champagnepapi··on Show HN: I made a Note-Taking app for people who keep texting themselves
Wow this is pretty cool! I'm gonna give a try. For me, this is actually what most of my slack usage is. Just writing notes to myself and then occasionally messaging others.

champagnepapi··on Role of Algorithms
Any resources to get started with competitive programming? For someone who has years of SWE experience, but 0 with competitive programming.
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: Best books to understand semiconductor business?
I've read this and it gives a pretty good overview of the history as well as current events surrounding the semiconductor industry. I think it gives a good high-level overview so you'll have the foundation to dig deeper. I don't think that this book by itself would be enough to understand the semiconductor business, but it's a great place to start to get acclimated.

Thanks for posting the status page!
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: Is Docker Registry Down?
yeah i wonder what happened?! Certainly a very critical dependency of many companies.
champagnepapi··on TSMC warns AI chip crunch will last another 18 months
I’ve read it, and I agree with you 100%. Open sourcing won’t don’t anything with an ASML machine costs $300,000,000.

Open sourcing software works because some many people already have the hardware (a computer)

champagnepapi··on Making sense of React Server Components
Agreed. IMO, it all started with Hooks. Things really went downhill from there. useEffect is terrible! Example, how easy it to forget the dependency array?! Because of that, you have to setup linting rules to fix the poor API provided by that hook...
champagnepapi··on Jetbrains are offering 65% off Rider personal licenses for 65 hours
I have the JetBrains Toolbox with the “All Products Pack” and it works like a charm! The JetBrains products are far superior to other products I’ve tried. I mostly used Pycharm, Datagrip, CLion, and Goland and love them. Couldn’t imagine dev without them

champagnepapi··on U.S. Bans Sales of Nvidia's H100, A100 GPUs to Middle East
They can do all the R/D they want, however, they can’t produce on a large scale. Meaning, they won’t have a lot of the same capabilities these chips offer at scale.
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: For advice: I'm a mathematician looking for a plan B outside of academia
Maybe you should consider applying for positions at places like D.E. Shaw or 2Sigma. From what I've read they many folks who have advanced degrees in maths and other similar fields. I'm sure you'd be able to put your skills to use at one of those places. Plus, the pay is good too :)
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: Are people in tech inside an AI echo chamber?

champagnepapi··on I worked at Google for -10 days
Agreed, I don't think there would be any benefit to increase the number of rounds. Guessing there would be no extra signal with the marginal rounds, but candidate frustration would be through the roof. I'm already frustrated with 5 ha.
champagnepapi··on I worked at Google for -10 days
>This will make hiring much harder and increase 5 rounds to like 10

Not sure if I agree with this... Is hiring in European countries with stronger labor laws harder? AFAIK the number of rounds is the same. In European countries they have the concept of probation period to protect against an employee who isn't the right fit. We do as well in America, it's just called "at-will employment", so it's pretty much your entire tenure.

champagnepapi··on Tailwind CSS v3.3
Agreed. I was a hater at first, but now I’ll never go back. Took me a couple months to get used to it. However i split my time between both frontend and backend.
champagnepapi··on The developer job market is insane
Wow looks like you dodged a bullet there!

Rust mentioned twice here, maybe there’s something too it

I don’t think it’s possible for me to go down a PHD path.

HFT seems like a cool gig if you can get it

champagnepapi··on Google was beloved as an employer for years. Then it laid off thousands by email

champagnepapi··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
this is terrible. Many people will lose their jobs... due to liquidity issues at their companies :(
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
THIS! I used to get like 5 cavaites a year, costing me between $300-$900 a year with insurance (US). Then i spent like $120 on an electric toothbrush, nothing ever since, and my gums are so much healthier according to my dentist. I learned this at age 29. Wish i used them years earlier!
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
you and i have a pretty similar preference!
champagnepapi··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
