caterama··on How is Groq raising more money?
My company had a really terrible experience trying to use Groq, and I would NOT recommend anyone use their service if you need reliability. So many random errors, so many silly quirks.
caterama··on Ask HN: If I cancel Codex today whats the next best local inference agent?
Zed agent
caterama··on Parallel agents in Zed
I am exactly the same, except I am really excited about this update! It’s not so much “in parallel” but being able to easily jump between threads. It allows me to dive into misc investigations in a side thread without derailing some main context where I’m doing the main editing.
caterama··on Man who videotaped himself BASE jumping in Yosemite arrested, says it was AI
That makes it easy to prove authenticity (has signature), but doesn’t solve the “prove it’s fake” problem.
caterama··on Ask HN: Anyone Using a Mac Studio for Local AI/LLM?
M3 Ultra with 256 GB memory, using GPT-OSS 120b in ollama. It’s decently fast, but makes the system somewhat unstable. Have to reboot frequently otherwise the GPU seems to flake (eg visual artifacts / glitches in other programs).
caterama··on Spherical Snake
This reminds me of Snake Galaxy. I'm so sad it's not available anymore, it was an adorable spherical snake game on early iPhone circa 2010 era. I really miss the little Paris planet.

caterama··on Chernobyl radiation shield has stopped working after Russian drone strikes
Seize Russian assets to fund the repairs. You break it, you buy it.
caterama··on Last Week on My Mac: Losing confidence
My first hand experience with the deterioration of quality in MacOS: I bought a Mac Studio to run some traditional ML neural network type stuff with PyTorch. Unfortunately the GPU / MPS kept crashing (?!) and would require a full reboot of the computer to get working again. Without a reboot, PyTorch would not find a GPU / MPS device and random other apps would glitch. After finding nothing in logs and no information about how to debug anything related to MPS, I contacted Apple Support. Apple support was completely unhelpful and a very frustrating experience. It felt like they were laundering responsibility through the veneer of some engineer having glanced at whatever internal second hand report the support staff transcribed from me. The situation improved a bit after upgrading to Metal 4, but in the end I moved back to Tensorflow. It's very disappointing to spend $6k on a machine and the software doesn't work as expected.
caterama··on Drugs, 500 times stronger than heroin, taking Australian lives?
> “Consuming any illicit drug or substance could be fatal. You don’t know what you’re taking.”

If we legalized, taxed, and regulated drugs this wouldn’t happen.

caterama··on Americans can't afford their cars any more and Wall Street is worried
Disagree. Do you mean that vehicles gets louder because people skip maintenance? Or more stress produces more honking? An opposite effect: more financial stress means less spending on aftermarket exhaust mods means quieter traffic. Also, financial stress means less driving means less noise. Overall, I doubt you're going to find much signal in the noise!

caterama··on Airbnb allowed rampant price gouging following L.A. fires, city attorney alleges
Is this a viable workaround… Charge $XX entry/membership fee for the opportunity to buy ice at the regular price?
caterama··on Prompt engineering playbook for programmers
Can you provide a "so what?" summary?
caterama··on The great displacement is already well underway?
Comments on your resume:

1. First line is "Using Cursor, Claude 3.7, and OpenAI every day". You can't win with this. You don't take weekends off? Red flag. You do take weekends off? Then the first line of your resume is a lie and I wonder what else isn't honest.

2. #1 skill is Vibecoding? Red flag. Your resume would look better without the left column of skills. None of your experience backs up those skills.

3. The experiences listed are all 1-2 years, with the longest one being your self-employed one. Why are they all so short?

caterama··on Scala 3 Migration: Report from the field
Scala used to be my hobby / enthusiast language. Introduced to it through a college course, and used a bit through school. Later, I would use it for Advent of Code, tinkered with a Scala Play webapp, and dream about using it professionally. Rust has almost completely filled that void now. Rust is native, I'm not waiting on the 1.0 release of `scala-native` anymore. The community around Rust seems to be enthusiastic and growing, as opposed to languishing for Scala. I hold some reservations about Rust in terms of how complicated it is. Despite having used it for an amount of time that I would be feeling comfortable in most languages, I am still not comfortable and continually encounter _stuff I don't understand_.

RIP Scala, I will miss you! You showed me the joy of pattern matching, functional OO, currying, how to use `map` `flatMap` `fold`, etc. All things with continued influence! <3

caterama··on Uber drivers in Kenya are ignoring the app and charging their own rates
Most cars come with window smashing equipment included! The headrest and seat belt buckle can both be used to break a window: https://carroar.com/how-to-break-a-car-window/
caterama··on Feds say anti-robocall efforts appear to be working against foreign sources
The damage is already done. Too little, too late. Most people I know have "Silence Unknown Callers" on and will essentially never answer an unknown number again.
caterama··on Do they have humans test cars before they produce them or what?
Having driven lots of different cars myself, I understand the frustration. Cars are inconsistent -- BUT! One thing the author misses is that a person typically drives one or two cars and becomes intimately familiar with their operation. The first time you open a new door handle it can be awkward/unfamiliar/surprising. You might have to look up how to open the trunk, fuel door, or charging port the first time. Perhaps how to turn on the rear window wiper, four wheel drive, cruise control, or fold down the rear seats, and other specialized features. Point is -- normal car drivers figure these things out once and it's not really an issue.

caterama··on US citizens with permanent disabilities get free lifetime pass to National Parks
I used to think the same thing about public transport -- make it completely free! However, after a couple of local experiments in making it completely free, I've changed my mind. It should cost _something small_ in order to 1) prevent abuse but also 2) enforce a psychological valuation of the service.

Wekan is phenomenal, thank you so much! I’ve been using it for almost 5 years now.
caterama··on WeWork’s once robust cash reserves have dwindled, raising chances of default
We use WeWork On Demand for this. No recurring membership fees, just pay as you go. It's okay -- $30 to $50 / day to use the common rooms and amenities. Much better than ... a library / coffee shop / hotel room.

Their guest policy could be better though! You essentially cannot have guests with the On Demand membership -- just go to a coffee shop for that.

caterama··on Why I'm less than infinitely hostile to cryptocurrency
To write with.
caterama··on Vaccinated Americans majority of Covid deaths for first time in August: analysis
I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. Based on the first result [1] searching "percent of americans vaccinated for covid": it's 79%. So flipping perspective: The unvaccinated 21% made up 42% of deaths. It's disappointing that even a hint of this context is missing from the article.

caterama··on Fed warns of low market liquidity in $24T Treasury market in report
I'm at one of these for the following reasons: 1) It's effectively free when you make sure to meet their conditions like minimum balance, have a direct deposit, enable overdraft protection 2) it's a short walk to the local branch, where I can talk to a human, 3) their web site and mobile app are both great.

caterama··on Tell HN: Apple Pay works in non-Safari browsers in iOS 16 Beta 3

caterama··on I just got access to DALL·E 2 and here are my first few results
I would love to see what comes out with certain aspects of the prompts negated.

- "lemon gelato that’s been shaped to look like a heart, on a handmade waffle cone being held up to the camera in a cobblestone courtyard somewhere in italy" ... what about "somewhere not in italy"?

- "Diorama made of clay of a group of computer programmers looking disapprovingly at their CMO who has just given them diet pepsi instead of mountain dew" ... "looking approvingly"?

- "friends gathering around a tabletop “shichirin” grill where an assortment of meats and seafoods are being grilled over glowing binchotan charcoal; everyone is happy." ... "everyone is unhappy"?
