cfj··on Leatherman (vagabond)
I think there's at least a 40% chance this was Radagast. His fate after the War of the Ring is unknown after all.
cfj··on How many ants live on Earth? (2022)
Another fun biomass-related fact: spiders eat more annually than the weight of all human adults [0].

cfj··on Help us invent CSS Grid Level 3, a.k.a. "Masonry" layout
Probably influenced by the most popular JavaScript library for achieving this type of layout, Masonry[0]. The author notes at the end of the article:

> But do expect the name of this value to change in the future. And perhaps prepare for a future where we call this “columnar grid” or “Grid Level 3” instead of “Masonry”.

cfj··on How to center a div in CSS
I'm just as lazy as you, but I just wanted to point out that you can create a new stacking context explicitly with

isolation: isolate;

cfj··on Edison Bulb Night Mode
I like this a lot. I had a similar idea for my own site[0], but I leaned a bit more heavily into the actual cord behavior of the thing.

cfj··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
Or Carmack.
cfj··on A runner who leads every pack and then vanishes
Thousands and thousands of miles of practise. Elite pacers can hit 400 m splits with sub-second accuracy by feel alone.
cfj··on Aleksandr Sorokin smashes 24-hour world record with 198.6 mile run
That seems way too high. A rough ballpark of energy expenditure while running is 1000 kcal per hour. Strava has the activity at 16,751 kcal.
cfj··on Those HTML attributes you never use
Seeing the download attribute mentionend felt weirdly nostalgic. I wrote a short blog post about that attribute which shot up to the number one spot here on HN when I submitted it back in 2013[0].

In the nine years since that post, I have not once used it in a real project.

cfj··on €2.6M spent for a book at auction, believed they would own the IP
Are you familiar with Hanlon's razor?
cfj··on Ask HN: How Was the Calculus Discovered?
I can highly recommend the book Infinite Powers by Steven Strogatz to anyone who wants a non-technical introduction to calculus and its history. Great book.
cfj··on Why wild foxes led you to treasure in Skyrim
In Ghost of Tsushima, foxes lead the player to shrines, which grant certain items. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you can befriend dogs by feeding them and they'll lead you to treasure. Not foxes sure, but almost the same thing. I wonder if the developers of these games were inspired by Skyrim's "feature".

cfj··on Bug in Notepad Involving Asterisk in Title Bar
I can reproduce this behavior. Though I noticed that removing a newline with <Delete> does cause the asterisk to appear.
cfj··on Ask HN: What is your morning routine?
04:30 AM: Wake up, realize I don't have to get up for another 75 minutes

05:45 AM: Wake up, get out of bed

05:48 AM: Try to find a pair of running socks without holes in them

05:50 AM: Put on running clothes

06:00 AM: Start my run

07:00 AM: Finish my run

07:10 AM: Shower, shave and all that stuff

07:30 AM: Practise piano

07:55 AM: Leave apartment to catch my train

08:00 AM: Hop on train

cfj··on With greater longevity, the quest to avoid infirmities of aging is more urgent
The second paragraph on that page:

> In humans, the long-term health effects of moderate caloric restriction with sufficient nutrients are unknown.

cfj··on EasyJet bans peanuts on all flights
The idea that some people are extraordinarily sensitive to peanuts, to the degree that they can't be in the same room as someone eating a Snickers bar, is bunk. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology states[0]:

> There is no evidence to support peanut vapor as a cause of reactions or that peanut dust itself circulates and causes reactions.

I am a little surprised to see such uncritical propagation of this myth on HN.

This looks great. Looking forward to the coming parts.
cfj··on Ask HN: Best books you read in 2017?
The trilogy as a whole is simply mind-blowing. This is high up on my list also.
cfj··on Interview with Ed McManus, Technical Advisor for HBO’s Silicon Valley [audio]
I found that funny as hell and it was probably 100% intentional.
cfj··on Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video]
Skyrim (possibly the Skyrim Special Edition remastered version) was also shown in the video.

cfj··on Show HN: AprilApril.js – mess with your visitors on April Fools' Day
These April Fools' things are so cliché, I know. But I'm still learning and this was a fun little project to work on. Comments on the code are greatly appreciated.
