calini··on The Internet 1997–2021
The title made me think it's a type of eulogy to the pre-AI, pre-ChatGPT Internet, but I was pleasantly surprised by pretty colours instead!
calini··on Were multiple return values Go's biggest mistake?
Not at all, if anything multiple return values offers such flexibility that it should be the default.
calini··on Show HN: Live-updating version of the 'What a week, huh?' meme
Can this be encoded as a JPEG for easily saving it on mobile?
calini··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
Time to finally buy a Kindle I guess
calini··on I still like Sublime Text
Hi! I was a Sublime Text fan throughout University, and I would have loved to continue using it. Unfortunately for me Sublime lacks too many necessities, and that forced me off Sublime and onto the much slower VSCode.

I really wish Sublime would develop a more solid plugin system and have some sane built-ins such as a terminal.

calini··on Belshazzar's Clock
Really reminds me of this fake CRT monitor made with a moving laser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qPc_I1V6go
calini··on All clocks are 30 seconds late
I'm sorry, you are crazy.
calini··on Advent of Code 2024
I have seen a couple of snarky comments about how AoC is just a competition for who can write an input parser the fastest for 25 days in a row, I'll just share the following:

Just write that once, put it in a template /day0 folder that has /day0/part1, /day0/part2, and /day0/input.txt, and then just copy it and focus on the actual problem. It's all about having fun!

calini··on Taylor Swift fans are leaving X for Bluesky after Trump's election
Sure they are, like the 10 times they were before this.
calini··on Jaywalking legalized in New York City
Eyyy, I’m walkin’ ‘ere
calini··on Ask HN: In 2024 what's the best way to manage contacts?
I just rely on Apple's iCloud contacts, you can add people into groups if you just want to see subsets of them, and it's enough. Sometimes simple is good.
calini··on UK considering making USB-C the common charging standard, following the EU
The irrelevancy of this just reflects the sad state of affairs in the UK after Brexit.
calini··on Nintendo Kills Ryujinx After Yuzu
Just saw some screenshots of a Discord conversation where a supposed friend/collaborator of the maintainer denied it, instead confirming it was a cease and desist.

Take both this and the top comment with many grains of salt.

calini··on Why Gauss wanted a heptadecagon on his tombstone
Are we sure it wasn't just a low poly cirlce? :)
calini··on An NFC movie library for my kids
I love this, the tactility of it is super good, and a good break from a world where everything is touchscreens!
calini··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
So happy I got a 15 Pro, I couldn't care less about that button.
calini··on Apple Hearing Study shares preliminary insights on tinnitus
Got mild tinnitus in 2016 after an ear infection, and for about 1 year I was really bummed out about it. Then I guess I learnt to ignore it and sort of "forgot" about it. Now if I am reminded about it (thank you :) ), I can 'concentrate' on it and realise it's still there in some capacity, but otherwise I go on about my day no problem and don't think about it.
calini··on We built the city of Colombo in Cities:Skylines
Now I want to do this for my hometown.
calini··on Paper straws are often touted as alternative to plastic, but they're toxic
I'll print a QR code of this on a T-shirt and wear it at every establishment ever that serves you paper straws. They're terrible.
calini··on How French Drains Work
My potentially dyslexic brain read this as “How the French drain in work” and pondered for a second: Hmm, I thought the French had great work-life balance and early retirement and all of that, what happened?
calini··on Elon Musk posts deepfake of Kamala Harris that violates X policy
Rhetoric is extreme indeed nowadays, but it's always one side saying extreme things about the other side. It's clearly fake just based on the 'extreme self deprecating' direction of it. I don't think it muddies the waters anymore than other political sketches / comics / comedy moments / SNL / whatever you want.
calini··on How I Computer in 2024
I had a 27" 1440p panel before this, and 49" was a natural evolution as it's two 27" 1440p panels side by side.

The curvature is indeed a bit much in the beginning, and I would like to try something like the Xeneon flex next, where I get to choose the curvature.

calini··on Russ Cox is stepping down as the Go tech lead
Thank you for making my career more enjoyable and productive, rsc! Go is a lovely ecosystem and I'm looking forward to see where it will Go :).
calini··on How I Computer in 2024
I have the 49" Odyssey G9 and I think it's on the upper extreme of how big I'd want a monitor to be. Do you ever think it's too big?
calini··on macOS in QEMU in Docker
This is SO useful for cross-compilation, and delivering macOS binaries!
calini··on Elon Musk posts deepfake of Kamala Harris that violates X policy
Has he done that?
calini··on Elon Musk posts deepfake of Kamala Harris that violates X policy
The tools are out there, they should do it.
calini··on Stable Fast 3D: Rapid 3D Asset Generation from Single Images
I'm going to 3D print so much dumb stuff with this.
calini··on Elon Musk posts deepfake of Kamala Harris that violates X policy
> X says that satire doesn’t violate the policy as long as it doesn’t “cause significant confusion about the authenticity of the media.”

If you can't figure out that that deepfake video is satire, something's wrong with you

calini··on Re: Do people IRL know you have a blog?
I have a 3D printed shopping trolley coin with my blog written on it, and even offered a couple of them to friends. That being said the blog's been inactive for a couple of years now :D.
