ceedan··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
Fine for personal stuff and exploration.

In a work setting, beware of DIY Syndrome. Move away from an established tool, and now your on the hook for documentation, onboarding and maintenance. When the one dev who cares about that leaves the company, everything will fester. It never ends well.

ceedan··on Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US
"They weren't really pushy during the appointment" (:
ceedan··on Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US
The decline in mortality for so many other types of cancer has caused colon cancer to become the leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US. Eat more fiber.
ceedan··on Valve reveals it’s the architect behind a push to bring Windows games to Arm
There are huge gambling cultures around skins. All kinds of theft and scamming. There is no "only issue". There are tons of issues
ceedan··on Valve reveals it’s the architect behind a push to bring Windows games to Arm
They need to keep wrecking it. Skins should just be fixed cost items.
ceedan··on What happens when even college students can't do math anymore?
It's a publicly traded company that is enslaved to it's investors, growth, profit and quarterly reporting.
ceedan··on Bots are getting good at mimicking engagement
yes, it matters.
ceedan··on The graduate 'jobpocalypse': Where have all the entry-level jobs gone? [video]
Compared to the 90s, I'm sure those years did feel pretty awful, but 2008-2010 were far worse. The global financial crisis caused college graduates to return to school for additional 1-2 year degrees in order to simply defer student loan payments, and avoid the job market. Once they graduated from their masters programs, or additional majors, they were still applying for the same entry level positions.
ceedan··on Getting AI to work in complex codebases
What is the % breakdown of LOC for tests vs application code?
ceedan··on FDA takes action to make a treatment available for autism symptoms
Why do you think that people aren't supportive of him?
ceedan··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
Not sure but they did manage to make the patients say that it had changed their lives. :smirk:

ceedan··on Wholesale prices rose 0.9% in July, more than expected
So you think that the marginal tax brackets from the 50s are unethical?
ceedan··on What kids told us about how to get them off their phones
> But is it possible that part of the reason crime is down is because of Stranger Danger?

Yes. This is a really soft question. Sure, part of the reason that crime is down could possibly be due to stranger danger.

On the flip side, over-parenting has negative consequences on kids who have no freedom. I believe the same poll had said that most kids had never walked down a grocery store aisle by themselves and weren't allowed to play outside in front of their house w/o a parent.

ceedan··on Wholesale prices rose 0.9% in July, more than expected
If only we could find some way to raise taxes for people who make so much money that they wouldn't be impacted by those taxes.....
ceedan··on MacBook Pro Insomnia
I shut mine down every day. It stops battery drain and is a point of friction if I am thinking about "jumping on to work for a sec" at night. If the work is truly not important, I won't want to boot up and get situated.
ceedan··on More honey bees dying, even as antibiotic use halves
Agreed. I mentioned this as a reason why antibiotics are not a solution. Antibiotics do not treat viruses.
ceedan··on More honey bees dying, even as antibiotic use halves
I read something recently that colony collapse disorder was due to viruses transmitted by varroa mites and/or pesticides

ceedan··on Jujutsu for busy devs
The approach didn't drive quality. 1 team cared about their code and felt empowered to improve it, the other didn't.
ceedan··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
I have a 13 mini and a case with a built-in 6800mAh battery. Without the case, this phone is low battery half way through the day. When watching videos, I do feel like 5.4" screen is a little bit small. Overall happy though. I wanted a smaller phone.
ceedan··on Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss
I used to think the same. I would guess that you do not have a big breakfast. Without getting a real meal in for breakfast, hitting a huge calorie surplus is difficult. If you counted your calories and tried to get a 1000 calorie meal for breakfast, hit 3000 calories a day, you’d probably gain 10% in a few weeks. Weight training is good too… you don’t want to just gain fat.

1000 calorie breakfast = bagel with cream cheese, 3 eggs, banana, some berries, protein shake. It’s a whole lot more than a bowl of cereal.

ceedan··on Tattoo ink exposure is associated with lymphoma and skin cancers
> you also might be more prone to showing your ink off and therefore exposing a greater area of skin to the sun.

Seems likely

ceedan··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
I would have expected by now that tipping air traffic control would have been seen as a way to boost wages, and create more interest for the job… but I could see how travelers of different airlines might tip more/less which could influence behavior
ceedan··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
Honestly surprised that airlines don’t have options to tip the air traffic control crew, with how tipping culture is these days
ceedan··on Giving T cells extra batteries supercharges them against cancer
> Regarding messing with T-cells I wonder how evolution came up with the current number of mitochondria per cell.

Cells can increase their number of mitochondria in response to things (mitochondrial biogenesis). I don't know anything about how that works out in the immune system, but have read about it related to fat cells and exercise.

This was also my first thought, and it seems like "giving them extra batteries" accomplishes the same outcome

ceedan··on Giving T cells extra batteries supercharges them against cancer
Their research seems to be in relation to muscle and fat - not the immune system and cancer. I wouldn't expect zone 2 training to improve "T cell exhaustion" where mitochondria are stolen from T-cells by cancer cells.

> Previous studies have shown that cancer cells can use nanotubes like “tiny tentacles” to slurp up mitochondria from immune cells.

ceedan··on A MiniGolf game for Palm OS
Having up and down slopes on the different holes would be an interesting and challenging addition.
ceedan··on Shoe prints lead FBI to suspect couple involved in multiple New Mexico wildfires
Nothing conspiratorial about that, except for your mindset. Smokey the Bear has been informing us about wild fires for 80 years now…
ceedan··on Mushroom hunters can't stop finding mysterious fungi
I’ve been told by a hobbyist "There are many old mushroom hunters, and there are many bold mushroom hunters, but there are not many old and bold mushroom hunters”
ceedan··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
Were a "tactical wee" household which is a reference to the Fruit Bat episode of Bluey.

The Daniel Tiger potty song & book is gaining traction with our youngest, though
