Fuck you HN. I considered giving you a second chance, yet you remain a toxic asshat breeding ground which you relish and foster. Fuck you.

cfv··on Snowpack: Build a web application without a bundler
This website's favicon is 7.3kb. What kind of weird edge case are you working for?
cfv··on Apocalyptic Claims About Climate Change Are Wrong
Forbes needs a swift reminder that you cannot breathe money.
cfv··on JSONCrush – Compress JSON into URI Friendly Strings
Idea: just put the thing in localstorage? It's cheaper, less fiddly, you can encrypt it with something like TEA if you so desire, and doesn't make urls unshareable by existing
cfv··on Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival
OK, so I signed up for it.

Minimum salary where I live is about 400usd/mo, and it's asking me for 12usd/mo. I predict not that many people from my country will join any time soon.

cfv··on Gitlab considers not hiring SREs and Support Engineers in China and Russia
> I find it intellectually dishonest to compare the USA’s foreign policy with a dictatorship government

... yeah, about that... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Hemisphere_Institute_f...

cfv··on When XML Beats JSON: UI Layouts
XML also has a LONG history of being used for UI in stuff like QT, which is great.

The one problem I see is that as developers, we shouldn't give a rat's ass about the otuput format's readability when compared to the API ergonomics. If the API for describing the UI is good enough (Can I do stuff like "App.Transition(App.findOne(Sidebar), 500, {width:"1%"}, {width:"30%"}, Ease.EASE_IN_OUT)" or is it a 300loc tutorial?) then the storage format at the end of the day is not THAT important, at least for me, a guy who does a lot of GUI work every day.

cfv··on Spanish government orders GitHub to take down Tsunami Democràtic repository
It's neither impossible nor unlawful though, they just need the rest of the country to agree with them leaving. The fascist dictator who formed modern Spain made it so its constituent lands can expel a part of it but no one part of it can choose to leave.

This is the root of why the procés is illegal, and why they are being charged as violent agitators. They are seen as young kids trying to leave their parent's house and taking their bedrooms and console with them.

If they amended the constitution, changed the rules, THEN left, that would change things. Problem is, that's even harder to do, in a country where the aforementioned military dictator died free, of old age, and he and his legacy are greatly revered by a whole lot of people.

cfv··on Switzerland vs Silicon Valley for Software Developers
A maybe minor point: It's more or less impossible to become a Swiss if you aren't already whereas it's kind of possible to become an American. If your company makes it it's entirely possible this can become a problem down the line, for instance regarding your tax status or rights and obligations.

Also, the culture is remarkably different, so if you're expecting something similar to the american college campus-like experience large companies offer over there you're in for a hell of a culture shock.

cfv··on Facebook, WhatsApp Will Have to Share Messages With U.K.?
> "The U.K. and the U.S. have agreed not to investigate each other’s citizens as part of the deal"

Sweet Jesus this people are insane

cfv··on Update from Chef
Agreed. Can you please do something about the people paraphrasing the 14 words and attempting to sealion the thread? Please.
cfv··on Update from Chef
By the numbers, bathtubs consistently kill more americans than terrorists have in the last several decades.

It's not about the numbers, it's all about not being an absolute disgrace while handling the topic.

cfv··on Update from Chef
So much pearl clutching and "but Obama" in this thread.

You've poisoned discourse to a degree where you no longer can see the plain truth that publicly acting like a hateful ghoul does not ingratiate you with the general public.

The invisible hand of the free market has spoken, and it isn't touching that with a 10-foot pole. Get over it.

cfv··on Gitlab More Than Doubles Valuation to $2.75B Ahead of Planned 2020 IPO
How does this even work? Like, does one plainly submit a form to the govt saying "yeah just double it" or what? I never actually got the hang of how this things are defined; can anyone ELI5?
cfv··on Cosmoteer: A starship design, simulation, and battle game
Anyone managed to make this work for latest Ubuntu? How?
cfv··on The Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat aren't healthier
The author is fairly active on twitter and I understand she replies to questions rather often. Let's ask her? Maybe there's more to her point than what was published.
cfv··on Feature request: Electron native extensions?
While any electron app can have malicious code injected trivially into it, the contributor who closed the ticket seems to think using node native extensions is actually enough.

What do you guys think? How would you go and add anti tampering measures to an Electron app?

cfv··on Tasty Seaweed Reduces Cows’ Methane Emissions by 99%
You'd think beefmonger states would be tripping over each other to finance a larger proper larger study if this made any sense. It completely nullifies the environmental need to nerf their business. Something about it is just fishy.
cfv··on Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic
Two things I loved about Tumblr that were very much not the social aspect (something about the community did just never work for me) were the stupid easy to use publishing tools and simple template language. I may have made some 600 of those site templates over the years and it was FUN. Later design changes tried to push the social thing more to the front (which, again, idgaf about) and so I left. But it'd pretty cool to start seeing SOME of that in wp, which is in this kinda weird middle spot right now where it's not hard to work with but enough of a chore to pay someone to do it for you.
cfv··on US Navy will replace touchscreen with mechanical controls on its destroyers
What even was the point of putting them there in the first place? It's a freaking gunboat.

You want this things to have a single clear mode of operation. You're using this to kill people, not play games. Clarity and intent of use are paramount here, over sweet transitions and looks

cfv··on 8chan goes dark after hardware provider discontinues service
The invisible hand of the market seems to know what shame is. Good.
cfv··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
You're complaining about the unfair closing of a bar because drugs were only sold in the toilets area.

That's not how it works anywhere.

cfv··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
Easy way out literally noone in the US wants or will support:

Get a legal definition of well regulated militia, get it to not map to the national guard or some homebred terrorist group via some ritual like the pledge or whatever, and police the crap out of the gun sales to groups outside this definition.

By the Constitution's own legitimacy it's the government's choice to forego this control under those terms, and it musts be the government's choice to tighten this control up.

Why is it legal for me to own an elephant gun but illegal to strap it to a drone? For this exact reason: Definitions were established, and strapping guns to drones was deemed a dick move.

Same here, define legitimate civillian militias and take all the guns off the hands of every other random guy.

Couple years after that maybe we could start having the discussion of why you need armed death squads on your home turf but hey at least the ease of access for the general public is out, and with it a large part of the reason why the US os the only place where this happens day in and day out.

cfv··on YouTube faces creator backlash
Disney, Sony and their many tentacles randomly steal from youtubers ALL THE TIME, then are expected to review claims of wrongdoing by themselves on good faith, and this is about as "creator friendly" Google will ever get. Those rules suck. It's time to leave for greener pastures.
cfv··on Space Engine
This people made me fill a 5 page long form in order to download a thing that doesn't work on my Linux box.

It would have been awesome if they were a bit more upfront about it before making me fill the form.

Also, the form seems to have been designed to be filled after using the thing, not before download.

Overall, I'm not super thrilled. I guess I'll have to look for a gameplay video to form some opinion on it.

cfv··on Google Search is routinely gamed by private blog networks
One of my first freelancing gigs was for a guy who maintained one of these.

He peddled this pills and had built an impressive (by 2009 standards) network of 87 WP installs with generated crap in them that linked heavily with each other, all on this OVH instance and had managed to break one of the plugins he used for this purpose, so he posted a bid on GetAFreelancer, which I won and never saw a cent for.

I'm still really pissed about that for some reason.

cfv··on US military is a bigger polluter than as many as 140 countries
The problem is we're making the single world we can live in poisonous unstable and dead through short term unsustainable growth, violence and greed.

Maybe we can spare a few murder machines for the Imperial army until we figure out how to stop choking the planet to our collective toxic, entirely preventable deaths?

cfv··on Firefox Personal Data Promise
I for one hope they keep this promise better than the EME one, about which I'm still super salty
cfv··on Cross-Platform GUI Toolkit Trainwreck (2016)
Given you confuse statements of fact with personal attacks, this conversation no longer makes no sense. Bye.
cfv··on Cross-Platform GUI Toolkit Trainwreck (2016)
You miss the point.

And you are missing it because you're OK with jamming your code right inside 400 times more foreign code in order to display a cute window with two panes in it.

Do please make a civil effort to understand there's people who are not ok with it. People like OP, who feels devoting 47 bibles of code to displaying a taskbar widget is not OK.

Or like me, who actually likes to know exactly what is my code doing.

cfv··on Cross-Platform GUI Toolkit Trainwreck (2016)
The King James bible is about 4mb of UTF-8 text.

If your business code is 300k, or about 1/13 of that, then slapping a whopping 30 bibles of bullshit you will definitely not use for a 2 pane thing with a couple buttons and some renderer output on one side is not an insignificant investment.
