caro_douglos··on Things You're Allowed to Do
In theory the owner should have a better relationship with their bank so they don't deal with that sort of thing.

You can add a signatory to a bank account (and I'm guessing to a credit card as well). I don't know of any services that specialize in nit-picking through the use of an authorized signer however part of said hypothetical service could be to bond / insure that the secondary signer doesn't take some sort of negative action that leaves the account/owner in bad standing.

But again you're running into the ultimate question of why isn't your bank / credit card taking care of you...maybe it's because the bank / CC just make money off of the fiduciary mishaps of the owner when they don't have 20 minutes to wait on hold.

caro_douglos··on When is it okay for a lawyer to lie? (2018)
Lawyers love to send letters. They also can fold when your attorney responds letting them know that the letter’s assertions are incorrect.
caro_douglos··on Expert predicts a major hurricane hitting Houston would be “America’s Chernobyl”
Texas tea is a mainstay of the economy so it’s not terribly surprising that a member of the southern ivies has some groups and alumni decrying oil refinery waste as a big issue. While reading the article try not to judge the people or political structures involved since a huge chunk of the population is tied to the price of oil. It’s a fool’s errand to try to convince everyday people of the dangers involved with an industry which pays their bills.

I'd be curious to see the letters written directly to jeff@amazon by small businesses (3rd party merchants) which were suspended. Would be interesting to see if they:

* went out of business * took predatory loans * were given loans directly by Amazon [1].

I’ve been rewatching a lot of older movies lately given the Rona sitch...one of the scenes came to mind when reading your comment. You can’t fool me!

Ps. Watching this scene feels like almost all the employee stock option situations I OH in the Bay Area. Thankfully Carta is there to show you how little you get as an employee if and only if you go public.

caro_douglos··on Major Linux Problems on the Desktop, 2020 edition
I don’t recommend Linux as a desktop anymore (free99 sold me for a while though).

Still beats windows on older hardware..when it comes to minimal browser boxes Linux is still the best.

Bonds (IMO) are similar to fast food franchise fees. They do a decent job of weeding out the majority of those that cut corners. 25 doesn’t seem all that high....Would be interesting to see what the # of registered vehicles is for each Fortune 500 (would be curious to see if dmv sold that info).
caro_douglos··on A new weapon in arbitration: sheer volume
Are there any firms you can recommend that specialize in fighting TOS?

Is it similar to criminal defense or PI where an attorney seeks out the case and will then take a large fee if they win?

caro_douglos··on Which of these Amazon Prime purchases are real?
My personal favorite was the manufacturer who purchased an item from us (a third party merchant) who claimed it was counterfeit. This product was originally purchased from the manufacturer and had its original sales receipt. Amazon’s project zero uses a hammer to fix this problem by removing all sellers (even ones that have a right to sell the item). Sometimes in rare cases legal action is taken and they do get the real counterfeiter but from what I saw the real problem (for the accuser) is solved because now only amazon or only the manufacturer can sell against that listing. Hoping this will one day change but I’m certainly not going to hold my breath.

caro_douglos··on The Myth of Architect as Chess Master
The term I think is important to mention with your example is “forced mate” wherein the moves force the opponents next move with absolutely no choice except to play the rest of the game down a significant number of points.

The first time I saw grandmaster level play in person was a queen sacrifice which led to bishops mating the king in short order.

Still loving that RH glitch which allowed a sophisticated investor to “utilize” more margins than they were entitled to. [1]

caro_douglos··on Google cuts jobs at cloud-computing group
Vacation is a great thing. Properly setup PTO policies are better. Eventually you reach a point where accrued time ceilings force you to take a vacation. That’s typically too late from a burnout perspective.

IMO unlimited vacation is simply a sugar coated way to not keep track of time off.

Out of curiosity have you kept track of how many days you’ve taken off?

caro_douglos··on Google cuts jobs at cloud-computing group
We shouldn’t give them much credit on this. It’s not really an approach it has to do with regulations for large companies. This “hr strategy” is just a friendly way to tell an employee to leave or figure out what to do. I wonder if the genius behind this also came up with the term “unlimited vacation”.

caro_douglos··on Questions to ask before adopting microservices
For me I’ve never been able to create micro services without running into what you’ve just said about the complexity from the tools themselves. As of right now I’m biased towards writing my sloppy code and seeing what part of it falls over. To me that’s the best way to not rabbit hole while debugging these micro service problems.

caro_douglos··on Trying to sneak in a sketchy .so over the weekend
If you have worked in support this tends to be less fallacy and more reality. The point is that when cutting corners in the purchasing process people often are fed up or too much in a hurry....so things are not documented the way something should be for production. When these process jumpers leave the “tech debt” Piper is paid via your support team/IT burnout.

Are you using a Linux desktop?

Recently I ran into this more and more. Eventually it came down to Linux being in the user-agent causing a large chunk of sites to assume I was using android. This became apparent when gmail asked if I wanted to download the mail application when visiting their site with cookies cleared. Once the agent was changed I no longer get mobile type notifications (on my desktop).

I think this is where things get unfair. As a system we are more comfortable taking advantage of these people’s ignorance than teaching them. As your said even savvy people don’t get this concept because it means understanding the whole system not just when they get their checks.
