chansiky··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
I've never used tiktok, but I do have one question. Does the fact that its in video make it harder for influencers to fake their lives? Or is superficiality still highly prevalent?
chansiky··on Ask HN: What tiny purchases have disproportionately improved your life?
I'm a convert into paper as well, I used to use google calendar, trello, various todo list applications. Paper just seems to win out because of its flexibility.

The best thing is you discover/invent more ways to use it as you use it more. You can't really add new features to an app so easily, but with paper its just a matter of writing it down. You can also break rules everywhere and your paper planner will not crash.

chansiky··on Fish with 'human' teeth caught in North Carolina

  > that eat mainly shells have this set of teeth to tear and crush
I was thinking when I saw the images that there must be some sort of convergent evolution going on. I would love to know what the similarities in our mastication patterns are with these fish. I wonder if our purported history with consuming bone marrow have anything to do with this similarity?
chansiky··on About 90% of Animators Quit Their Jobs Within 3 Years
I forget where I saw it but there was a documentary or a short that showed a series on Netflix using AI to fill in-between frames, allowing animators to draw less frames. Of course it didn't seem to change the workload of the animators, they just improved the quality of each keyframe - so another case of "robots are taking our jobs, but not exactly".
chansiky··on Evictions are about to restart as tenants wait on billions in unspent rental aid
And who, might I ask, will the landlords replace them with?
chansiky··on Myopia: A Modern yet Reversible Disease
If we're going to cherry pick studies, according to one line in this more recent study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26032395/) from the same website:

> "The regression analysis showed that myopia progression significantly decreased with increasing amount of undercorrection (r (2) = 0.02, P = 0.02) in all children"

Just because you have sources doesn't mean its true. Look at how healthy diets have changed in the past years based on scientific studies. If you wanted to be healthy according to 2005 science then by all means eat your low-fat high-carb diet.

chansiky··on Epic Games acquires Sketchfab, a 3D model sharing platform
That's a great portfolio, a very focused and intentional portfolio.

I'll be honest. I'm pretty astonished, solely from the things Unreal has put out recently.

I'm not entirely sure where Artstation fits in though, it seems to be a portfolio website for artists more than a marketplace. It has incredible potential though, if I owned the company I would turn it more into a social network, more chat/communication/group features rather than use it for its assets. I think its only serious competitor is DeviantArt and that website is well, how shall I say it, full of deviants.

chansiky··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
I see. I thought it was just disabled for all users. I can definitely can see how it keeps the rating system intact.
chansiky··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
Meta question: I just noticed, I can't downvote on HN, or at least I don't see the button. What's the social logic behind that?
chansiky··on Under the skin of OnlyFans
We could also just all stop being prudes about nudity. I can't name a single other species that would shame because one of them is naked.
chansiky··on Ketchum, Idaho, Has Plenty of Available Jobs, but Workers Can’t Afford Housing
Another econ issue I'm seeing is that home ownership markets run in a different lane to "place to live" markets. Because homes are closer to investments nowadays than a "place to live", the rental prices don't seem to reflect the appropriate value to the demand of people looking to rent or buy for the sake of living.
chansiky··on The sociopaths are cocksure while those with empathy are full of doubt
Well, I was going to put up a counter argument, but clearly you dont know how to listen.
chansiky··on Alcohol, health, and the ruthless logic of the Asian flush
To be fair, Asian flush is a terrific excuse for sobriety, and I’m glad to have it.
chansiky··on Some Chinese shun grueling careers for ‘low-desire life’
Good for them. They live in a system that seeks to extract their livelihood for national progress and little else. If the state can take away even the hard work of people like jack ma, then why bother. Seems like the winning move to me.
chansiky··on Wise People Have Rules for Themselves
Thanks for the share. There's too many people out there advocating for "living a little" these days. Its good to hear a solid counter argument.
chansiky··on The work-from-home future is destroying bosses' brains
You seem to consider yourself a good middle manager, and I'm sure many people like you exist. There is however a bigger problem in that many managers are not good at the job of being a manager, but they are great at taking credit for the work of others and rising up the ranks of corporations/organizations. Rather they were born with the psychological makeup that directs their actions towards taking credit, as well as other "leadership" roles, but because that specific psychological makeup requires a greedy algorithm, it is actually not very good at orchestration of its subsystems because to be good at orchestrating all the subsystems require being less greedy and understanding each subsystem and their issues well, rather than manipulating, extorting, deceiving, and self promoting (of the work of others as ones work).

I don't want you in your defense of yourself to defend the existence of this coporation/organizational sub-entity because in reality they cost corporations(and governments) an absurdly unjustifiable amount of capital for on average negative result.

Realize that most people if treated like adults know how to work towards a common goal, we are socially adapted creatures by genetic design, and have dominated earth because of it. We actually do not need cult leaders to get to the moon, actually they are more of a hindrance.

chansiky··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
Hey, no problem man, wish you, not necessarily luck, but wisdom into your future. Life is all about these experiences. As long as we're growing, is all that matters. Thank god you're alive.
chansiky··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
Oh that's an awesome description. Love the battery indicators he uses. It makes the concept much easier to understand.
chansiky··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
I don't think its that simple, but I do think 5 days of restless productivity is not ideal for a lot of people. That's enough time to start losing sleep for everyone who isn't serious about getting enough of it. Its also five continuous days of doing the same thing. It works for an assembly line, but it might not be ideal for more creative work.

After trying something similar I think it might be better for people like me to work really hard M-T, take a breather on W, then hit it hard R-F. Thats a very different rhythm than slugging M-T-W-R-F week after week.

chansiky··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
Sounds like your manager is a toxic person, who gaslights underlings, takes credit for their work, blames the worker for something they don't want to be accountable for.

I know a good number of people like these, and sadly they get promoted much quicker than everyone else. Its an archetype that survives and thrives in the corporate setting. The thing about this personality type is that they are incapable to seeing truths that will damage their ego in such a way that reveals themselves to be flawed or incorrect. To clarify, these people live by lies of self-deception - telling the "truth" to how they see the world, but clearly the world they speak from is false.

Best thing to do when you see this is to just leave. You wont get credit for anything good you did, you'll be scapegoated for everything that went wrong, and anything good that happens is because of them. The number one rule when dealing with these personality types is that they they are right even when they are unquestionably wrong, and that is one ship no self respecting person should be on.

chansiky··on Loss of myelin is one of the major factors of age-related brain deterioration
I recently saw a video of Paul Stamets talking about mushrooms and how they increase connections in the brain. I think I remember hearing the term myelination thrown in there somewhere. Granted I don't know enough about him to say that hes a credible source.

But, it would be a good place to start (research). Its a shame that the science community seems to steer clear of certain topics entirely.

chansiky··on Ask HN: Do you wake up with anxiety?
I've noticed that sometimes overconsumption of coffee affects me poorly as well. If it were just about the jitters, I'd be okay with it, but I think you're onto something, in that it might also affect how calm and stable your mind feels.

Strange that you mention task lists, but OP should listen. Offloading thoughts sounds like a good way to decrease anxiety.

chansiky··on Apple watch keyboard developer put off by app store scammers
Considering Apple is all about quality, wouldn't it be in apple's best interest to do proper quality checks on the apps in their ecosystem?
chansiky··on Have we already been visited by aliens?
Those are all lifeforms though. And the "sailing" mechanisms have purpose.

The example you are looking for is a lifeless thin slate of ice/rock that gets pushed by a force such as wind or water.

chansiky··on Bitcoincore.org removes Satoshi's whitepaper from website after threats from CSW
In a world of billions there are bound to be a few truly delusional people.

Given the evidence, I'm convinced he's one of them.

chansiky··on Testosterone levels show steady decrease among young US men
My guess is this, but I would have to say, we need to see the data on women as well if thats the case.
chansiky··on Every thought about giving and taking advice I’ve ever had
After reading some of the comments, a thought occurred to me: A significant amount of advice given is really just a form of condescension.
chansiky··on The Prestige Trap: finance, big tech, and consulting
> it isn't so much a drive for prestige, but just a lack of other goals

Couldn't agree more. "Prestige" and the insecurity of people who seek it is the root of why people run the rat race. It is of course a race because we're pushing all our might in an effort to win.

Now I'm not against competitiveness, but if were talking 40+ hour weeks of 30+ years of grinding for this abstract concept of prestige, then it's pointless, and those people accruing checkboxes on their resume are running like lemmings off a cliff. It doesn't help that the chimp mind is wired to feel the pain of low status in the pecking order. But, living life to avoid that pain, through decades of work is just throwing your life away, the only life one gets to live, 90 mph off the cliff. This is why working too much is one of the biggest regrets of people on their deathbeds.

The people working for prestige, titles, paychecks, and status attainment without a larger idea of accomplishing something either for themselves or for the world really don't do anything, accrue far more security than needed, and waste away their time(decades of it) in insecurity, without actually doing anything, except maybe move forward the company agenda (talk about lack of identity, what was the definition of "cog in the wheel"?). No wonder they regret not living their life at 80. Because they haven't.

chansiky··on Why are so many coders still using Vim and Emacs?
Agreed, the word "still" and quite frankly the rest of the article shows the author hasn't taken the effort to understand why someone likes something they don't like themselves.

This could have been an article written by a windows10 user who asks the question "why are so many people "still" using linux?". New people start to use linux today and quite frankly there's a lot of good reasons to use it over the newest windows. Obviously same can be said about vim.

chansiky··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
Yes, there are a lot of bad actors are in the system, which is why punitive measures need to be enforced. We can't pretend that they aren't being sneaky about their finances. China in particular has been notorious in their two-facedness presenting their economies as safe havens while covering up their underhandedness. If they aren't put on the spot and faced directly for what they are under their mask, they'll continue to shapeshift and avert transparency into a system that disproportionately benefits them. Economists have long predicted their economy is in a bubble, but because of the way they prop it up, they are able to inflate far longer than they would in a more transparent world, thus drawing investors into their falsely good looking economy while acquiring foreign assets that have real value with that extra purchasing power.
