cecida··on Coinbase Announces Listing Date of Its Stock on the Nasdaq
Despite what Crypto Bros say, all they really want is to get filthy rich with real money.
cecida··on 'Fake' Amazon workers defend company on Twitter
Meh, social network mixed up with some sort of cryptocurrency bullshit. Hard pass from me.
cecida··on 'Fake' Amazon workers defend company on Twitter
Imagine being worth 185 billion dollars and still obsessing about your workers advocating for better pay and conditions?

What a miserable existence that must be. Bezos has always struck me as a man who cares about nothing else only his own personal wealth and success.

There is no joy in his life.

cecida··on RIP Google Reader
Ya, I signed up for it a few weeks ago based upon a recommendation here. It's a brilliant RSS reader. Has every feature I want.
cecida··on The Blockchain Is a Dark Forest
If you are a fan of Bitcoin then you don't care about the environment. It's as simple as that.
cecida··on Stripe valuation soars to $95B after latest fundraising
Most of the loop holes have been closed in Ireland over the past few years. I'd look at the Netherlands, Malta or Luxembourg these days if you're looking for shady booking accounting practices.

It helps that the Collisons' are from Ireland, but there's also a highly educated workforce, native English speakers, a pro-business government, world class backbone internet connectivity, favourable timezone, plenty of renewables on the electricity grid.

cecida··on Stripe valuation soars to $95B after latest fundraising
Stripe are an engineering first company. You even see the Collison brothers posting here on a regular basis. Creating great tech is built into the DNA of the company.

Great to see them investing further in their home country as well, and mentioning that some of their global leadership team will be based in Dublin.

cecida··on Woman who received $9,300 electric bill sues wholesale electric provider
It's a microcosm of the hellscape that results when critical infrastructure is broken into tiny parts for profit.
cecida··on Square buys $170M worth of bitcoins
I've reached the consensus that any company investing in Bitcoin doesn't actually care about the future of the planet.
cecida··on Bitfinex, the Italian network behind the boss that makes Bitcoin tremble
Temporarily. For all the talk of crypto replacing central banks and the FIAT system, people heavily involved in crypto want to be able to cash out and buy their Lambo and have fun not being poor. So there will be a rush to use fiat gateways such as Coinbase to liquidize their crypto assets. Enormous sell pressure.
cecida··on Bitfinex, the Italian network behind the boss that makes Bitcoin tremble
I think this gets to the crux of it. Tether/iFinex isn't just a bad player, it's a bad player that has become the plumbing of the crypto space.
cecida··on Mt. Gox demise as told by a Bitcoin insider
This is spaghetti language. What problem does Bitcoin solve? Economic inflation, deflation, hard money, computer science theoreticals.

I'm talking about all proofs btw. So I'd have the same questions about ethereum. This is very flawed computer science.

cecida··on Mt. Gox demise as told by a Bitcoin insider
The problem with trying to suggest that Bitcoin is a fundamentally flawed idea is that you will be down voted to oblivion.

As a computer science concept it's rather mundane. We know what merkle trees are.

It's an extremely wasteful form of computing. Mining is an exercise in wastefulness. Proof-of-work is one of the worst concepts I've ever seen.

Ah, Tether.

cecida··on B8ta closing another San Francisco store after armed robbery
I traveled to SF a number of times with work 2 years ago. I'm not trying to sound like a smug social democratic European, but I couldn't get over the homelessness, the petty vandalism, the rubbish, and the overall air of menace in the place.
cecida··on I Still Use RSS
Visited, signed up, kicked the tires, installed it on my phone, and just upgraded to a supporter account. Has some very useful features.
cecida··on I Still Use RSS
God, Yahoo Pipes is a blast from the past. Yahoo did so many things that were new and interesting, but never seemed to be able to bring them altogether into a cohesive product.
cecida··on A network analysis on cloud gaming: Stadia, GeForce Now and PSNow
I purchased a Nvidia Shield Pro before Christmas (an unbelievably slick piece of tech btw) and signed up for GeForce Now. I'm based in Ireland, as are the local Geforce Now servers (presume it's running on Azure). A surprisingly decent gaming experience - The Witcher 3 looks amazing, and performance is extremely decent with only slight delays.
cecida··on Retiring Tucows Downloads
Downloading Winamp from Tucows so I could listen to illegally downloaded NOFX mp3s. The good old days when the WWW was so new and exciting for me.
cecida··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
Microsoft Office 365 with 1TB of OneDrive storage per person for up to 6 people for €69 a year is almost impossible to compete with.
cecida··on Ethereum Is a Dark Forest
Sounds like an enormously complex Rube Goldberg machine.
cecida··on Learn Vim (the Smart Way): a book to learn the good parts of Vim
I'm not trying to be contrarian here, but why would someone continue to use Vim and Emacs when all of its lovely features have been integrated into products like VCode?

It just reminds me of serious men with beards working on mainframes and AIX power systems when I started my career.

cecida··on Mozilla VPN
I've checked out Nextcloud a few times, but it really needs a sizeable and trustworthy brand that would host it for you, allow you to point a custom domain at it, and provide zero config email/calendering out of the box.

I'd trust Mozilla.
