cczizou··on FreeBSD Renames “Master Boot Record” to “Main Boot Record”
Agreed.
cczizou··on FreeBSD Renames “Master Boot Record” to “Main Boot Record”
Great post. Thanks for sharing this.
cczizou··on Github Is Down
Gitea has worked great for me.
cczizou··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
This story is about a business (Github) deciding to change language in their product that could carry racist connotations. It’s not about criminalizing racist language.
cczizou··on GitHub is working on renaming default branch from “master”
This, I agree with. However, I still see a value in relinquishing problematic language early and often.
cczizou··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
Seriously. All the straw men in all the comments.
cczizou··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
What if we already went down a slippery slope by permitting racist language to permeate culture and making things right requires an equally slippery slope? Could this be the reality we live in now?

I would contend, however, that those who are trying to combat racism and it’s markings in our culture are in more of an uphill climb.

cczizou··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
It’s always nonsense if you don’t give a fuck.
cczizou··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
This is a good point. Language has original meaning and cultural meaning.
cczizou··on GitHub wil change default branch name from 'master' to 'main'
Slippery slopes on slippery slopes.
cczizou··on Ask HN: How do you avoid cherry-picking data?
This is useful. I tend to look for a universal rule I can abide by but reality requires alternative solutions. My hope is to find solutions that benefit collective society while not creating new inequities in the process. I believe conflicting realities need to be held in tension rather than allowing them to cancel each other out.
cczizou··on Ask HN: How do you avoid cherry-picking data?
These are very true and so difficult to adhere to when I’m emotionally connected to an issue. Thank you!
cczizou··on Ask HN: How do you avoid cherry-picking data?
Thanks! This is so easily forgotten.
cczizou··on Isis Casalduc, a Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2002 turned indie hacker
I love stories about people who got into tech along an uncommon path.
cczizou··on Did Japan Just Beat the Virus Without Lockdowns or Mass Testing?
+1
cczizou··on Did Japan Just Beat the Virus Without Lockdowns or Mass Testing?
Does anyone know if they wear masks more in Japan? That might make a difference.
cczizou··on Inbox Zero
Agreed. And the person who coined the term “inbox zero” rolls over in his grave.
cczizou··on Ask HN: Any ideas for children education at home?
This is such a moving target but right now my eldest son is having a great time making explainer videos and posting to YouTube. He’s learning to shoot better footage, edit video, and about his subject matter. My younger kids are playing with LEGO nonstop right now and have been looking for ways to repurpose LEGO kits they’ve put together over the years using hack instructions they find on the web and Snap Circuits.

At those ages, you are still laying so much foundation and cultivating curiosity. Keep it fun, keep it widely integrated: science is history is art is math is science.

cczizou··on Tesla superfandom becomes toxic, negative for electric revolution [op-ed]
Completely agree. There are superfans for everything (Apple, Android, gaming platforms, NASCAR, sports teams). Toxicity like this has to be encouraged to thrive. Elon loves it too much.
cczizou··on Ask HN: How do I create that mental reset effect Monday has on me?
I really know this same Monday feeling. I’m ready for anything on Monday morning but often out of gas by Tuesday afternoon. I’m just now learning to be sensitive to this rhythm.

It doesn’t always work with my schedule or the demands of the job, but most weeks I am able to build in some buffers following long, focused work periods.

Example: Monday, I’ll start early, work long (often into the next morning), break only for meals or the bathroom, and accomplish much across multiple projects. Then, on Tuesday morning, I’ll sip my coffee slowly, exercise, read leisurely, and eventually take care of administrative tasks like processing email or writing up project updates. When Wednesday comes around, I’m ready to work long and deep again.

I work best when I can take advantage of my most energized days and give myself space to recover following those days.

cczizou··on Free America Now (@elonmusk)
I struggle to take Musk seriously. He has too much to gain from getting people working again.

His production operations are notoriously behind schedule and only accelerate by throwing more (literal) bodies at the problem.

cczizou··on Covid-19 – a new regime of surveillance? [audio]
Somehow, the Blockchain has to play into this.
cczizou··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
We need some more competition. Maybe a real-life Pied Piper.
cczizou··on If Sweden succeeds, lockdowns will all have been for nothing
Correct me if I’m wrong, I think North Carolina’s outbreaks began a bit later than Sweden’s?
cczizou··on If Sweden succeeds, lockdowns will all have been for nothing
I agree. Where I live, social groups and families have continued to meet in person without regard to spreading the illness. My state is seeing new case counts flatten but my specific county is still gaining new cases at a higher rate than the rest of the region. It’s hard to not feel a little frustrated with these folks.
cczizou··on If Sweden succeeds, lockdowns will all have been for nothing
Can we really compare conscientious Swedes with bold Brits or brash Americans? I live in a state in the USA where our Governor has instated a full lockdown. Yet, our citizens are out and about intentionally going against guidelines.
