chdir··on Don't copy paste from a website to a terminal
Should I consider my browser betraying me by selecting stuff that's outside the viewport without a hint / warning ? (absolute positioned element, (-100,-100)). It's simply too convenient to copy/paste from the browser.

P.S. I have a paranoid habit of pasting copied text into the address bar or a notepad to quickly check for unwanted characters. For once, I don't feel like I'm crazy.

chdir··on Why people keep trying to erase the Hollywood sign from Google Maps (2014)
Reminds me of lombard street [1]. It can be pretty tiring for the residents to see a constant barrage of tourists, stopping their vehicles on the street to take pictures. Imagine leaving or returning home at "peak tourist hours", how difficult it would be to drive your car near your home. I guess the burden is on a home owner to figure out what they are walking into when they buy a house near a popular tourist attraction.

Oh, and there's also the Martins Beach case [2].

chdir··on ClearTax (YC S14) helps India file tax returns in ‘less than five minutes’
To broadly summarize Indian tax rules & software:

1) You have a straight forward return (salary, interest, capital gains), the govt. website is good enough to file the tax. Cleartax is a tad bad friendlier.

2) You have a complicated scenario. Cleartax won't be a big help. Reason is that Indian tax laws lack clarity. They are written in a hard to understand lawyer speak that doesn't cover all the possible permutations. A local CA is a good option in this case, but also stop by the temple on your way back. Pray to god that tax tribunal is having a good day when assessing your "out of ordinary" return.

Look at these court precedents : http://www.moneymantra.co.in/detailsPage.php?id=6612&title=B...

They seem like a waste of court time due to inadequate clarity in tax rules. Or maybe they were purposely written like this so that corrupt tax officials can harass citizens.

When the iPhone was launched back in 2007, there were parody videos that showed the "real" potential of iPhone e.g. using it as bathroom scale. Looks like they weren't all that wrong :)

chdir··on Can You Get Smarter?
F5 = refresh (browser)
chdir··on Can You Get Smarter?
> learning to code when he was 63

> switching careers extended his neural plasticity considerably

I find this very interesting & uplifting. Would you be comfortable sharing more on what motivated him to switch careers at that age and your general observations throughout the process. I'm perhaps your age but I've experienced switching careers significantly is like hitting F5 in your life, or like a complete system re-install. Everything feels fresh & new. You feel energized to learn a lot of new concepts. However, it's usually very difficult to convince someone who's 60+ to learn to code. Usually people are intimidated by programming if they've only interacted with a browser for most of their lives.

chdir··on Show HN: CloudScrape – Cloud-based web scraping platform
Websites use captchas & IP based limits to prevent abuse of their resources & make it harder for copycats to mirror their data. There are often cases where copycats outrank original content in search rankings. (see this example : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10103545 ).

If I were a content owner/producer and I see automated scraping from IP addresses owned by Cloudscrape that violate the ToS, I would sadly treat the entire pool of IPs as violators (even though some might be genuine users who are respecting the limits).

I'd like to know what's a legitimate use case of auto-resolving captchas and IP rotation other than circumventing limits imposed by webmaster.

P.S. Why the throwaway ?

chdir··on Show HN: CloudScrape – Cloud-based web scraping platform
- Auto-resolve CAPTCHA’s

- Automatic IP rotation

That's just wrong. Is there a website where we can blacklist IP addresses of such violators ?

chdir··on Show HN: Download any song without knowing its name
Slightly simplified & loops through all the links on the first page :

    from urllib import quote_plus

    ydl_opts = {}

    soup = BeautifulSoup(urlopen('https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=' + quote_plus('linkin')).read())
    links = soup.find_all('a', href=re.compile(r'watch\?v='), class_='yt-uix-tile-link')

    for i, link in enumerate(links):
        print i+1, '-', link.text

    choice = int(raw_input("Select song index : "))

    with youtube_dl.YoutubeDL(ydl_opts) as ydl:

chdir··on IBM is still making ThinkPad keyboards
I use a standing desk, and hence require a separate keyboard to go with my laptop for proper head & wrist position. I've been searching for a wireless thinkpad keyboard which is a replica of the T series keyboard (with touchpad & dedicated mouse buttons). It seems not many people ask for it and hence they don't make it. I've tried logitech & Microsoft's wireless keyboards, they aren't that much fun to use. Posting it here, in case some keyboard enthusiast has a recommendation I could try.

chdir··on Google Nexus 5x and 6P
My biggest gripe with Nexus series has been the camera. None of the releases has made a quantum leap in terms of picture quality. I don't care about gimmickries like HDR, live photos, sphere etc., all I want is a $300 Point & Shoot quality. Something that won't make me feel guilty for using a camera phone for preserving spontaneous memories. Please Google :)

Samsung has done a great job with the S6, the others like G4 & Moto aren't far behind.

I've seen something similar more than once on HN but my google-fu is failing. What other similar services are out there that'll let you smartly scrape a page into a spreadsheet.

In the past, I've tried Google spreadsheets with "ImportXML" option but got frustrated after a bit and resorted to python.

chdir··on We Need the Right to Repair Our Gadgets
The extra only saves the trouble of cleaning the main filter too frequently. The cost of filters, especially the RO membrane (the most expensive component) that removes dissolved impurities would still be there. The advantage of my setup would be to prevent RO membrane from getting clogged too early by sediments.

The additional filter would look something like this [1]. It's an inline sediment filter with a separate casing. For the rest of the unit, you might still be able to buy a complete kit off ebay e.g. [2] & assemble it yourself [3].

chdir··on We Need the Right to Repair Our Gadgets
That's exactly what I did last year :-) A stand alone sediment filter where I turn two valves to reverse the flow of water. It's not very aesthetic and it takes more space but it does make my life easy.

Regarding your 2nd point, most of the cartridges use a "Welded Housing" and carry the "Dow Filmtec" brand. However there are sellers on ebay that supply housing that can be opened and you can fill your own filter material. I'm a little skeptical on taking this route without an understanding or testing ability of what effect it would have on drinking water. I wonder if there's an off-the-shelf complete water test kit or a lab that would do that for me.

chdir··on CloudFlare and Google Cloud Platform
> no longer in use on any critical/important end points

What's your recommendation as an alternative. Cloudflare is tempting if you are tight on resources due to free SSl, CDN, etc. and it is super easy to setup. I'd love to try out alternatives though, just as a backup.

chdir··on We Need the Right to Repair Our Gadgets
A 3rd world country perspective : I've seen an increasing trend of appliances at home that are intentionally designed to make repair difficult. The manufacturer/dealer nexus forces you to depend on paid but poorly trained mechanics that quote ridiculous prices for repairing (essentially using re-furbished parts).

Another case, I've got a water purifier at home that uses a series of filters (sediment, reverse-osmosis, UV radiation, carbon etc.). Due to the quality of water supply, the sediment filter requires manual cleaning every month or two, else everything down the line stands a chance of getting damaged. These filters aren't cheap ($100 every 2 years in a 3rd world country). I find it annoying that the design of these filters is such that it is cumbersome to remove that simple sediment filter. Almost everyone I know ends up paying the service provider for annual maintenance. In reality, a simple design change can make the maintenance super easy.

It's the same story with modern cars, gadgets, washing machines, everything. The money to be made from repair is a whole industry. On the brighter side, the industry is begging to be disrupted.

P.S. I've tried repairing my laptop for broken hinges, displays, heat sink etc. by watching youtube videos & ordering cheap parts from ebay. It's an immensely satisfying feeling when the gadget starts working again. You not only save money & environment, you can justify your engineering degree too :-)

chdir··on Foundations of a good UI
For example: the color red is associated with danger and prohibition as established by social convention. Talking about the environment in red colors will confuse users and distract from the message trying to be communicated

How much weight does this really carry if your product is good ? My guess, negligible. Websites just pick a theme color and go with it e.g. Facebook/twitter : blue, Youtube/Google+/Pinterest : red, etc.

chdir··on A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, nuclear scientist and former president of India, has died
Adieu to a great man, https://twitter.com/APJAbdulKalam

"Dream is not that which you see while sleeping it is something that does not let you sleep." ― A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Wings of Fire: An Autobiography

Some of his books : http://www.amazon.com/A.-P.-J.-Abdul-Kalam/e/B001H9RNS0/

Brief from Wikipedia : He spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India's civilian space program and military missile development efforts. He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.

chdir··on Why Can’t We Fall Asleep?
1. "Mindfulness in Plain English" - Bhante Henepola Gunaratana. Really liked it & easy to follow.

2. "Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life" - Thich Nhat Hanh. Also good, but found it a bit repetitive. Maybe because I'd already gone through the first one.

Edit: My advice is to read the book so that you enjoy it. After a little bit of practice, you'll find that when you want to sleep, just meditate a little bit. The mind will feel lighter and you will automatically drift to sleep. Don't force yourself to shut off your mind, let it happen gradually. Observe yourself when you drift away. In short, cherish the process, don't take it as an exercise.

chdir··on Why Can’t We Fall Asleep?
I had a severe case of not being able to sleep if my mind was busy after dinner time e.g. coding, debugging, mentally solving a problem. Adjusting light temperature, using flux software etc. helped marginally, but never attacked the root of the problem. What really helped was meditation i.e. being able to take my mind away from everything & focus on /dev/null. It is like a magic button. I can fall asleep whenever I consciously wish to divert my attention. Just a single book & a month of practice.

Next challenge : Wake up whenever I feel like. Haven't found the magic button yet. All the fancy alarm clocks, sleep trackers, REM techniques aren't helping.

chdir··on Show HN: Income Tax Calculator
Here, read this example on how the Assessing officer interpreted the section 54F and put a restriction on tax exemptions. The tax payer had to fight it out in high court for a seemingly straight forward issue. The real problem here is lack of clarity in income tax rules.

http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/tax/joint-ownershiphouse-va...

Have you tried to work out capital gains for NRIs ever? It's a quagmire. Try the forums at r2iclubforums.com and you'll see the same question being asked again and again. Why? Because tax rules are designed to be difficult for common man to interpret clearly.

chdir··on Show HN: Income Tax Calculator
Indian tax code is FAR from simple and FAR from being unambiguous. There are seemingly straightforward cases that can easy land you in soup with the tax authorities because it is so difficult to interpret the language. It simply fails to cover all possible cases. That's not to say that US tax code is leaps & bounds better.
