callesgg··on Geohot/twitchcore: A RISC-V core, first in Python, then in Verilog, then on FPGA
I think he more or less gave up when he realized he needed a bus width of 38000 bits.
callesgg··on Michelin Puts Puffy Sails on Cargo Ships
It is clearly a bulk carrier as it ha large visible hatches, hatches used to reach the bulk cargo.
callesgg··on Gramps – Free Genealogy Software
It’s fun, it’s like solving a puzzle. You get to play detective.

For me getting in to genealogy was a two week thing, I found all relatives 4-5 generations back. After that I got bored. Sometimes it’s fun when 23andme finds someone that I am related to and I get to figure out in which way.

callesgg··on “YouTube is shutting down dissenting Biology PhDs and MDs”
While ridiculous, Eric Weinstein is a bit over the top with his accusations from time to time. For example Blaming the physics community for not looking in to his personal “unity” theories more.
callesgg··on The Consciousness of Invertebrates
Consciousness being something like having thought processes that model other thought processes.

Finding a hole in a piece of plastic does not require that. Or so it seams to me.

callesgg··on RFC-8905: The 'payto' URI Scheme for Payments (2020)
The bank account nr are not.
callesgg··on RFC-8905: The 'payto' URI Scheme for Payments (2020)
The point of the QR code would be to be able to scan it with a cell phone. The url on a paper would not help with that. But I guess if you have a digital invoice the link would become clickable which is nice.
callesgg··on RFC-8905: The 'payto' URI Scheme for Payments (2020)
I like the idea of putting a QR code on invoices with the payment url.

My current bank has OCR reading of invoices built in to their app but that feels like a bit of a hack.

Which In turn makes my think about if the Swedish postgiro/bankgiro payment system would work with this type of link.

callesgg··on On Smoking
I don’t see the appeal of chain smoking the first cigarette is nice but subsequent cigarettes does nothing for me.

One cigarette a day is about how much I can do and actually cognitively recognize the effects.

That is not to say that some part of me does not want to smoke more than one. Cause there is such a part of me. But I as a verbal entity can not justify it in any way. It just does nothing. In fact it makes me feel worse.

callesgg··on The complete sequence of a human genome
Two guesses. rDNA folds itself so much that it becomes hard to read. Using the ribosomes to read ribosome dna might cause the ribosomes to bind up.
callesgg··on After a week at my mom’s house I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand
Or mabye he used the Wi-Fi and they detected that his phone was loggedin with the same ip. I don’t buy that people are being corrected on physical location. Some services probably do, but the normal ad network’s? Nah. where would they get my actual location data from.
callesgg··on Making the hard problem of consciousness easier
While arguably unfalsifiable.

To me Joshua Bach’s explanation of consciousness covers all the bases.

It is a logical explanation that explains consciousness without the need for magic. Whether or not it covers what you want from a consciousness explanation I can’t tell.

That it is not more accepted seams strange, but it is fairly new and people in philosophy are famously slow when it comes to change. So I guess it makes sense.

callesgg··on Newline Delimited JSON
I know I have used something like this code before, it is basicly what they are talking about.

json_decode(“[“.implode($lines,”,\n”).”]”)

callesgg··on Uber's crazy YOLO app rewrite, from the front seat
A hundred engineers to rebuild the Uber app....

That is insane! To me it seams like something that could be done with 2-3 guys over 6 months with room to spare.

But yeah I get it they have the money and everyone wants to work with their friends.

callesgg··on Wuhan lab staff sought hospital care in November 2019
Media attention != concern

Media attention == media sales

Well... that is how I see it.

callesgg··on A review of correlations between big five personality types and life outcomes
Or free will, if you believe or don’t believe in free will is a tautological consequence of how you define the self.

Some people define the self in such a way that free will can’t exist and others define the self in a way so that free will must exist ie. It could not possibly not exist.

callesgg··on A review of correlations between big five personality types and life outcomes
Hum i did not know that word but i have thought allot about that.

Especially in relation to “neurological disorders” like ADHD. Where some people blame their ADHD for their behavior. Or basically anything that has to do with personality. It is clearly as you say tautological. You have a certain personality because you behave in a certain way, you don’t behave in a certain way cause you have a certain personality.

But then you have the fact that earlier personality can be used to predict future personality and future behavior. It is not causal but it is predictive.

Some people call that causal people in social science. I think that is twisting the definition of “causal”.

callesgg··on Observing my cellphone switch towers

”There are no open source LTE stack to learn from”
That is not true, srsRAN is a opensource LTE project. That has both cell phone and tower versions. Runs on SDR boards like the limeSDR.
callesgg··on List of apps people pay for but have low rating
Pretty much this^

Why should the fact that the conversation is held with a phone change things?

The arguments only holds if you forbid all recording.

Reductio ad absudum.

callesgg··on List of apps people pay for but have low rating
Where do you get that number from?

I once got a call from a person threatening my life. I find it hard to justify not being able to record such a thing because of some strange hypothetical scenario about bad actors recording calls.

To be honest I can’t think of any scenario where recording your own calls would be bad. Can you give me a example?

callesgg··on What's going on here, with this human?
That is a good realization! Damaged/broken people are dangerous to be around.

> But people can make you think the thoughts and feel the feelings that you wouldn't have otherwise. And those new things can improve your understanding of yourself.

True. However those insights can’t be reached from learning about them through a verbal description on the meta level like they are in this article. If I tell you it is good to be happy does that realization make you happy? No. To make you happy I must “manipulate” you (or to use terminology from the article your elephant) into being happy. Just telling you “be happy” does not work.

callesgg··on What's going on here, with this human?
Yet another person trying to teach what can’t be taught through verbal lessons.

Or maybe it can and I have just never been able to find anyone that is able to.

Basically you understand other people with reference to your understanding of yourself, to become better at understanding other people you need to change the way you understand yourself.

Someone else will not be able to change your understanding of yourself. You must do that yourself.

callesgg··on Don’t we all just want to use SQL on the front end?
My dream is:

* Every user in the web interface gets a sql database user.

* A change in the database schema should reflect an instant change in the AP GUI.

A dream that I have worked towards step by step in a few different projects. I am not sure about how it scales to millions of users. But if you have a a few 100 to a thousand users. It should be fine. Main problem i have found is row level security. The app should basically just be a graphical interface that can be configured. Through a config file.

callesgg··on Nvidia Unveils Grace: A High-Performance Arm CPU for Use in Big AI Systems
Super parallell arm chips could that not be a future thing for nvidia or another chip manufacturer. A normal CPU die with thousands of independent Cores.
callesgg··on Larry Page's Comeback (2014)
I think the idea that the project manager of a technical project should be an engineer sounds like a good idea.

In my life I have seen project managers getting played for fools over and over. If the project manager can’t asses if something like a time estimate is reasonable people will take advantage. The cost, the timeline and the deliverables will suffer.

callesgg··on Apple Never Made iMessage for Android to Lock in iOS Users
Well the fact that they could is obvious.

But the fact that people at apple are stating it publicly is somewhat peculiar.

callesgg··on A simple C implementation to stream H.264 to browser using WebRTC
Go read about stun.

You send outgoing packets simultaneously from both sides. Causing both sides to add nat translation entry’s to their nat tables. When the packets arrive both sides already have nat translation entries and the packets go right through the nat.

callesgg··on I love my not-smart TV
Don’t connect it to the internet and your fine. Sure if you are Edward Snowden or some famous person I get it, people are out to get you.

You are not going to change the world, just buy the cheep tv and use it as a dumb tv.

callesgg··on A simple C implementation to stream H.264 to browser using WebRTC
That is partially incorrect, STUN can punch a hole through even when both sides uses NAT in many cases. That is what I would classify as STUN’s main feature.
callesgg··on Scientists create simple synthetic cell
If that is the ultimate purpose and you have a way to slowly progress towards full understanding sure.
