There is a virus that can release neurotoxins and it is flipped in very specific parts of the brain with a MRI-like device. This can elicit a state of “Focus” where the person (victim more like) becomes totally obsessed with a particular idea or subject. They devote all energy towards this subject and can make stunning breakthroughs on difficult topics because they are utterly and completely _obssessed_ with whatever topic they are supposed to be.
They are held captives by their own fascination and work as slaves.
I know this is taking the idea a bit far from the point, but it’s an interesting extension of the idea.
It’s a great way to unblock lots of people to utilize trains that wouldn’t otherwise. 2 or 3 cars of the train are devoted to bikes. That certainly is indicative of the environment and the temperate California weather, but still. Makes for a marvelous multimodal commute for me.

I agree this is an egregious miss, but absolutely understandable from an engineers perspective.
I’m sure no one is happy with this outcome.
Sometimes there wouldn’t even be UI that would load to indicate something was wrong. Logins would just fail with cryptic messages.
The market places immense pressure on incumbent businesses to innovate to cut costs, reduce inconsistency, and provide fresh experiences. These are the basics of capitalism and any individual agent is _required_ to adjust their personal work policy to maintain their position of employability. Employability is always transient. Any personal skill, specific job category, or asset has a limited period of time that it will be useful to the market.
Some obvious examples of this happening:
* Walmart has been piloting robots that can take inventory and clean [1]
* Short distance Autonomous food delivery robots [2] [3]
* Autonomous vehicle delivery of humans and goods [5]
* Haidilao (huge Chinese hotpot chain) has been piloting robots that deliver food to your table [4]

Kudos on some incredible work! :)
My mother then went back to college to earn a degree in nursing. She pushed herself harder than I think a human should need to go to ensure my sisters and I had a stable platform upon which to launch our lives.
I then received an incredible need-based scholarship to university and this was hands down the best thing that has ever happened to me. My mind was expanded farther than I thought possible by the people I met, the culture of embracing and admiring the results of dedication and hard work, and the realization that I have agency to change my circumstances. I realized my life could be more impactful than I ever dared to dream as kid in my small, rural town.
I studied Chinese and CS, and stumbled into opportunity after opportunity that pushed me to grow as a citizen of the world and acquire skills that allow me to take part in it.
I am now working on (what is to me) one of the most interesting problems that humankind is attempting to tackle. I am learning incredible lessons about how intelligent people can make progress in an arena of extremely high uncertainty. I am learning what processes lead to innovation and technological advancement. I am surrounded by people from every corner of the Earth from a diverse array of milieus.
I am incredibly grateful for these opportunities to learn, adapt, and (hopefully) become an agent of change for those that had challenging starts in life. I know there are many others that were just as “deserving” of the chances I received, but for a myriad of reasons were never graced by the blind luck I was.
For these reasons and more, I am thankful.
