city17··on Show HN: I made CSS Pro, a re-imagined Devtools for web design
Thanks, I was thinking of a similar solution too, but the tricky part is filtering and finding the right CSS properties to display. From my quick attempt this is a non-trivial task as there is no easy built-in way to get just the computed styles of classes on the specific element and those of its close ancestors. And even among those, not all are always relevant.
city17··on Show HN: I made CSS Pro, a re-imagined Devtools for web design
Does anyone know a good extension that just does the hover / inspect element for the CSS styles in a nice way like this app?

Seems much more convenient than diving into dev tools every time you want to quickly check an element’s property. 30/month is a bit excessive for just that one function.

city17··on The rise and fall of Bootstrap and how Tailwind became the go-to CSS framework
I recently started using Tailwind and really enjoy how fast it makes building new UIs. However, I wonder how we'll view this in the future, when people have to actually go back into older projects using Tailwind and look at the jungle of classnames.

At some point there can be so many classnames on different elements that you basically arrive back at the original problem of complex stylesheets where you don't know what is affecting what.

Combine that with the fact that you need to have good knowledge to which CSS styles each classname refers, and I can see a lot of headaches down the line when someone has to fix the styles on a complex component.

city17··on Ask HN: Is anyone else getting AI fatigue?
Although I understand your sentiment, I think it’s an inevitable phase in the development of any new groundbreaking technology.

People are still trying to figure out what the new AIs can and can’t be used for.

Some people will try to build ridiculous products that don’t work, but that’s just part of the learning process and those things will be weeded out over time.

There’s no ‘clean’ path to finding all the useful applications of these new models, so be prepared to be bombarded with AI powered tools for a few more years until the most useful ones have been figured out.

city17··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
Edge was good when it was a lightweight alternative to bloated Chrome, but in the last 2 years they've added so many unnecessary features that it's now noticeably slower.
city17··on ChatGPT Plus
I noticed the announcement in the latest update that it was supposedly better at math, but the first simple calculations I gave it were all wrong. Not sure how it was improved at all.
city17··on Show HN: Plus – Self-updating screenshots
This seems identical to the live screenshots you can add to an easel in the Arc browser [1]. I've created a view with that that shows a collection of different analytics sites, that all update automatically. Only downside is that occasionally you have to login to keep those views up to date.

city17··on Why everything looks the same
You're right, this process has always happened. But I think these days it's different in that it is almost completely globalized, whereas before you would have different trends in different countries, and trends are able to spread more quickly, resulting in less experimentation/differentation by those who aren't aware of the trend yet.
city17··on Thoughts on Arc Browser
Had to get used to it initially, but now I really love Arc. On other browsers I always used to bookmark things and never look at them again, because it's such a hassle to remember where you put something. The 3-tier system of pinned items (frequently used apps like youtube, discord, slack etc), pinned items per space, and then normal tabs works great.

I do think Arc will remain a niche browser though, because to get the most out of it you really need to use the command palette and I don't think the average user will bother with that.

city17··on iPhone 14 Pro camera review: A small step, a huge leap
The funny thing is that for all the amazing technological improvements discussed, all the pictures in the article actually show that A. having a photographer who knows how to frame things, and sees the right moment to capture an image, and B. having a subject worthwhile photographing, are way more important than having a top tier quality camera.

city17··on Reversible and irreversible decisions (2018)
I try to apply a similar mental model to new purchases. It can be tempting to weigh all the pros and cons of different products and find out a detailed list of all the possible alternatives.

But often you just have to try a product to find out if it works for you. In that case it can help to think about what risk there is in just buying something that seems ok.

If you can return it easily, or if it doesn't lose much value in using and you can sell it used for 90% of the new price then there's no real downside to just making a quick decision.

Detailed analysis is only really worth it for more 'irreversible' purchases where it's either a big hassle to undo the purchase (buying a house) or there's a large cost (cars lose value quickly).

city17··on macOS Ventura is now available
There's a few nice quality of life features in Ventura, but MacOS really seems way down Apple's priority list nowadays.

They're using all software building resources for iOS and then just slap any reusable features on their desktop OS whenever possible. Great when it works for apps that are quite similar (e.g. messages), terrible for things that simply work very differently on a desktop OS (system settings, stage manager is pointless etc.).

Good opportunity for Windows to finally beat MacOS in UI/UX, since they don't have a mobile OS to worry about?

city17··on Never trust a system that seems to be working
Thanks, that's interesting. I can see why it's easier for him to tweet in that case. But still doesn't change the fact that an article is easier to consume for the reader.
city17··on Never trust a system that seems to be working
Was thinking the same. Once you exceed like 5 tweets in a thread, it becomes a small article and you would've been better off just writing an article in the first place. If you check the thread reader below you can see just how unstructured and incoherent it is compared with a simple article.
city17··on Why Men Are Hard to Help
Interesting article with a clear analysis of the problem, just wish the author would have gone more in-depth on possible causes. Even if there is no clear statistical evidence for why men are doing worse, it can still be helpful to explore possible reasons, rather than just stating 'we don't know'.
city17··on What Figma plans to do inside Adobe
Sometimes the lack of an answer can be just as telling, making it still worth asking even if they won't answer the question directly.
city17··on Show HN: Get conversational practice in over 20 languages by talking to an AI
Good point. It was just something I observed, and wondered if it was a common issue with these language AIs, or something specific to this one.
city17··on Show HN: Get conversational practice in over 20 languages by talking to an AI
It's impressive, the answers the AI gives are a lot more insightful than I expected. But they do seem somewhat isolated, in the sense that it can answer two questions about the same topic in a very different way, that are not logically consistent with each other.

E.g. first I asked: What do you think about Famous Person X?, the AI answered 'He's great'. Then when a few seconds later I asked: 'Don't you think Famous Person X is [something bad]?', the AI answered that he completely agreed and gave reasons why he thinks this is the case.

The answers in isolation seem very sensible, but the lack of consistency throughout the conversation as a whole can make it seem as if you're not talking to a real person.

city17··on Charl-e: “Stable Diffusion on your Mac in 1 click”
On Replicate it takes maybe around 10-15 seconds. My M1 Pro only has 16GB and 8 cores and takes about 1 minute, so maybe the lower specs make quite a difference.
city17··on Charl-e: “Stable Diffusion on your Mac in 1 click”
How fast does Stable Diffusion run on an M1 Max? I'm using an M1 Pro and I find it too slow. I'd rather use an online service that costs $0.01 per image but generates an image in a matter of seconds than wait 1 minute for a free one.
city17··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Really hope they won't force you to use Creative Cloud, but it seems inevitable in the long term as that's Adobe's core business model.

I don't even really dislike their software that much (although it is somewhat antiquated), I just hate the extreme bloat of CC and the poor integration between their apps. It's really 2000s legacy software. Instead of bringing Figma into the Adobe system, they should make Photoshop etc. more like Figma.

city17··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Figma's blog post title [0] being 'A collaboration with Adobe', when it's really an acquisition seems like a warning sign.
