cbo100··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
Same for any queuing system. You need to set the expiry time long enough for the expected task duration.

In SQS, for example, you use a visibility timeout set high enough that you will have time to finish the job and delete the message before SQS hand it off to another reader.

You won’t always finish in time though, so ideally jobs are idempotent.

cbo100··on Rescuers question what3words' use in emergencies
Well yeah, I'm not convinced either, but I also don't deal with panic ridden callers to emergency phone lines. I think I've called emergency 3 times in my many years.

Maybe it helps with an issue they have noticed with certain callers that I'm not aware of.

cbo100··on Rescuers question what3words' use in emergencies
Is it possible the reporters were using a different localisation of w3w, and translated the words before giving them to the rescuers?

Edit: scratch that - it doesn't really lead to this problem does it.

cbo100··on Rescuers question what3words' use in emergencies
None. Any app that can lookup your words can show you the coords.

The only justification is the ease of communication over the phone.

I only don't like that it's proprietary and the company responsible is pretty aggressive about enforcing their rights - there shouldn't be a place for that in public emergency services.

cbo100··on After a week at my mom’s house I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand
Yep this has happened to us too many times to be a coincidence.

Sitting on the couch and mention I noticed some issues while doing gardening and the side fence might need replacing - next minute Facebook is advertising fencing companies to her.

I never googled, she never googled it. Somehow it keeps happening.

cbo100··on What Will Happen to All the Dead Electric Car Batteries?
If there was nobody left to buy used batteries for storage, then there would still be plenty of recyclers looking to buy them.

And the people who bought a 25% worn battery for storage would be looking for another new one at some point, at which time they will sell the old one off for recycling.

cbo100··on All my servers have an 8 GB empty file on disk
> Will you remember the file exists at 2am? What about the other admins on your team?

Hopefully if you were doing something like this it would be part of your standard incident response runsheet/checklist.

cbo100··on Wi-Fi 6 is designed to reduce congestion from devices
If you manage get the signal from the AP to the device, just remember the device has to be able to talk back.

If the device is low powered, this may still be a problem.

A multi AP system allows the higher powered APs to talk to each other, and the lower powered devices to talk to the nearest AP.

cbo100··on Using computer vision to help win $1M in Mountain Dew's Super Bowl contest
That's where I think they are going to use their discretion to "pick" the winner, despite somebody else having been just as correct.

For instance, they say the one he is holding in one scene isn't counted again in a later scene.

What about the reflection in his sunglasses? Is that 1 or 2 (or 3 if you count the source of the reflection wherever that is).

cbo100··on U.S. to require negative Covid-19 tests for international air passengers
You mentioned it was a few days between the initial negative rapid tests and the positive lab test.

Would be interesting to know the result of another rapid test at the same time as the lab one.

Are they just flat out missing some infections, or do they require a much higher viral load to indicate positive?

cbo100··on My kid can’t handle a virtual education, and neither can I
I can only assume they are talking about “school of the air”. Very much not the norm here, it’s very remote students hours from towns taking school remotely.

It was 1 way or 2 way radio back in the day, now wiki says it’s 1 way video stream with 2 way voice.

From wiki... “ Each student typically spends one hour per day receiving group or individual lessons from the teacher, and the rest of the day working through the assigned materials with a parent, older sibling or a hired home-stay tutor.”

cbo100··on Australia fast-tracks plan to send solar power to Singapore
Just pointing out the article had already converted AUD$22B into US$16B. (Not sure if that was updated since you posted)

Still using your other numbers, seems like a bargain, even at US$1.6B/GW

cbo100··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
It's the same on the Apple discussion boards. You won't ever get an official answer, only a guess of an answer from somebody with no more knowledge than yourself.

HP is the same, but occasionally you will get an employee answer, but it will be just as useless.

My assumption is all the big tech companies don't want to give support away for free when you should be paying for a support contract for it.

And yes, there is for some unknown reason, a legion of people who will give this fake support for free for internet points.

cbo100··on Microsoft duplicates data from Firefox without asking
That's no different to how Firefox or Chrome would do it if I had an old version of either installed.

I.e. If Firefox switched to Chromium I would expect the exact same behaviour "New Firefox" and "Old Firefox" is not a distinction.

cbo100··on Entire Google search result pages are now ads
apart from a small blurb from wikipedia on the right, DDG is the same as the google result.
cbo100··on Entire Google search result pages are now ads
Then perhaps try searching "mattress materials", "history of mattresses" or "mattress making tutorial".

Plenty of relevant results, zero ads.

When somebody searches "mattress", 99% of the time, they want to buy one.

cbo100··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
When you create the bucket it shows a url along with the keys.

Not sure how unique that URL is, looking at the structure it could depend what data centre your bucket gets created in.

cbo100··on Show HN: Osapy - an API proxy to visualize HTTP request for debugging
I assume the example numbersapi that is loaded by default.

I got the same thing. Leaves me wondering what to do next. It's not clear, then I figured I'll try this curl command, then an error and still nothing obvious to try next.

cbo100··on Open-plan offices decrease face-to-face collaboration: study
But you need a desk to stand at first.

One company I was at switched to "hot desking" after carefully monitoring the usage rate of desks throughout the building.

Come time to do the switch, and unless you are at the office by 7.30-8.00 it's musical chairs and people end up working in the kitchenettes.

Turns out they did their desk usage survey during the holiday season. So of course there was tons of spare desks at the time.

Also ignoring the fact that developers are going to be in the office every day - they budgeted on everybody being like sales people and out of the office half their time.

cbo100··on Is there any data that says secondhand car seats aren’t safe?
And in an accident a car seat has all the force transferred through just 2-3 points of contact with the seat belt or isofix points.

I would replace my kids seats after any accident with airbags or pretensioners firing.

cbo100··on Backblaze 7.0 – Version History and Beyond
What issues do you have with Restic on windows?

I'm using Restic to B2 on Linux, Win and Mac desktops and a Synology NAS (linux based). No problems.

For my purposes, especially with Restic dedupe, plain B2 works out much cheaper than $6/pc/month would. I currently spend around $7/month total for all these.

cbo100··on Yubico launches its dual USB-C and Lightning two-factor security key
At some point the 2FA protected system should stop accepting guesses entirely for a period - the same way you would lock an account for incorrect password guesses, or at worst rate limit down to a single guess per time period after a certain number of failed guesses.
cbo100··on MSDN Magazine will publish its last issue in November
> even at say a low number of prints.

at some point the smaller the print run the less economical it becomes to print. The litho plates and other press setup costs will become a higher and higher proportion of the cost of each copy.

cbo100··on RBA not fazed by Australian $50 note typo
Except, as you can see from the graphs in parent link there's a lot less of them produced in the first place due to lasting longer.

And then once they are EOL, they are recycled. https://banknotes.rba.gov.au/production-and-distribution/rec...

cbo100··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
Australia has "deductions" and the filing forms are plenty complicated, doesn't stop them making a nice website with a free e-filing system.

For pretty much everything is prefilled, and you just double check from your own records, fill in the various deduction screens for whatever class of deductions you're claiming.

cbo100··on Ask HN: What do you use for authentication and authorization?
Which is fine to use the same logic, as it’s a robust, easy to understand system. but if you aren’t using JWT then you aren’t using JWT.

The parent comment saying “that sounds like JWT” is implying it’s just as bad or has the same shortfalls as using JWT.

cbo100··on Ask HN: What do you use for authentication and authorization?
In what way?

You simply get a bearer token (non JWT) onto the client and use that from local storage instead of a cookie.

Your JavaScript code then makes api calls using the same bearer pathway as other api clients.

The token can still expire, be revoked, etc. it just prevents you having to handle cookie auth on your api.

cbo100··on Why I’m done with Chrome
Nope, clicking "Turn Off" under sync says:

> This will sign you out of your Google accounts.

And sure enough, it signs you out of gmail and the browser. So it's sign in to the browser, or no gmail for you.

cbo100··on Is Sleeping with Your Baby as Dangerous as Doctors Say?
It depends heavily on the child too.

Our first wouldn't settle in cot on her own, to the extent that we co-slept (at least in a cot attached to our bed for ~2 years).

Our second, he wouldn't settle in a co-sleeping siutation at all, and has actually ended up being much better at sleeping in his own cot in the room with his sister.

My hunch is that its the noise, going into your own room with nobody else, complete silence. That's scary. Sharing a room with others and hearing their breathing and moving and such is calming.

cbo100··on Obamacare Calorie Count Rules Ushered In
Dude, I can see what you're saying, but as somebody who apparently does this professionally you need to work on how you get your point across.

I've lost over 15KG/35 pounds since the start of the year doing nothing but CICO - it's not incorrect to say that Calories is the king when it comes to how to lose the weight.

For everything else you are saying, it's not wrong either - anybody who starts CICO pretty quickly discovers that "Yes I can eat anything, but my god I will be hungry at 7pm if I used all my Calories on KFC and Donuts" - but don't keep saying simply that "Counting calories is not going to work".

Edit to add: and my wife and I have done this all with cooking home made meals at least 5-6 nights a week. It only takes a minute to enter a recipe in a calculator app.
