What other examples are there of "single dependency stacks"?

This article is really about the versatility and reliability of postgres.

And I'm all in agreement.

Reminiscent of:

As much as HN could lead you astray with the hype of this and that tech, articles like the above are some of the most consistently upvoted on this website.

chishaku··on Show HN: OneModel – Diagramming tailor-made for Software Engineers
Check out mermaid [0] for plain text diagramming that's easily version controlled.

It's also natively rendered in obsidian [1] without any plugins.

Not affiliated, just very happy with this plain text and local workflow.

Which db is that?

Either way, that’s not happening.

chishaku··on Show HN: Code Hike – More than syntax highlighting

chishaku··on Germany will legalize marijuana and promote drug harm reduction
No.

There is precedent in various US states and a handful of countries.

Cost benefit analysis of what is actually happening in these places is a key motivator for the continued wave of legalization around the world.

This is much studied.

Also, I'm not sure if you literally mean "a few orders of magnitude" or are using that phrase to simply mean "an increase".

chishaku··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
> I bet nearly no one who buys crypto even knows what fiat money is

You're uninformed.

GS, BofA, Barclays, Citi, CS, DB, JPM, MS, UBS, WF and countless funds.

The current hype cycle would be nothing without the institutional support.

But even before institutional investors started jumping in, traders and other employees of the above institutions have long been a key part of crypto markets.

chishaku··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
The market aside from crypto is not rational.

The market we have today would be completely unimaginable to "traditional" market participants 12 years ago, 24 years ago and so on.

The myth of a rational market is a powerful one.

chishaku··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
> It’s a scary but essential truth to realise that normal software engineers like us are an integral part of society’s immune system against the enormous moral hazard of technology-hyped asset bubbles metastasizing into systemic risk.

Myopic and uninformed.

Pretend crypto doesn't exist and you still have a market rife with moral hazard and technology-hyped asset bubbles that metastasize into systemic risk to the point of bringing down the real economy in increasingly shorter crash cycles.

Is crypto a cause or a symptom?

chishaku··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
It’s not perfect but it did take me about 5 minutes to resolve when I created 3 clones of my main vault.

The main issue was changing the relative path references to the templates and and assets directories.

chishaku··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
Everything changes when you ditch the network and store the database locally (markdown files and json metadata).

I used Notion for years before Obsidian and the speed alone is a reason to never go back.

On a related note, I also consider Linear to be quite fast and responsive especially when you learn the keyboard shortcuts. And to achieve that responsiveness, they load the whole database (or deltas) at startup.

chishaku··on Functools – The Power of Higher-Order Functions in Python
Being weird isn’t sufficient evidence for being worse which is what you seem to be arguing.

Why is having to name a function doing more harm than good?

Your second paragraph is a straw man.

chishaku··on What is ranked-choice voting and why is New York using it?
Spoiler alert: they don't argue what's best.

Very weak evidence offered but the motivation behind the article was near the top.

"They also appeal to more ideological voters—especially on the left—by arguing that they can express their views with more precision in a ranked-choice system."

chishaku··on Twitter's Dorsey auctions first ever tweet as digital memorabilia
Completely aside from NFTs and any details of this specific asset, cash needs a return and will follow the prospect of it anywhere.

We’re in an everything bubble and the recent investment/attention boom for NFTs is not surprising.

chishaku··on Spotify Optimized the Largest Dataflow Job Ever for Wrapped 2020
Back in my day...

This comment thread is in its own category of low quality discussion.

Negativity bias prevents you from seeing that 95% of the homepage right now is technical/nerdy with a lot of high quality corresponding discussion.

When political/social issues hit the homepage, they often slide off quickly if the corresponding discussion is of low quality (has many downvoted comments).

HN is certainly not perfect but just focusing on the parts you don't like prevents you from seeing the bigger picture.

> But it's noise not disturbing a good signal.

The signal will always be weak early on.

Look at the comments now and it's clear that the upvote/downvote mechanisms are working sufficiently to address your concern.

This should not be surprising. It's typically faster to not read the article and spew superficial off-topic comments than to write on-topic, substantive, and technical comments.

To your point, the FBI memo referenced in the article specifically differentiates the new counterintelligence program focused on civil rights groups from the pre-existing program focused on communist groups.

chishaku··on UC Berkeley Library acquires FBI records of surveillance of Black leaders

Surveillance is a staple topic of HN.

Can you explain how posting this article amounts to someone using "HN... as a platform to push racially charged politics"?
