charonn0··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
For me, it's pretty obvious that social media is being used to destabize and weaken Western democracies like the US and Britain.

I don't believe that the lurch to the Right we've seen--Brexit, Trump, etc.--are happening naturally.

charonn0··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Belfort cooperated with the FBI and got 4 years.

Holmes got 11 years.

The Mt. Gox guy was prosecuted in Japan.

The biggest Ponzi scheme in US history was Bernie Madoff's.

charonn0··on FTX's Sam Bankman-Fried Should Serve 40 to 50 Years in Prison, Prosecutors Say
His crimes are closer to those of Bernie Madoff than, say, Jamie Dimon. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years.
charonn0··on US judge halts government effort to monitor crypto mining energy use
As I read it[1], the plaintiffs allege that the government has overstepped its authority by using emergency powers to make new demands for information under threat of prosecution. There is a plausible argument for that position, and so a TRO is appropriate while the questions are resolved.

charonn0··on 46% of Americans didn't read a book in 2023
> 18% of the U.S. population is functionally illiterate

N.B. This stat appears to pertain to English language literacy, not literacy per se. Some of those 18%ers might be reading Dante in the original Italian or Shakespeare in the original Klingon.

charonn0··on What is the difference between a terminal, a shell, a TTY and a console? (2012)
I don't see the problem you do.

SO is a Q&A based knowledge base. Questions are supposed to be somewhat open-ended prompts that inspire experts to write detailed and informative responses. The OP seems to be an excellent example this.

charonn0··on Majority of debtors to US hospitals now people with health insurance
I've been contacted by collection agencies over an ER bill that I paid up front and in full. The system isn't even designed for that possibility.
charonn0··on A TV Show Forced Britain's Devastating Post Office Scandal into the Light
> number = -number

They actually point this out when introducing the code snippet in the report.

And then after the snippet:

>> Whoever wrote this code clearly has no understanding of elementary mathematics of the most basic rules of computer programming.

charonn0··on The Linux backdoor attempt of 2003 (2013)
It's been my impression over the years that = vs. == is one of the most common mistakes made in languages that use them. In which case, can it really be said to be less confusing?
charonn0··on The Linux backdoor attempt of 2003 (2013)
> it said "= 0" rather than "== 0"

Why do so many programming languages have different equals/assigns operators?

There are languages that combine them and apparently don't have any problems. Is it something to do with being strongly vs. weakly typed?

charonn0··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
After reading your link I'm not sure I see the problem you're pointing to.
charonn0··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
I think I have better things to do than parse vague innuendo like that.
charonn0··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
Honestly, this sounds like a conspiracy theory and/or an attempt to deflect criticism from the AI companies.
charonn0··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
If the NYT goes under, why would its replacement fare any better?
charonn0··on Tolkien estate wins court order to destroy fan's 'Lord of the Rings' sequel
> He also ordered Polychron to destroy all electronic and physical copies of the published work, “The Fellowship of the King,” by Sunday.

It sounds to me like the order applies to published copies rather than to his original manuscript.

charonn0··on TXAG Sues Pfizer for Misrepresenting Covid-19 Vaccine Efficacy
I'm assuming that this is just more of Ken Paxton abusing the courts to boost his political profile.

Like that time he sued to overturn other states' elections.

charonn0··on XCurl
This isn't even the first time[1] Microsoft has done something like this with the curl name. And, then as now, people bother Daniel with support requests.

charonn0··on America's shoplifting problem, explained by retail workers and thieves
>After all, why should I pay if others can steal without consequences?

I've had this exact thought while waiting to pay for my purchases and watching people carry armloads of stolen items out the front door.

charonn0··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown is getting harder to dodge
A cucumber is a good, not a service.
charonn0··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown is getting harder to dodge
Receiving a service is consideration.
charonn0··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown is getting harder to dodge
Because you agree to the terms of using their service when you use their service.
