wemo gear, cameras, etc, get blocked by my firewall. Problem solved while still benefiting from their convenience.
clajiness··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
They do, in fact, help on ice. There are plenty of youtube videos showing winter tire demos on hockey rinks.

And again, yes, they help substantially in 2 feet of snow.

I agree that properly treated roads are necessary, but we treat roads for the lowest common denominator. If we as a population properly prepared (say that three times fast) for poor road conditions, we and our environment would be way better off.

clajiness··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
Maybe, just maybe, more people could start buying winter tires. I wish our local governments would require them during the winter.
clajiness··on Amazon Is Forcing Its Warehouse Workers into Brutal 'Megacycle' Shifts
I don't think that's the point being debated.
clajiness··on Ubiquiti Networks Breach
Ok. Why? I have one and it's great.
clajiness··on U.S. Bill H.R.69 introduced – To make daylight savings time permanent
The government can't even call it what it is; Daylight saving time.
