chrisstu··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
His argument has all the intellectual strength of a newborn lamb.
chrisstu··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
A fancy word, presumably used in this context in an attempt to make the argument that stealing copyright material has no negative consequences.
chrisstu··on The Barbican
Nice article. I like the Barbican and have spent a fair bit of time there over the last 25 years. I even worked out how to get from A to B without getting lost. Not been recently though.

The appearance of various Barbican adjacent locations in Slow Horses was a nice touch. And very on-point given the nature of Slough House.

Do they still have the rubber foot pedals to make the water come out of the taps in the public loos? Of course, being the Barbican the loos smell appalling and the taps frequently don't work, but it's all part of the charm.

chrisstu··on 'Tech entrepreneur took our money but failed to deliver our startup dreams'
And guess who is paying for her mistake? Everyone except the perpetrator. That bank refund comes from somewhere.
chrisstu··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Or more likely lose it all and have to work again.
chrisstu··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
My take is the opposite of yours. The guy loves SV culture. Most of the article is a humble-brag about it.

His problem is that $60m is not enough to be an important player in that world. He was just a cog in the DOGE machine which wasn't enough after being number 1 at Loom.

He has now decided to study physics to try and be like the tech bro messiah Elon.

chrisstu··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Thankyou. It's a relief to know that other people share my opinion after reading this appalling article.

The author is too dumb to even effectively disguise the extent to which he is just showing off throughout the article.

I suppose the fact that Musk is his idol sums it up.

chrisstu··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
With that money, I'm sure the author will find a trophy wife, despite his personality flaws. It feels like that might all be part of the plan for his "next chapter" after leaving his girlfriend. "Sorry, it's not you, it's me". Classic.
chrisstu··on eBay Buyer Protection Fee
I guess their annual profit growth is not enough ;-)

What irritates me the most is the way they are still describing it as free to sellers when in reality sellers will have to eat this fee by reducing their asking price to remain competitive.

chrisstu··on eBay Buyer Protection Fee
In reality I think the seller will eat this fee by having to reduce the selling price. But your point remains.
chrisstu··on eBay Buyer Protection Fee
In the UK, ebay will add 75p plus 4% to private seller prices. Somehow they still describe their service as free to private sellers.
chrisstu··on Show HN: I built a(nother) house optimized for LAN parties
What makes you think he is flaunting his wealth? Maybe he is just showing this implementation to help people with ideas.

And saying you won't check responses to your comment is pure arrogance. Unlike the original poster who seems a nice guy.

chrisstu··on Thousands of Pablo Picasso’s works in a new online archive
Sorry to be that guy, but this site is terrible to navigate as a non-French speaker. I'm not sure it would be that great as a French speaker. I've seen online archives from other Museums that do a far better job of making their exhibits more accessible.
chrisstu··on New signs appear to ban phones from Temple Quay
I feel like we didn't really need you to explain that to us.
chrisstu··on New signs appear to ban phones from Temple Quay
Good point and yet another indication that the sign was created by a numbskull.
chrisstu··on New signs appear to ban phones from Temple Quay
Well done, one of the least accurate statements I've ever read on HN.
chrisstu··on Hacking my “smart” toothbrush
This is a nice idea. The problem is longevity. I'd be willing to bet this product disappears after a few years (best case scenario) and you are left with no ability to buy new heads and end up binning the brush. So net net you probably waste more than buying a Philips/Oral-B brush that likely has 10+ years of support for brush heads, which have a far lower environmental impact than replacing the brush. In terms of cost, if you buy the well known brands when they are on sale, they're generally pretty cheap. I'll admit they do try to sting you if you buy at RRP.
chrisstu··on Hacking my “smart” toothbrush
Good article from an intellectual curiosity perspective. I use the Philips Sonicare brushes, although I've been using 3rd party heads for years due to the cost difference (3X cheaper). Philips obviously wants to deter people like me from this behaviour. I see they no longer sell non-RFID heads, even when the old brushes lack this feature. Yet more e-waste as they try to nudge customer upgrades.
chrisstu··on Show HN: OpenBB Terminal – Investment research for everyone
Totally off topic comment. Why are you here?
chrisstu··on Laser Lightening Rod
An ambitious experiment on a Swiss mountaintop has demonstrated that a laser beam also can help guide the path of lightning, extending the effectiveness of the Franklin rod high into the sky.
chrisstu··on mRNA Cancer Vaccine Trial Success
“You get the tissue from a tumour, sequence it and then over a six-week period of time you manufacture a vaccine that matches the top 10 to 20 mutations,” she said.

Bauman said the vaccine stimulates a person’s immune system to selectively target those cancer cells.

chrisstu··on On second thought, just throw plastic away
It would be very interesting to see the funding sources of this journal and whether plastic manufacturers are contributors. The plastics industry has created the myth of plastic recycling and perhaps it now wants to undo that as it realizes that the public still wants to get rid of single use plastics.
chrisstu··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
Really, I thought she removed the titles. Where is the story about her regranting them?
chrisstu··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
I hate to say it but that is one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
chrisstu··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
You think she enjoyed the trappings of wealth? I never had that impression. And no, she didn't "sign up for it", she became Queen as a result of birth. Yes, she could have abdicated but the fact that she chose duty is to her credit. She was not faultless, but it's difficult to imagine another monarch doing a better job. I say all this as an anti-monarchist. I don't want one, but if we have to have one, she was the best.
chrisstu··on UK inflation forecast to hit 18.6% next year, energy bills may rise to £6000
Read what numeric83 said. I couldn't have put it better myself. The longer they leave it the worse it gets. But human nature means they won't act until the train hits them in the face.
chrisstu··on UK inflation forecast to hit 18.6% next year, energy bills may rise to £6000
A looming catastrophe in the UK and the government is doing nothing. I've seen some crazy stuff here over the last 12 years but this is next level.
chrisstu··on Work-life balance: A perspective from Jack Nicklaus
Surprisingly few mentions of the orange elephant in the room here. Perhaps Don Jr shot the elephant on a "hunting" trip.
chrisstu··on Instagram Has Become SkyMall
The author is on-point here. I now love the instagram ads for their comedy value. Although I'm currently seeing a lot of elasticated waistband trousers that apparently look like normal well-fitting trousers. I guess my instagram browsing habits now fit that middle aged fat guy demographic. Damn!
chrisstu··on Instagram Has Become SkyMall
Yeah commenting on an article without reading it kinda sucks doesn't it?
