chrismiller··on “Logistics”, an 857-hour movie, tracks a pedometer from shop back to factory
Would love to help you get this back online if you are interested! Happy to host it or point you in the right direction if you'd like to do it yourself.
chrismiller··on Malware in open-source web extensions
I really want to thank you for your work on uBlock.

No other software that has contributed so much to my overall happiness, productivity and well-being.

I just double checked the repo but couldn’t find a way to support your work. Is there any way I can donate or send something your way?

chrismiller··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
Is there any way to get in contact? I might be able to help.
chrismiller··on Ask HN: Just bought my first Mac. What should I know?
You can maximize a window by holding shift when clicking the maximise button.
chrismiller··on Stripe raises $18 million from Sequoia
Seriously please come to Australia!

I have a project ready to go (with the exception of billing). It is almost impossible for an Australian business to easily accept credit card payments in USD.

I have looked at Saasy.com but the lack of data portability makes it an unattractive option.

chrismiller··on Google threatens to cut ties with Chamber of Commerce over Protect-IP lobbying
OP's link goes to the 2nd page of the article. The first page is here http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67603.html

Milo was acquired by eBay [1], not Google.

This is a great idea. $250 seems like a bargain for most of these domains.

How frequently are you going to be adding new domains? I would love to be able to receive an email when new domains are added.

chrismiller··on Ask HN: Scalable way of logging page request data from a PHP application?
If you do go the MySQL route be sure to check out INSERT DELAYED http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/insert-delayed.html
chrismiller··on Ask HN: Good video introductions to a start up service?
Adam Lisagor[1] has made a few great startup videos. Check out the video he did for Flipboard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2vpvEDS00o or the video he did for Square http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSzsFAJAKHI .

chrismiller··on The cost of cloud hosting vs. colocation
As you note in the article $105/mb for bandwidth is extremely pricey.

With a 4 rack commit most colo providers would just throw in the 54mb of bandwidth for free. That being the case you would save a further ~$100k a year.

chrismiller··on SurveyMonkey to buy Wufoo (YC W06) for $35m
Not a snarky question, I am just confused.

Where do these numbers come from? How is Wufoo helping it's customers collect revenue?

chrismiller··on How would you store 500TB of stuff you don't need everyday?
Something I just realised (not sure if you took this into account in your calculations) is that the article we linked was published in 2009.

In all of their calculations they list 1.5tb Sata HDDs as costing $129. Those same disks can now be purchased for between $50 and $60. So at 45 disks in each of the servers that would be a saving of $3105 per server or ~$46,000 in total savings.

chrismiller··on How would you store 500TB of stuff you don't need everyday?
I know you said you are currently using colocated servers but have you had a look at http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-h... ?

A few of these replicating between each other might be cheaper than the less dense server + S3 combo you have at the moment.

[edit] The cost of the Backblaze units is ~$117 per TB so it would cost ~$59,000 to store 500TB or $118,000 for 2 redundant copies.

$118,000 would be equal to only a few months of hosting 500TB on S3.

chrismiller··on How Two American Kids Became Big-time Arms Dealers
Really interesting article. This would make for an excellent movie.
chrismiller··on Ask HN: Privacy conscious analytics?
Check out http://piwik.org/. It's a self hosted stats package.
chrismiller··on [dead]
Fake or not they did a very convincing job of making it look real.
chrismiller··on Google to Launch Major New Social Network Called Circles, Possibly Today
Google does not seem to own circles.com. I wonder if they are planning on using google.com/circles or maybe another alternative domain.
chrismiller··on Instagram Now Adding 130,000 Users Per Week
The post was written by a 3rd party and not Instagram. The last section of the article explains how they managed to get the data:

"Four things allowed us to conduct this analysis: Instagram’s new API, their use of incrementing ID numbers to represent users and photos, the central limit theorem"

chrismiller··on Twitter Suspends UberTwitter And Twidroyd For Violating Policies
Anyone else notice that #Twittermobile is a promoted trend? Twitter are really pushing their own app today.
chrismiller··on Show HN: soft-launching one of my pet projects
Looks good.

My one UI nitpick would be that clicking the "Read another random clue" button takes you to a random clue but that button is not present on the new page. I spent ~5 confused seconds looking for the button again before I noticed the link in the header. In my opinion the button should also be present on the clue page.

If you are looking for some content to get the site started Reddit recently had a huge thread full of hints and tips like this.

chrismiller··on RIP Pandora, Kindle on the iPhone
Not true. I'm working on a music webapp for iOS and the audio keeps playing if you exit Safari/lock the device. It's actually quite annoying as the only way to stop the music is to open Safari and pause the audio.
chrismiller··on Ask HN: Who do you use to sell your ad space?
Thanks for the reply Todd. We aren't serving ads quite yet (no ads served during beta) but I will be in touch when the site goes live!
chrismiller··on Ask HN: Who do you use to sell your ad space?
Buysellads.com looks great as a self service option. However does anyone have a recommendation for a company that will actively try and seek out advertisers for you?
chrismiller··on All 637,000 followers of Wikileaks Subject to US Government Subpoena
I think they are talking about section B of attachment A (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/01/07...) :

"B. All records and other information relating to the account(s) and time period in Part A, including:

1. Records of user activity for any connections made to or from the Account, including the date, time, length and method of connections, data transfer volume, user name, and source and destination Internet Protocol address(es);"

I guess it depends on how they are defining connection. Connection could mean a user following that account, replying or direct messaging. On the other hand they might just want details on each time the user named in the subpoena logged into their account.

I am guessing that this isn't a request for 637,000 users information because Twitter has notified those accounts where information has been requested and they certainly have not notified 637,000 people.

chrismiller··on What increases signups by 28%? ‘Watch a video’ or ‘Get instant access’
I didn't even notice the bar the first time I read the article, I actually had to go back to the site to see what you were talking about in this comment.
chrismiller··on Ask HN: If you had to pay ~5$ per month for an online service, what would it be?
You should check out Geckoboard. It is pretty much exactly what you described. It is also free, so you can spend that $5 on an extra coffee every month :)
chrismiller··on Dear Twitter, we see your 31 providers and raise you 134. Embedly (YC W10)
I don't think thats the point. The point is they are scraping content without seeking approval.
chrismiller··on SimpleCDN has been effectively kicked off the Internet by its ISPs w/o warning
100TB a month = ~300mbps of constant use. The Unmetered upgrade means that you could saturate the full 1gbps for the entire month.
chrismiller··on Looking at the code behind our three uses of Apache Hadoop
Facebook engineering have been posting some really interesting information in the last few weeks. I've always wondered how Facebook manages backups for their MySQL data. It never occurred to me that they might be using Hadoop.

Kind of unrelated but the comments on this posts make me cringe:

"please fix the issues with unblocked people being invisible or it makes you look like complete idiots as programmers since they are still blocked after being clicked unblocked.....I think my seven year old could have coded it by now.geesh."

and

"but dese details cud help hackerz"
