cannonedhamster··on How Citizens United Changed Politics and Shaped the Tax Bill
Individual humans can only contribute up to $2700 directly and $5000 to a PAC. Corporations are not tied to these limits if they want to establish their own PAC which is what they do. No one will prosecute PACs that blatantly collude with candidates illegally so campaign contributions to PACs are essentially limitless for corporations but not for people. People have less rights to speech than corporations. The problem is that corporations and lobbying groups are legally allowed to buy influence and more money is more influence so the wealthiest people and businesses will always have more rights under our current system as long as they keep the masses divided.

cannonedhamster··on Shift Your Mindset Before Quitting
Let me just tl;dr this. If you aren't happy with your job, don't just quit and find another job. Evaluate why you're unhappy and see if you can adjust to or change your situation. Otherwise take some time to plan and find a job that's a better fit so you don't just stumble back into the same situation. I think the central point got missed because of the initial reaction people on HN have to marketing in general.
cannonedhamster··on VA’s foray into Internet of Things faced ‘catastrophic failure’
archaic legacy systems = paper and Windows XP.

What they should be doing is testing in a single location first to get the kinks on the system out and define facility needs, then expanding to 10 and then moving to roll outs by region. None of the problems that they have experienced should have made it past 6 months.

I'm starting to think that it's purposefully incompetent people at the top that are causing problems, because without a doubt I could have run this program better but I'm pretty sure I couldn't get the job because I don't have a bachelor's.

cannonedhamster··on Consumers are frustrated by endless streaming services
Yup, no transaction costs to have to deal with, no thoughts about should you go somewhere else. Netflix is all about one thing. Giving the best video experience they can at the cheapest price. Amazon is all about getting you into the ecosystem. Most of the time they don't have anything compelling.
cannonedhamster··on Consumers are frustrated by endless streaming services
Netflix already has the outsized source of the profits. Disney and the like better hope theaters still exist in 10 years or their business model is toast. A home television screen is already better and if Netflix has good enough television and movies, there's no reason Disney needs to exist.
cannonedhamster··on Stuff You Can't Say in Silicon Valley
Truly, thanks for sharing this. I can't imagine how much anxiety and stress the situation created, and I'm quite sure that you had quite a few people that truly enjoyed and respected your leadership. I think your memoir would definitely find an audience. Best of luck to you in your current and future pursuits.
cannonedhamster··on Stuff You Can't Say in Silicon Valley
You're obviously closer to the issue than myself and I'm truly glad you moved on to create something new and different with Brave. I didn't follow the issue entirely closely, but it seems that there were quite a few more than six people in the company that were upset about your monetary contributions. Realistically, you have to know that saying it was just six people that were upset about your monetary contribution is hyperbole.

My comment doesn't just pertain to you nor did I really dig into the merits of your situation, but it does serve as a valid test case that even someone with your obvious and deep technical skills requires more than just those skills to be in alignment with what the company needs from a leader.

cannonedhamster··on The Human Cost of the Ghost Economy
No real change has ever happened in America without blood being spilled.

* Labor unions had state militias called on them and thousands were massacred at the hands of private security agencies during the Mine Wars

* Women had to die in the Triangle massacre before safety became a concern.

* Martin Luther King along with tons of other black people needed to die just to be considered humans.

* Vietnam required the Kent State Massacre.

* How many children and civilians have we had die needlessly at the hands of the police? You can't get a jury to convict them.

The American government has never represented the people. It will take nothing less than large amounts violence to change the country if history is any indicator of the future.

cannonedhamster··on Stuff You Can't Say in Silicon Valley
Yes I must not have made my point. His political views matter only because the company is based upon values such as openness and inclusiveness. As the one running the ship his political views would have been antithetical to the company mission based on his current actions, which is why the employees revolted.
cannonedhamster··on Stuff You Can't Say in Silicon Valley
Political views only matter when your company markets itself on values. Oracle and Google aren't about freedom, Mozilla is, GNU/linux is. When you want to be the rudder for a company based on values your background needs to be unassailable, in other words, boring. You can't be boring when you take an active role in a cause that is directly against your employees.
cannonedhamster··on Stuff You Can't Say in Silicon Valley
You can say all of these things anywhere with minimal actual consequences other than social consequences. You have to be so deep into first world problems that you can't see that social consequences are not the biggest problem for most Americans right now.

* You can support Trump, it doesn't mean other people don't have the right to think you're a moron, bigot, or supporter of fascism for doing so. You go right ahead and think the same thing about them. NO ONE ACTUALLY CARES. Most people are too busy working to get caught up in politics.

* Diversity of thought often comes with diversity of skin color because people with different skin color have a hell of a different experience than white people. They even have different experiences among their different ethnicities. Does it mean white people can't have different thoughts? No, but when you're in a bubble how would you even know?

* The way the H1-B is written now is terrible both to the H1-B holder and American workers. It forces workers to get paid below what they should get paid both as an H1-B worker and as the American worker. H1-B holders should not require sponsoring by a company. If their skills are in such high demand they should have no problem getting a job.

* If they could afford to sell. If they were stupid. Maybe they are optimists? Seems like San Fran has a ton of optimists. Maybe they plan on selling before sea levels rise or trust their government to bail them out.

* If this was all he said, sure, there's room for conversation about how and why we got into this situation, but it was a stupid screed against diversity. This guy is no champion of discourse. I doubt you could do what he did anywhere and have it go over well. You keep your politics out of your work whenever possible and speak your mind at home. A company is not a free speech zone.

* Equality of treatment doesn't mean equality of outcomes. That's a strawman argument.

cannonedhamster··on Alaska is warming so fast, quality-control algorithms are rejecting the data
Let's break this down into a car analogy.

The manufacturer (IPCC) says that based on their best information and models if you do not get your oil changed in your car every 10k miles it will lead to increased engine wear which can lead to other problems. Every reputable mechanic (climate scientists)agrees that 10k is a reasonable estimate and that people who drive over that limit will lead to even worse results on average.

Now lets say you've got a smart uncle Jim. He's a damned good electrician and he's been driving his car over 10k without changing his oil for years and he says his car is still running great. He brings it into the shop and the mechanic says his mileage is down and there's some wear on the engine that they can see. Since your uncle Jim can't see the wear that these mechanics see he accuses them of trying to rip him off and drives the vehicle even farther past the 10k miles just to prove them wrong.

This is the climate change debate in a car analogy. There's tons of variables that can affect how long a car lasts and no good mechanic can tell on what day a car will break, but over a long enough timeline they can say for sure that it will result in degraded performance.

cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: Why don't websites show password requirements at the login screen?
Number 2 and 3 are my most common ones. I've seen bank logins capped at 8 characters. Oh and getting a mortgage... don't even get me started on mortgage company password security.
cannonedhamster··on Trump to start process of sending Americans back to moon: White House
Really this is Pres. Trump just realizing his wall isn't going to work, but deportees definitely won't be able to come back if he deports them to the moon. So this is just a pivot for him.

edit: Too many reallys, really.

cannonedhamster··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
You should mark this day. This is probably the most positive customer experience you're going to ever have with a Comcast employee. I had a choice between Verizon and Comcast. Comcast was cheaper and I still went with Verizon.

Edit: typo.

cannonedhamster··on Recycling Chaos in U.S. As China Bans 'Foreign Waste'
Pulping and paper plants in the Northeast US used to dump all kinds of junk into rivers. You could tell what color paper was being printed by what color the river was. Lots of really toxic things were done by the US on their way to where they are now.
cannonedhamster··on US drugmaker raises price of vitamins by more than 800%
Let me just get this straight because I really want to make sure I understand your point. The act of the government defending the people it represents stifles the creation of new drugs. Am I missing something?

If the above is what you meant to say then what is so bad about these drugs that getting them into the market is detrimental to the population? Drug companies will always make drugs. To say they won't is patently false, most of their research is paid for through the government grant system anyways, the trials on the other hand can be expensive, bu they already conduct their shady trials in poor countries and only bring them to developed countries when they have the best chance to succeed. I'm not really sure what a percentage cap on profits would prevent especially since most of the complaints are against existing drugs becoming more expensive. Few people complain when cutting edge drugs and therapies are expensive, everyone understands progress is expensive. No one understands a well established drug suddenly becoming 800% more expensive for what only seems like profit motive. Greed is not acceptable when it comes to human life for most developed countries.

cannonedhamster··on Police Homicides in the United States
American police officers training depends on the state. It's generally a months long process and quite rigorous physically and mentally. I have a friend who literally just went through this and I can say he definitely had a lot of training. At the end of the day what they are trained to do is come home at the end of the night. Keeping themselves safe is top priority in a job that can put them in a lot of dangerous situations. We've had many discussions about this line between police officer shootings and justification.
cannonedhamster··on Police Homicides in the United States
Perhaps the reason we have such violent cities has something to do with our gun culture. It could be the ease in which we get firearms. It could be skewed due to mass shootings. It would definitely be an interesting point to look into but just saying that we have more violent cities doesn't mean our police should necessarily have a higher rate of officer involved shootings, just a higher overall number.
cannonedhamster··on Among the Tax Bill’s Biggest Losers: High-Income, Blue State Taxpayers
I'm sorry I must not have been clear. My point wasn't that you were saying the homeless had it easy, my point was that the homeless cannot use the system because the benefits of the system belong to those who already have money.
cannonedhamster··on Video Shows Starving Polar Bear on Iceless Land
...sigh...

They corrected a known design flaw in the temperature recorder. This isn't freaking tweaking, it's properly accounting for external variables. The fact that you bring this up shows once again that depth of knowledge and experience in one field does not automatically translate to another field. I'm going to break it down in a way I'm pretty sure you'll understand. Back when the browser wars were going on web pages would have to "tweak" their code so that a page would display properly. Just because someone had to write a bit of code because because of a flaw in the browser didn't mean that the data from the website was a lie.

The thing with the seal level rise? Is this that old Morner chestnut that's been thoroughly debunked numerous times and has been around since the early aughts? The guy was found himself to be falsifying data but every few years someone trots this out as new and it's just not. I mean it's a pretty straightforward well known phenomenon that adding more water to a body of water will make it rise and since we are losing land ice we're adding more water to the ocean. You can easily replicate this by putting an ice cube in a glass of water.

There's mountains of proof of human caused global warming and really it's basic science, but none of that matters because if you choose not to believe the proof there is nothing anyone can say to you to make you believe otherwise. No one can make you stop believing hucksters and conspiracy theorists. You can dissent all you want, but it doesn't make you right.

cannonedhamster··on LED stoplights not emitting enough heat to melt snow covering the lights
Yeah I was going to say, when hasn't this been a problem? But there are a multitude of solutions
cannonedhamster··on Among the Tax Bill’s Biggest Losers: High-Income, Blue State Taxpayers
> If we taxes people based on the benefits they receive from the government, then the homeless would pay a fortune.

This is provably and patently false. Homeless people don't have their good protected by the police, don't get fire protection, don't drive, don't get deductions for businesses, don't get inheritance from their wealthy, millionaire parents, don't get lobbying influence. The entire system is set up to the benefit the rich with a few social stability benefits for the poor, which in turn keep them from uprising and storming the gates of the wealthy.

cannonedhamster··on If net neutrality dies, will innovation and businesses leave the U.S.?
Net Neutrality repeal will have a long tail effect. It will cause the economy to slow as people have less disposable income, it will cause the cost of starting new sites to skyrocket as people choose plans that limit their access. It will make paying municipal bills more expensive. Repealing Net Neutrality is in effect a tax increase on American consumers and businesses, no more no less. The only real question is how far it will move the needle and realistically that depends on how expensive Comcast decides to make it. They have a monopoly and they fully intend to exploit it as far as they can, regardless of the detriment to the internet or consumers. Personally I hope they go full evil right off the bat. Were the American consumer in any way shape or form intelligent or in possession of a spine they wouldn't put up with this, but as it is, we're feeling what it was like when Rome started to decline.

cannonedhamster··on Apple CEO backs China’s ‘open’ Internet vision as censorship reaches new heights
It's not just about "Made In China". I'm not being jingoist, I'm saying for China, they have relatively few top tier companies that can compete outside of China. They do very well inside China because they are insulated against competition, but for the vast majority of products that Chinese export they are only a market shift away from being priced out of being profitable as other regional players could easily take up low end manufacturing and automated factories in other parts of the world could, and probably will take up chip manufacturing. China as a long term strategy is a losing game for any country that isn't China first.

cannonedhamster··on Could the Nuclear Family Be the Reason We’re All Miserable?
It can certainly be difficult regardless of whether or not there is a defined place, but the benefits of a repeated time and place for events, much like sports bars, is what I was getting at. In a sports bar you would still need to support the local team and learn the lingo to impress people, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
cannonedhamster··on Apple CEO backs China’s ‘open’ Internet vision as censorship reaches new heights
Heck if India could fix it's power issues and network peering issues they'd catch up pretty darned quick.
cannonedhamster··on Apple CEO backs China’s ‘open’ Internet vision as censorship reaches new heights
What's changed about China? Have they stopped propping up their own businesses with false profits? Have they stopped stealing IP from other companies? Of the companies you listed only 2 are able to compete outside of China because they actually make a reputable product.
cannonedhamster··on Judge orders Wyoming to return $92k seized by officers
You're not a conservative. You're either a classical liberal or a libertarian. Conservative means preserving the status quo at all costs. The rich in America do not desire equal opportunity, if they did, they wouldn't support anything short of a 100% tax on inheritance (I know that's unreasonable) and an inability to start life in debt. It's not reasonable to think that the rich should give up all their money, nor is it reasonable to think that our current system is in any way fair. Capitalism is highly biased towards those with wealth staying in wealth. It's why even though there are a lot of very well paid coders, there aren't that many people who are making it from coding to the top 10% of the income pool. It's hard for even the best and brightest to break through.
