ch4ch4··on Recall: Stealing everything you've ever typed or viewed on your own Windows PC
That was an enjoyable movie, aside for the fact that the writers thought fiber optic cables are used for hidden cameras.
ch4ch4··on Brandless has shut down
Maybe it's all just a scheme to funnel Saudi oil money into the US economy.
ch4ch4··on The Science of Wi-Fi on Airplanes
Starlink receivers will use solid-state phased array beamforming antennae, so nothing has to physically "swing" to a new satellite. With a reasonably accurate accelerometer and inertial sensor, it's easy to compensate for aircraft movement.
ch4ch4··on Juul Shipped At Least 1M Contaminated Pods, New Lawsuit Says
Interesting coincidence that this FUD article comes out 3 days before Altria's quarterly earnings report. Time to buy some call options?
ch4ch4··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
The display shim fix worked for me too! But the watch only costs $20 on eBay anyway, so next time I'll probably just buy another one.
ch4ch4··on EU's GPS satellites have been down for four days in mysterious outage
Right, but unlike consumer versions, Windows Server doesn't make it mandatory.
ch4ch4··on Otonomo, with nearly $55M in funding, is cloning our product
However, the Smartcar CEO replied in another thread that they use Readme.io for their docs, which can autogenerate using Swagger, which automatically parses hints in code.

So it is definitely possible that the codebase got stolen and the perps missed changing a few hints, resulting in the Otonomo samples generating identical sample code, as shown.

ch4ch4··on Square Inc. Co-Founder Tristan O’Tierney Dies at 35
So you're replacing one substance with another? How is that better?
ch4ch4··on Instacart and DoorDash’s Tip Policies Are Delivering Outrage
Well, the easiest way is to just not use the service...
ch4ch4··on Boom Supersonic raises $100M, aims for 2019 test flights
Just don't go supersonic until the plane is over the ocean?
ch4ch4··on Net successfully snares space debris
What if you intentionally de-orbit a critical piece of infrastructure?

It could indirectly cause bodily harm, e.g. cause autonomous cars suddenly lose GPS lock and crash into things.

ch4ch4··on Hackers Steal $70M in Bitcoin
Yep, the real challenge now is how to spend it all without getting caught!
ch4ch4··on A Final Farewell
I use both of the BofA and Citi virtual credit card services, as I used to do a lot of QA testing on payments processing systems. They both seem to be using the same backend service.

I even made a crappy WinForm app that would generate a ton of credit card numbers at once: https://github.com/ch4/ss_gen

ch4ch4··on Kano’s next learn-to-code kit is a build-it-yourself laptop
This kit is targeted for younger kids. A soldering iron presents a real risk for injury, and most parents will probably not want to buy something like that for their kids.

If parents wanted to extend this kit to include soldering, they could just as easily buy an additional Pi HAT kit from Adafruit...

ch4ch4··on What Should Happen to People’s Online Identity When They Die?
I don't understand this desire to make the Internet a "Safe Space" which doesn't offend anyone. The Internet is inherently "unsafe". If you can't stomach the thought of someone wishing a happy birthday to a dead dude, why not just let them know that the person is deceased?

As for confidential data, it should be encrypted at rest, so that the decryption key disappears along with the deceased. No estate or court order can decrypt that data.

ch4ch4··on Solar Roof
Sharing power via net metering is better (for the environment) because there's no conversion loss from charging a battery.
ch4ch4··on Solar Roof
In your calculation, $10/kWh is a bit high... the national average is $0.12/kWh
ch4ch4··on Uber's head of communications is leaving the company
Probably mobile users.

That's the only time I ever browse without adblock and, yes, I have actually clicked on a hiring ad, which led to my current job.

ch4ch4··on Bitcoin Miners Signal Revolt Amid Sluggish Blockchain
BTC does actually have a baseline value: the cost of the electricity spent to mine it.

Of course, whether that value is $1 or $1000 depends on the number of people who believe in the currency enough to pay for the power to mine it.

ch4ch4··on NeXT: Steve Jobs’ Dot.com IPO That Never Happened
Please upload this somewhere!
ch4ch4··on Thomas Edison’s Ambitious “To-Do” List from 1888
Wow, thanks for sending me down that hourlong Wikipedia rabbithole ;)
ch4ch4··on Apple Sucks Now, Here’s a ThinkPad Buyer’s Guide
Except that you still don't know which generation of processor the MBP has- I still see tons of deceptive Craigslist ads for MBPs that have a "2.0Ghz" processor, with no indication that it's a model from 2011, which is not at all comparable with a "2.0Ghz" processor from 2015.
ch4ch4··on Republic – Now everyone can invest in startups
Probably due to anti-moneylaundering requirements...
ch4ch4··on Ask HN: Is there any US bank with a sandbox or API?
US Bank just opened up their read-only API for a hackathon this weekend: https://usbinnovationsd.eap.soa.com/#!welcome
ch4ch4··on Hellcat: netcat that takes unfair advantage of traffic shaping systems
Comcast had a feature called "Powerboost" (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/14520) that would let you burst up 100mbit or something for the first 20MB of a file. I'm not sure if this is still being offered, but I bet it would be awesome with Hellcat.
ch4ch4··on Automattic Purchases .blog TLD for $19M
If you really want to stick it to "the man", you should just use the raw IP address for your blog and forgo the domain name! ;)
ch4ch4··on Putting the Tesla HEPA Filter and Bioweapon Defense Mode to the Test
Maybe to pander to the Chinese market? They've been having trouble with cancelled orders in China.

Definitely not a waste of money if it means that they can offload inventory...

ch4ch4··on Netflix Blocks Chrome Incognito Users
I assume that this is to prevent people from making an infinite number of trial accounts and never paying. If you're on Windows, Netflix will use Silverlight to fingerprint your system too. On Android, they will grab the device ID. Not sure what they do on iOS, since I don't use iOS.
ch4ch4··on Juno to soft-launch this month as the anti-Uber service
Ha! I had the same thought as well.
ch4ch4··on Ask HN: Best startup/tech movies?
Ghostbusters.

They identified a niche, bootstrapped their company, solved a real pain point for their customers, and spread through word of mouth from their satisfied customers to become the dominant player in their space.
