As a side note the internet filter mentioned in the article never received enough votes and the government minister in charge of the program conceded that it likely never will.
Great idea :)
For things like site designs and old code I would take a look at the marketplace section of the Digitalpoint forums or maybe even http://themeforest.net.
I would really love to use them to monitor all of our servers but their current plans don't work for us. We use lots of tiny instances and virtual machines. This means for us the cost of Cloudkick for each VM would be around the actual monthly cost of that VM.
If you have are in a different position to myself and are using larger instances then I would recommend you give them a try!
I would suggest expanding the box to show all the users saved results for that search. If you are committed to keeping it limited to 3 results I would suggest moving the "more results" link to a more prominent position under the links and possibly showing a counter next to it so it looks like "$num_links more results".
Maybe include some information on the front page describing how the service works. If you want to go all out link to a video demonstration of it working or a quick walk through.
Also you should have a short url that I can tweet/email to someone else that will load up the bookmarks I saved. This would be helpful if I was trying to help someone find information.
To take it one step further approach popular photography blogs and offer them the referral deal. Most of the large camera / photography blogs are already making their money through affiliate programs so there is a good chance they will be interested.
Probably <500 cache hits per second (a large portion of the content isn't cacheable).
So I should be able to serve that from a fairly low spec machine.
If you don't want to go the Google Apps route take a look at http://roundcube.net/ .
Edit: It looks like Roundcube can use a MySQL db to store mail.
I would say that 95% of communication (excluding face to face) between people I know is conducted over Facebook. In addition to that all events are organised through Facebook, if I didn't have an account I would be missing out.
When I meet someone new I don't exchange phone numbers anymore I exchange Facebook details.
For me at least Facebook is my phone number and email address all rolled into one. If I didn't have it I would be unreachable for a good percentage of people I know.
This might not be typical I'm a younger person with a good percentage of my friends still in college or just leaving to start work.
If you have all the features laid out you should start building a prototype of the service. Seeing the basic features start to come together is great inspiration to keep building and improving the site.
I can fill out a basic signup form in about 30 seconds, if it requires my credit card details it will take me a few extra minutes to look around and find my wallet etc.
Looking forward to testing this out. Any idea of when you will be ready to release the beta?
I just can't see that happening anytime soon unless Google can come up with a killer feature that Facebook can't easily replicate.
