champagnepapi··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
I'm not saying that folks weren't doing that prior to generative AI! I'm saying that the rate at which this is being done is much greater than before.
champagnepapi··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
People these days are saying “don’t look at the code”.

People are shipping all sorts of weird architectures, non-performance code, etc.

I wish that the ram scarcity would drive more performant software however I just think that the way people are shipping software currently will not lead to this

champagnepapi··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
Agreed!
champagnepapi··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
How does everyone feel about the “don’t read the code” stuff that folks are saying? I certainly do not support it but I’m curious to hear what other folks thoughts are
champagnepapi··on How to organize Claude Code for product work
Same! We need a "Stop the Slop" movement or something like that.
champagnepapi··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
No ethics left at OpenAi huh? Lolol
champagnepapi··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Ehhhhh it’s faster at typing code. Writing in a full agentic mode, we’ve only experienced slop.
champagnepapi··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
I think the true cost will be some catastrophic failures.

Just hoping folks don’t get hurt due to people not understanding what they’re doing with these things but believing they’re competent.

champagnepapi··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
I sure hope those docs aren’t written by LLMs for many reasons!
champagnepapi··on Managing AI Coding Costs at Scale
This! I don't think folks understand how easy it is to go from greenfield to brownfield with these tools, esp if your organization is only valuing velocity. Meaning your doing full agentic development on large features, barely reviewing any code, and shipping without much refinement. It's insane, but this appears to be the status quo in SF startups.
champagnepapi··on Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK
> I feel like that was the epitome of AI assisted but quality code

I totally agree with you on this! The engineer is still actively engaging while getting the performance gains of not having to type out functions. The Engineer is still in charge vs agentic "engineering" a model + harness can spit out whatever and the engineer is left to review tons and tons of code

champagnepapi··on AI psychosis is the new leadership blind spot
Don't be a meat proxy! See this all over the place, it's very frustrating and i've advocated for stopping this practice at my company!

champagnepapi··on I’m leaving OpenAI to build telepathy
Agreed.
champagnepapi··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
Personally, In SWE, i think the industry has made a grave mistake with the agents and we're just one big Catastrophe waiting to happen. I do think that there is very real value when software engineers use these tools as something akin to exoskeletons that allow the human to do more, rather than just fully replacing them. However, I'm finding more and more that companies are slop shops and just attempting to automate all of their software engineering. That will certainly end terribly. I hope we are not cannon fodder.
champagnepapi··on Building an Advanced Agentic Harness
agreed. All of these are trying to get to something that can't really every be achieved with LLMs with is determinism. Folks are trying to constrain the models to behave in a certain way with all of these tools, but there's far too many edge cases for them to be reliable. Doesn't mean they can't add some value, but it seems very limited. Hoping it's only a matter of time before we go back to engineering and step back from "vibes".
champagnepapi··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
lol I think you’re setting yourself up for failure. Why? Just because something works doesn’t necessarily know you the boundaries of it. What scale does it work for? Will it crumble under load in prod? It works but allows cross tenant access (security issue) because security checks weren’t in the location you thought… Dangerous!
champagnepapi··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
Brother at my startup one person shipped 75k lines in two weeks. We’re living in the golden age of slop
champagnepapi··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
Cognitive offloading is delegating to the AI and still owning the answer. Cognitive surrender is when the AI’s output quietly becomes your output and there is nothing you feel is left to check. For software engineers the line between the two moves under your feet most days, and most of us are crossing it without noticing.

champagnepapi··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
So you're suggesting that coding will take more of the PRD phase?
champagnepapi··on LLMs reward expertise
this 100%. Skills are gained via effort. Not too much effort that it discourages you, but enough so it's a challenge and engages you. Ofc it helps to have wonderful teachers, coaches, mentors, books, even ai to help guide you, but YOU must put in the effort. You don't get something for nothing.
champagnepapi··on LLMs reward expertise
I wonder the same thing. I think we've already seen some of this happening, however the consequences haven't been large enough to the organization, for example:

We can only hope that engineers working in safety critical systems haven't fallen to these working conditions.

champagnepapi··on LLMs reward expertise
Unfortunately the software industry is saying things like "don't look at the code", "LLMs have made developers 10-100x faster", etc. The only way they can make such claims is by saying what you said above: "Claude, make me Microsoft Flight Simulator, make no mistakes". Additionally engineers are facing pressures via deadlines to work in the paradigm of "Claude, make me Microsoft Flight Simulator, make no mistakes"...
champagnepapi··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
agreed!
champagnepapi··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
At that point I feel like you might as well do the implementation yourself and just plan with an LLM

champagnepapi··on Go LLM SDK for streaming, tool-calling AI backends (plus frontend React lib)
There's a big difference between "written by AI" and a piece of software being designed / architected by a person or a person in-conjunction with AI.
champagnepapi··on Go LLM SDK for streaming, tool-calling AI backends (plus frontend React lib)
I’m curious to know if this was architected/designed by an actual human or is this just AI slop?

These days I am very very cautious about the quality of packages. I’ve become a lot more reluctant/hesitant (which is not to say prior I was in favor of just adding packages left and right). I was still conservative, but these days I’ve become much much more conservative when it comes to adding a package to a production system.

I will review this later and report back for the community

champagnepapi··on A pharmacy chain in Vermont implemented AI for efficiency
When is this madness going to stop? We need to do better as a society.
champagnepapi··on AI is a bad tool
How are you verifying all the code that's generated? Do you think that verifying properly would take you as much effort as the original implementation would've?
