chank··on US home sales see worst year since 1995
It's not a loss if they're still net positive from their unrealized gains. It's basically the home ownershipt version of "I know what I've got" but they in fact don't.
chank··on Amazon's Silent Sacking
> I’ve heard similar tactics being used at other companies–mostly large companies–and it’ll only continue in 2024 as they make decisions that drive short term profits over all else.

When you tie leadership incentives to short-term profits, that's the only type of decision making that will be done.

LM Studio is far superior these days.

chank··on Quality of care declines after private equity takes over hospitals
Is there any well known instance where a private equity firm taking over a business/service resulted in a net positive for customers and not just the firm being a leech?
chank··on Recent data shows AI job losses rising, but the numbers don't tell full story
How and who is effected.
chank··on Justice Dept Says Collusion Suit Against Apartment Owners Should Move Forward
> If a bunch of firms use the same software to set prices but do so independently and without any attempt to coordinate with each other… that’s a pretty decent defense?

The software enabled coordination without rental management companies/owners needing to put in effort to do so. In the end all they cared about was maxamizing profits which in itself isn't illegal no matter how unethical it might be. The key here is proving that they knew what was going on. I'm sure they did all things considered. It's been going on for years.

chank··on I’m not a programmer, and I used AI to build my first bot
> Many would consider tools like DAWs instruments...

People can stretch the definition however they like since there is no hard acceptance of where the line is drawn. Sure the general term musician means a person who plays/creates music. A person who hums can be a musician.

However in my own opinion, I disagree. DAWs are not instruments in themselves. The main functionality of a DAW is in recording, arranging, and mixing audio. They are the digital equivilent of a tape recorder and manual cut/splice process. They have evolved to include many software add-on emulations of instruments and packages around the production process: synths, pianos, mastering tools, additional recording tools, etc. Using a DAW does not make you a musician, but using provided instrumentation in a DAW can make you become a musician.

chank··on I’m not a programmer, and I used AI to build my first bot
Areas of responsibility. The producer is the person ultimately responsible for the output. You can be a producer and not know a lick about good musicianship or play an instrument, but you have good taste and can use tools (samples, software, etc) to take what others have done to make something others will like/use/pay for/etc.
chank··on I’m not a programmer, and I used AI to build my first bot
No, you're an art "producer" in the same fashion of music producers who are not musicians, but still create music.
chank··on The era of America’s subminimum wage for tipped restaurant workers may be ending
Times I've been to low/no tipping countries; service was literally idistinquishable from what I experience in the U.S.
chank··on Phoenix has set another heat record by hitting 110 degrees on 54 days this year
Hence, nobody is doing enough to make them "not" in the news anymore. Meaning making good progress on solving them.
chank··on Phoenix has set another heat record by hitting 110 degrees on 54 days this year
Deteriorating climate and mass shootings are the only two subjects the news covers these days. Both very important issues it seems nobody is doing enough to address. Most people are desensitized to it at this point.
chank··on X officially takes on LinkedIn with its new job posting feature
Recruiters will go where the people looking for jobs are. There might be a certain value for people still using X for whatever reason. I'm not sure what that demographic is because It's definitly not me.
chank··on GPU-Accelerated LLM on an Orange Pi
this concept already exists and is in practice at many companies that require knowledge driven results. https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.11401
chank··on More Americans Are Ending Up Homeless–At a Record Rate
Tier 3 city are "undeveloped/no market" cities. So it could be remote workers moving out of high COL areas. But also a bit of greed sprinkled on top.
chank··on Tech workers remain some of the highest paid in New Zealand
Comp packages inclusive of benefits, but I also think that there is a point of self respect that just because you're doing something you love you shouldn't get taken for a ride at the end of the day. That's why the entire game development industry has such low pay compared to business developer counterparts. Those developers have been taken advantage of excessively.

IMO, jobs where you have some other incentives (moral or otherwise) should still pay market and expect some competition for thier roles because they're highly desirable not just because of some idealistic stance. At the end of the day, ideals aren't going to pay the bills.

chank··on Tech workers remain some of the highest paid in New Zealand
They're still looking for a sucker. That's what they expect to pay someone coming into that role. They likely had the last sucker at that salary and hope to find another. It's possible you can expect to take a hit when going "social impact" roles, but who's willing to take $100k reduction just for that. Either that or they're inflating the title a lot and really just want a Sr. Dev. who again would be taking a salary hit at todays rates.

chank··on Uber, DoorDash Sue NYC to Stop Delivery Drivers from Getting a Minimum Wage
> profitable unit economics.

That may be, but are they equal or more profitable than the Uber, et al model? I'm willing to bet if it were that they would be doing that instead. These companies are in the U.S. where maxing profits/shareholder value vs. taking care of employee needs (or any other need) is generally the name of the game for a major majority of companies.

chank··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
I can agree that "something" is lost. Just not what everyone is saying or thinks it is. I doubt anyone really knows. But agree that full remote is a different way of working and people need to get used to it still.
chank··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
> IMO you lose so much more by sacrificing spontaneous conversation & ideation that results.

Lots of people say this, but I just don't see it. In every office I've worked in in the past 20 years none of this really happened. It was 99.9% distraction. It's trivial to hop on a meeting with close collaborators or even non-close ones to bounce ideas off of. It's a mask argument for FOMO and the desire of those who simply prefer that environment for various non-collaborative reasons.

chank··on Tips for better coding with ChatGPT

Based on my own attempts to have ChatGPT generate code for me, it's better to NOT trust it. It tends to hilucinate even with simple requirements.

chank··on How Postgres Triggers Can Simplify Your Back End Development
I feel like we're coming full circle 30+ years and have to re-learn the perils of db triggers. When to use them and when to not. These days most of the db has been abstracted away from developers using ORMs so it must seem like the discovery of something new when in fact we already know.

Don't write business logic in the datastore.

chank··on Sundar Pichai received $226M compensation, boosted by a triennial stock grant
C-Level comp should take a hit if they have to do layoffs for any reason. These people should definitly reap it when business is good, but not when it's doing poorly regardless of why. C-Level incentives have tunnel vision to few metrics. Screw 10x developers, these people need to be a 100x and be accountable considering the comp packages they get.
chank··on The taxman will eventually come for AI, too
Could work. Unavoidable is the key part. Companies are greedy. They'll want to reduce salaries AND not pay increased taxes due to not having that deduction any longer.
chank··on Meta faces ‘morale crisis’ as top execs work from other countries during layoffs
I'm not sure of the exact qualifications, but some senior business owner typically needs to be included. I believe there is a headcount requirement as well, but no requirements on what that headcount does. Most large companies have zero issues meeting the requirements. For a small business/startup it's likely not worth it.
chank··on The taxman will eventually come for AI, too
I had a fair bit of reflection on this topic recently. While AI shouldn't be taxed itself, there should definitly be heavy and unavoidable increased taxes for companies that deploy/employ it. AI is definitly comming for every job. Not if, when. When is the tricky part, but it will eventually get there. Either that or our economy needs drastic changes in economic incentives.
chank··on Meta faces ‘morale crisis’ as top execs work from other countries during layoffs
A lot of large companies stage senior execs in places to simply say they have business presence for tax purposes. Just look at any company that has a bunch of top execs in Switzerland but don't actually make anything there.
chank··on Laid-off tech workers choose stability over status
Forces of nature aside is a given. However, FB (and other FAANG) rampant overhearing before and through out the pandemic to basically horde talent was poor management.
