cannonedhamster··on Americans Now Need at Least $500k a Year to Enter Top 1%
Median income in the US is much lower than 97k. It's around 65k. Median net worth is about 68k. Mean is slightly higher because the top .001 makes so much more than everyone else. It's definitely higher than zero. Not sure where your numbers came from?
cannonedhamster··on Where you place your food in the fridge does matter
Meat in the US is highly processed. It generally receives colorants, shaping, or processing depending upon the meat and where you buy it from. Deli meats for example are shaped loaves of meat for easier cutting and different flavorings. A butcher is generally the best bet for getting actual meat and they typically cut the meat the same day as you get it for maximum freshness.
cannonedhamster··on Where you place your food in the fridge does matter
Use by date, at least in the US, is a completely arbitrary date assigned by the producer as to the date after which peak taste is no longer guaranteed. It has nothing to do with spoilage.

Apples and bananas definitely should not be kept in an enclosed space as the gases will cause faster ripening. When apples are stored professionally they are stored in a nitrogen environment with CO2 scrubbers which can make them last for months. Bananas typically come in plastic bags unripened so that they last longer on store shelves. Tubers can generally last a very long time in a dry cool place, which the fridge is not. It's why people used to have root cellars.
cannonedhamster··on British holidaymakers 'traumatised' after arrest at US border
Being put into a prison without a bed and separating a mother from her child for a wrong turn seems like it's criminal, not civil. Civil would be being asked to show up to court, not being imprisoned.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Me personally I'm not against the idea of copyright but the length of copyright has completely perverted the purpose. I do generally create for the public domain, but when you can lock up parts of culture you're stealing from the public. Once you share something it's no longer just yours. The idea that copyright has gone from 7 years to the perpetual state that it's gone to literally means that there were years where almost nothing has entered the public domain through copyrights expiring. Something from almost 100 years ago will only enter the public domain this year. That's wrong and a perversion of copyright, and has stolen something from the public for years because of retroactively changing the copyright rules.

cannonedhamster··on “Dune” Endures (2013)
Yeah I can see that. It's definitely a personal taste thing. I'm just glad that many people have so many different things to enjoy.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Do you have a link for paperless? I've been looking for years for something like this.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Plex automatically backs up me entire families photos to my RAIDed server with a Backblaze off-site backup that's been tested. It's also useful for audio books, and having access to my media when I travel abroad and things like Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix don't really have much available. I also have a ton of old DVDs saved on there that aren't available anymore to watch online or television.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
There's tons of people who use BitTorrent legally. Some companies use it on their servers to keep them in sync.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Listen here, just because you bought a piece of plastic doesn't mean you own what's on the piece of plastic. It's like a car, just because you bought a car doesn't mean you own the steering wheel it the seats.... Oh wait.../s

US copyright laws have been proliferated around the world. Copyright was originally intended to be a limited-time monopoly which allowed consumers the ability to trust creators and creators the ability to share without worry that their idea would be stolen by other businesses. It was never intended to limit the rights of consumers, it's been warped into that by Disney which rewrote the laws to protect Mickey. Copyright as it is goes against the very purpose of creation preventing any new works from ever being created.
cannonedhamster··on “Dune” Endures (2013)
I might be in the minority but I liked the Dune movie. It introduced the universe, how it worked, had a solid cast. The movie is clearly one from the 80s with it's dedication to atmosphere.
cannonedhamster··on Cameras Could Replace Car Mirrors?
There are numerous studies that show that cars nowadays are dramatically more reliable, both in when and how they fail. There are always going to be maintenance parts but I really can't imagine that cameras are getting loose wires. Besides it's literally two screws and a clip to replace these. They are cheaper to replace than mirrors.
cannonedhamster··on Cameras Could Replace Car Mirrors?
We can barely get people to clean the snow off their cars before driving on highways. Not sure the tech is the real problem with snow rain, and other weather.
cannonedhamster··on Blizzard Employees Staged a Walkout to Protest Banned Pro-Hong Kong Gamer
If you haven't checked out Spiderweb Software games it's worth at least a glance. The graphics aren't really anything but serviceable, but the stories have tons of depth and replayability.
cannonedhamster··on Blizzard Employees Staged a Walkout to Protest Banned Pro-Hong Kong Gamer
Did not realize that PFE was Chinese. Thanks for the heads up. Sorry to see you go STO.
cannonedhamster··on Ex-World of Warcraft developer's thread about China and the gaming industry
I'd say that since roughly 30% of the population has protested that's a large percentage of the population. You're citing statistics from 3 years ago. Most of the country supports either staying their own self governing entity or becoming their own separate country.

These protests are literally about extradition to China. I find your completely biased information suspect.

cannonedhamster··on GE freezes pension benefits for 20k employees
Companies just suckle up to the public teat when they make a bad business decision and it's always the employees that take it in the shorts. The executives get paid big bucks for making decisions but bear no responsibility for the results. It's all upside for them. That's a gamed system in need of being broken.
cannonedhamster··on Reddit, where chaos thrives, tries to clean up to attract ads from big brands
Just because the discussions exist doesn't mean they should. Everyone feels their particular ideology is the one targeted. It's why Fox News can claim to be an underdog despite being the number 1 news station in the US. It's why liberals were shocked when the President won by following a strategy of electoral votes versus popular vote. Everyone is in their own bubble and it's the reason why politics are bad conversation. No one wants to have a conversation and come to an understanding they mostly just want to yell at one another about how the other side is wrong and stupid.
cannonedhamster··on Enterprise Software Is Dead
Short answer no. No business is sustainable without startup money from somewhere. The problem is the wealthy have so much money and there's not enough money at the ground level to buy the new products so without dumping money into crazy new ideas they can't ever grow their money at the top. It's a self limiting factor of capitalism, for the system to function properly money must be evenly distributed amongst those with needs to be fulfilled.
cannonedhamster··on Enterprise Software Is Dead
As my former startup now subsidiary is being forced to abandon working products for inferior ones in the name of "enterprise" or some box checking version of "security" I also agree that this notion of enterprise software going away is a bit silly. They tried to hook some new enterprise ready expenses tool in and force us to use it. It exposed the entire pay structure of the company to anyone who wanted to know. We were back in the old product that worked before the official launch of the new one. We have had numerous people leave because of literally arbitrary policies like buying a meal at an airport is covered but buying a water or snacks is not a covered expense. I.e. your always forced to the most expensive option and in the same breath being told to reduce travel expenses. There now my rant is anecdotal too.
cannonedhamster··on Break before make, abstractions, and sleazy ISPs
No what he's complaining about is that the ad network laden DNS server provided by the company had a longer TTL than what was provided which lead to numerous complaints. I've actually seen this happen before with Google DNS where I've of their servers would randomly choke on our DNS settings because of something obscure we had set. It took us weeks to get things fixed because it was only a very small subset but anyone using a Google DNS would have intermittent problems that whole time. We've also seen local ISPs cache temporary statuses for far, far longer than what the records TTL. This is definitely something that happens.
cannonedhamster··on Disney Bans Netflix Ads as Streaming’s Marketing Wars Intensify
Including cable internet we're paying around $107/mo for 4 services. For cable and internet it would be nearly $300/mo when all the taxes and fees. Not sure it's not a deal to cut cable. We might add sports for another $10 a month.

Try it on Windows. Or in an unsupported device. Or anywhere they don't want you to see it. You own nothing with digital. It's a long term rental. Also try passing it along when you die.
cannonedhamster··on Disney Bans Netflix Ads as Streaming’s Marketing Wars Intensify
There's a few products or there that do just this. Not a lot, but one or two.
cannonedhamster··on Disney Bans Netflix Ads as Streaming’s Marketing Wars Intensify
It only shows ads on programs that aren't theirs which is even now nefarious.
cannonedhamster··on James Flynn's Book Defending Free Speech Has Been Pulled
The comments about fake news how colleges stifle free speech are typical Conservative dog whistles in the United States. This article could be construed as being right leaning however I don't think that's the intent of the author.
cannonedhamster··on James Flynn's Book Defending Free Speech Has Been Pulled
Since when have we had free speech in the west? If anything we're more free than ever ever been. Being anti-Christian would get you barred during the founders time, being pro-communism during the cold war got government attention and black listing, not being patriotic enough got you in trouble in WW2, being pro-union used to put your life at risk.
cannonedhamster··on James Flynn's Book Defending Free Speech Has Been Pulled
What purpose does distributing information on explosives provide other than creating knowledge of how to create explosives something which most people don't have an actual need to know how to do, regardless of how trivially way it is to do. Someone the next town over destroyed an entire condo complex killing himself making improvised explosives.

I agree, myself knowing how simple it is to make IEDs from home devices (I was in the military and defusing IEDs, mines, etc was part of my MOS), that the line between explosives and propellent is tenuously thin if at all present. The issue is the intent of dissemination of the information. What possible reason other than making devices that could put people at risk provide to the public? He was intentionally putting out information to attempt to cause harm to other individuals and the right to life is primary before the right to liberty in the Constitution. A bomb is not a self defense tool like a firearm. It's not useful for controlled demolitions. It's sole purpose is to cause fear and harm to others. That's why it doesn't fall under protected speech.
