chapium··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
This might be your browser settings because this never happens for me.
chapium··on Tipping at self-checkout has customers crying ‘emotional blackmail’
Simply, its not a bonus and its not for service. Its so the employer can pay less when business is slow.

chapium··on NPR quits Twitter after being labeled as 'state-affiliated media'
That seems like a contradiction.
chapium··on Microsoft “lobotomized” AI-powered Bing Chat, and its fans aren’t happy
I guarantee you, I’m not doing any math in my head. Its at best a rough estimation.
chapium··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
EBikes are a huge win for mobility for people who live in areas that are sprawled and have poor access to transit.
chapium··on Amazon warns employees not to share confidential information with ChatGPT
So its the plant from little shop of horrors?
chapium··on ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web
I’m just searching the comments for novel use cases where its effective. Most articles I’ve read seem like either moral panics or snake oil.

I like how it can generate songs and poems based on a prompt. Its not particularly useful, but it is entertaining. It really does seem curated at times, leading me to think this will eventually become a fad or replaced by a more advanced algorithm.

chapium··on Covid drug drives viral mutations – and now some want to halt its use
How are cookie consent forms like this legal?
chapium··on ChatGPT is a data privacy nightmare
This is a poor argument and is structured in such a way that it too common in discussion boards.

Where to begin.

1. Different people can have conflicting opinions. The internet is not one person.

2. These scenarios are fictional, but stated to make a contradiction.

3. One thing being wrong does not make the other correct.

chapium··on All programming philosophies are about state
Spaghetti architecture. There is so much state organizational controls outside the codebase limit which parts of the code may be executed at any given time.
chapium··on AI Generated Seinfeld banned on Twitch for transphobic jokes
If they allow this, anyone can copy the format to make a platform for their hate.
chapium··on Ask HN: Reject/ghost on all job applications with 8 YoE, what am I doing wrong?
Length of stay seems like a hit or miss metric. A lot of contract work is done in 1-2 year engagements.
chapium··on The Disappearance of the Ashtray
It would be interesting to see massive warnings about sugar related illnesses on packaging.
chapium··on Pomodoro Timer
Does Pomodoro give anyone else a lot of anxiety while they are using it?
chapium··on It's time to put cancer warning labels on alcohol, experts say
The limited amount I’ve smoked shows it has an effect similar to coffee but less jittery.
chapium··on It's time to put cancer warning labels on alcohol, experts say
Getting hit by a drunk driver is a significant bystander effect.
chapium··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you deal with socials, blogging, etc
Online socials starting with BBS were simply a way of life for me growing up. It has followed me into adulthood. I don’t think you are missing out, we just operate differently.

I don’t interact with anyone on linkedin other than recruiters. For ephemeral thoughts I put them on mastodon. I tried twitter for a bit but it didn’t suit me. Reddit exists for random things like bike tag and catching up on local news.

chapium··on Rant: Year of Linux on the desktop
All of the games on my Switch run on linux flawlessly :)
chapium··on Windows 11 update added 'Search' label to taskbar search button – how to remove?
This is all really subjective of course, but I dislike that that start button is small, search is big, and then applications are small again. However, perhaps eliminating the start button is in the future? Move the search button in place of the start button and its quite pleasing, to me at least.
chapium··on Windows 11 update added 'Search' label to taskbar search button – how to remove?
I've come to the point where the only time I will take an OS upgrade is if security updates are stopped (unlikely) or if I'm switching hardware. My theory is that no OS "upgrade" will improve performance. Theoretically it could include optimization, but usually includes bloat because the minimum standard is raised.
chapium··on Why I only use plain black wallpapers
I use dark grey with no icons. Black is quite stark and it's hard to tell if the display is on. It's extremely rare that I even use the desktop for anything other than to have a window covering it up. An update replaced my background with a photo and I didn't even realize it for probably months. It was up so long the photo was out of season and I barely recalled it being changed.

Tools not fashion? Sheesh, get over yourself and gatekeeping what others can enjoy.

chapium··on Ask HN: Do you feel bad when devices aren't utilized to the extreme?
You’d probably be better off using more efficient hardware if the goal is to reduce waste
chapium··on Investigating the effects of bike lanes in Minneapolis
That feeling seems pretty absurd. Cars get dedicated infrastructure and kids are never allowed out on their own for fear of being run over.

Cars are more massive than bikes and scooters and kill almost everyone they hit at a minimum of 40mph. Bikes max out at 20mph with the exception for a racing cyclist. Also by weight they are far smaller.

Car produced noise, micro plastics, and exhaust also have detrimental effects on the environment we live in.

The list goes on an on. Bikes and scooters whizzing by pedestrians is annoying, but probably not the huge danger that is compared to a car.

chapium··on Ask HN: Software career at 38 after being a quant
I’m disappointed in most of the responses here. I tried to go the tech path at 38 as well and everyone hiring shares the same biases about experience in outside industry and age. Its really a clown show once you try to get hired. I’m amazingly unhirable as an SE, but can find good consulting work in a matter of weeks outside of this bubble.
chapium··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
I tend to agree. I've seen things turn bad on my feed pretty quickly, so you have to really take an active role in unfollowing / delisting content you don't want for the algorithm to work.
chapium··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Real name policy just leads to threats. I'd rather the place be toxic than exposing people who want to speak up.
chapium··on 37% of jobs in the United States can be performed entirely at home
I disagree on one point. I've spent much of my career working with remote offices over the phone and with desktop sharing. I have to say, group video conferences really don't cut it. However, one on one calls and video calls work really well and you can get to know your coworkers. Its so much better to have one on ones with others and not have each other worry about posturing in front of their peers. Group video calls are at least just as useless as group meetings.
