ciropantera··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Same. I used to run a Pegasus pair to the ground and get a new one (ideally previous year's) without even thinking about it. They were usually cheaper than the competition and worked fine for me so why not. At some point they got just as expensive as a Hoka pair so I tried one and I'm not coming back. I'll try the Decathlon next time :) any particular model you would recommend?
ciropantera··on Nobel Disease
Agreed, and I think conflating these two is one of the reasons for the resistance towards the lab leak theory that gp mentioned.
ciropantera··on Nobel Disease
Lab leak is one thing, "deliberately created and escaped" is a different story.
ciropantera··on Nobel Disease
A lot of these aren't "strange or scientifically unsound ideas" but downright racism. Whether Nobel prize recipients are less or more racist than their contemporaries is debatable but I'm not sure they fit the same category as "believed in ghosts" or "claims to have talked to a fluorescent racoon".
ciropantera··on Overdose deaths are falling in America because of a 'supply shock': study
At least in Europe the heroin gap was mostly filled with crack from Latin America.
ciropantera··on FTC's rule banning fake online reviews goes into effect
> Especially because so many of them aren't tuned for paying any attention at all to what their users are doing before prompting them

I had Napper, a baby sleep tracker, ask me to rate the app at 3 am. Yes, I'm definitely going to give a thorough and well-thought review at 3 am.

ciropantera··on Timeshare owner? The Mexican drug cartels want you
They cover that in their sales pitch. There's supposedly a market for trading timeshares, so you can trade in your timeshare for someone else's, specially if you have a highly coveted one

Of course none of it is as easy as they make it sound.

ciropantera··on Timeshare owner? The Mexican drug cartels want you
Yeah I also got dragged into one of those while on vacation in a timeshare property in exchange for some tour tickets. The tactics are truly despicable. They insisted that me and my wife shouldn't talk to each other in our language because "it's not polite". We didn't speak the local language very well (although we could understand it), so this was obviously to keep us from talking to each other and be more vulnerable. They tried to waste as much of our time as possible in the hopes that we just sign the damn contract to get rid of them and enjoy our vacation.

I'd never heard of timeshare back then, but luckily the deal sounded really bad anyway and we were very adamant on not making any decisions under pressure even if it meant losing this "once in a lifetime offer". In the end they begrudgingly gave our tickets to the tours and ushered us out.

ciropantera··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
As a new father that will eventually get into that situation: how do you ban Roblox in your house? I imagine it’s popular among your kids’ real world acquaintances (school etc). Doesn’t banning it exclude your kids from these groups? Do they feel left out?

Given the current state of gaming and where it’s heading I would love to ban gaming altogether but I feel social pressure from other kids makes it very hard.

ciropantera··on It's still easy for anyone to become you at Experian
Something similar happened to me once. You need a valid CPF number (something like a ssn) to create an account on most webshops in Brazil, so fraudsters will use stolen ones. They then proceed to purchase stuff with stolen CCs
ciropantera··on Dutch rules will soon prevent schoolchildren from having a phone in classroom
I don’t know if this is the case, but I’ve noticed questionable news outlets reposting their own old articles, possibly to game google news search or something
ciropantera··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
> I remember seeing a claim that the Bluetooth part was a feature since you could just "pass the controller" inside the cabin but I haven't been able to find a source for it.

ciropantera··on Google is getting a lot worse because of the Reddit blackouts
> If Google gave me the ability to block certain sites from my search results

uBlacklist?

ciropantera··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
> Think about what that means for the future of all auto mechanics. Will there be far fewer?

Definitely. This is one of the reasons why dealerships are reluctant with EVs: apparently a big chunk of their profits come from servicing the cars they sell.

ciropantera··on Dell goes back on WFH pledge, forces employees to come back to the office
Yeah that's the most interesting thing for me as well. I'm also curious about how wfh was granted and then removed: was there a contract change to guarantee it? Or did they simply "promise" to do so? If there was a contractual change to guarantee wfh, can they make another change and remove it just like that?

I've learned the hard way to never organize my life around benefits that are "promised" but not in my contract. This here is exactly what happens every single time: the person who made you the promise leaves the company and the promise goes along with them.

Well SBF was a big dem donor, let's see how that works out for him
ciropantera··on Instagram Is Disabling Its NFT Features
After the 1000th "last nail in the coffin" I gave up believing that this will end someday. I see it becoming one of those ever-lasting scams that go up and down in popularity, like piramid schemes, tourist scams, 419 scams etc.
ciropantera··on YouTube has become the world's nanny
How are these channels monetized? I heard a while back that YouTube kids had no ads or heavily restricted them. Did something change there?
ciropantera··on Leaked Slack all-hands meeting reveals a ‘strong culture clash’ with Salesforce
Yes, I've been in this situation too. What at a first glance might look like the best of both worlds - low bureaucracy and solid funding - turns out to be the worst of both worlds: all of the bureaucracy of the mother company plus the risk of the whole project getting the axe every quarter because it doesn't make any profits
ciropantera··on The United States of America vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried Indictment [pdf]
Yeah, such a silly take to imagine that politicians would go down with a blatant fraudster like that just because he gave them a couple of mil for their candidacies. A big part of being a skillful politician is knowing not to tie yourself to corpses like SBF.
ciropantera··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
A gun has many purposes, some legitimate (law enforcement, "defense" etc), others less so. A code change that allows the company to do illegal things has no legitimate purpose.

I think what's up to debate is to what extent the developers were lied to regarding the purpose of the code. Maybe they were told it was for testing purposes only, or the higher ups managed to convince them that it's ok despite them questioning it. I suppose those things will come up during investigation and will certainly affect their sentences, but I don't think they will be off the hook that easily.

ciropantera··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
The writing is usually on the wall for a while before the layoff actually happens, so there's time for you to let your manager know that you wouldn't mind getting the boot.
ciropantera··on An odd discovery on Spotify
Exactly, thanks
ciropantera··on An odd discovery on Spotify
I heard a similar story a couple of years ago: some no-name artist with a fairly good amount of plays on Spotify who could not be found anywhere else online. It was less obviously ai-generated back then (more instrumental than vibe/ambient), so it was speculated that it could be a musician working on commission for Spotify, who was then stuffing their playlists with these songs to cut costs. I can't find any traces of this story anymore though.
ciropantera··on The Google Pixel 6a highlights the problem with the U.S. phone market
I think one point you might have missed in your analysis is the form factor. I'm in Europe and I'm seriously considering getting a Pixel 6a because it's the smallest one amongst the phones in this price range. It's not small, but it's also not a comically large slab that doesn't fit any pocket as some of the other "good enough" phones out there. That, plus 5 years of security updates and a stock Android experience are enough to justify the price difference which is not even that big anyway - 469 Euros vs 400 Euros for Nord 2T, same price for Nothing Phone etc
ciropantera··on The Best iPhone
How's the battery life? My wife got a 12 mini and while I love the size, the battery is abysmal and barely lasts a day for her.
ciropantera··on The entertainment value curve: Why TikTok is on fire and Quibi isn’t (2020)
Slightly unrelated but it's crazy to see how fast the sentiment towards Netflix has changed. This article from 2 years ago refers to Netflix as the platform everybody loves who can't do no wrong. I don't think I have read any positive articles about Netflix written in the last 6 months or so.
ciropantera··on Americans are drowning in spam
Out of curiosity, you got these scam calls in Finnish? I always thought that US was a specially good market for these scams because you have ~300m potential victims and a good supply of english-speaking people in poorer countries who are willing to participate on the scheme, so a Finnish-speaking ms support scam would be hard to understand from this point of view.
ciropantera··on YC-backed uBiome is basically Theranos-lite
I feel like people stopped giving credibility to celebrity endorsement in the traditional form because they know celebrities are just getting paid to read a script, so companies had to come up with something that signals a deeper relationship with the brand, and that something is this phony C-level position. The celebrities also benefit from being able to add "entrepreneur" to their Instagram bios. I believe this trend started with Intel and it's "Chief Innovation Officer" (or something like that) Will.i.am a couple of years ago
ciropantera··on Why I love Formula 1 (and why you might like it too)
Yes, this struck me as a weird sentence, specially given the amount of rule tinkering that went on in the recent years to make it a little bit less boring.
